XAVIER

I left Valerie in bed, still tangled in the sheets and pink with warmth.

We had stayed up until nearly sunrise, feeling one another beneath the sheets—again and again and again. We hadn’t meant to stay up all night, but by the time we shut our eyes to sleep, the sun was creeping up over the forest’s edge.

Now she slept with a small smile on her face, wrapped in the finest silks I could get my hands on. I had never seen her so comfortable as I had in the passing months

She slept like a stone, my little Luna.

This was the life she’d deserved from the very beginning. The one I had wanted to give her so long ago.

I lifted her hand from the blanket—the one still donning the ring I’d given her—and kissed her knuckles. She didn’t wake—though a part of me was almost hoping she would.

Now that our troubles had passed, the most agonizing moments of my life were the ones that took place when we weren’t together.

Still, I was happy to have given her this. A restful night’s sleep in a place

VALERIEThe mating ceremony had lasted an entire week. Seven days, in fact. Seven days of endlessly smiling at guests. Seven days of flowing wine and loud music, and the word “Luna” passing over my ears day in and day out.I barely slept that week. Barely breathed. I had smiled so much that my cheeks ached for days afterward—and I retained a painful kink in my neck from all the nodding along I did to political discussions that made my head spin.Thankfully, Xavier had chosen to move our honeymoon to Salmere. And the moment I stepped out of the car, I could breathe again. The castle was just as I remembered it—large stone walls and arched windows, and the beautiful rose garden out front. It was the first place I’d ever felt home at—and that feeling hadn’t left, even after all my time away.I admired the icy-choked balconies and mossy exterior as way made our way slowly up the endless staircase. Xavier helped me cook a hearty meal in the kitchen, before making good on our marital statu

SEBASTIANAdrian stood in the doorway, his arms crossed. He watched me like a hawk as I folded the last of my belongings into a travel trunk.I could tell he wasn’t pleased about my departure. Without me around, the colony fell into his hands. And he wasn’t particularly good at handling responsibility.“You don’t trust me to run Qiovadore, do you?” he said with a frown. “I think I’ll do quite well.”I turned to look at him over my shoulder, raising a brow. “Just do things properly, will you?”Adrian scowled, kicking his heel against the door frame. “You should have more faith in me. It’s like you don’t trust me with anything.”“I trust you,” I said, not looking up. “Just not your patience, your discipline, or your decision-making.”“So everything that matters then.”I closed the trunk and turned to him. “You’ll manage. Check in with Miriam twice a week, especially with the new breeders coming in. If any of them show signs of incompatibility, send me a full report.”Adrian rolled his e

LUCASI clutched my goblet of wine as I weaved through crowds of guests. False smiles and pointed stares filled the space around me. The scent of fizzy wine filled the air and flute music played a harmonious tune through the courtyard.A stunning display had been erected. A large, beautiful dais, covered with latticed arches and enough roses to fill a garden. Candle lights flickered through the dark of the evening, the skies clear and clustered with stars above.Like the damn heavens had opened up just for the two of them.I had taken claim of the refreshments table. I had a mission to drink more than my weight in wine. Enough that I could forget I was at the mating ceremony of the girl I loved. But the wine was far too sweet for my liking, and I’d been nursing the same cup for the last hour. Now I was searching through the crowd for her. As bitter as I was, Valerie deserved my congratulations. Love was a strange thing. It could somehow make a man the most selfish being on the planet—

A Month Later...VALERIEI woke, tangled against warm skin and knotted sheets. My cheek pressed against the solid heat of Xavier’s chest. His arm wrapped lazily around my waist, his breath ruffling my hair.A month had passed since the North Archipelagos—since Calista and the fire that burned her body to ash.I wasn’t sure how we made it out in time. Lucas’s hellfire was an elemental wrath I’d never seen the likes of. It consumed everything, eating away at crates and cloth and even ice. It seemed like nothing would stop it.Like the fire would feed and feed until it grew bored, and eventually sizzled out, leaving nothing but cinders behind.I don’t recall out escape. The last thing I remember was Lucas’s fire, eating away at the frozen binds on Xavier’s legs. Then, he and Sebastian broke free. Smoke filled the room after that.I felt myself lifted up in someone’s arms—then, everything went dark.Xavier sent a group of wolves back later to investigate. Everything had been burned to ash

VALERIEI didn’t want to move, but my body obeyed anyway. My hand closed around the knife. The hilt was icy and heavy in my hand. Diya snarled wildly inside of me.Resist, human. Resist the call. Remember who you are and where you come from. But even with Diya’s voice screaming inside of my mind, I couldn’t force my feet to stop.I stepped toward the catafalque, each footstep echoing through the chambers. The circle of cloaked figures made space for me, watchful eyes examining every step I took.Until I stood in front of her.Calista. She looked so peaceful as she lay there beneath the ice. Her gentle eyes stared up at me, unmoving.I raised the knife and held it against my chest. My heart was beating so quickly, I couldn’t feel it anymore. Only the throbbing burning at my neck where the mark was—the same mark Amara had touched to bring forth my visions of the past.It pulsed with heat like it wanted to consume me from the inside out.“Valerie!”Lucas’s voice echoed through the fog
