Chapter 1

Author: Nameless
My stomach burned like fire from all the pool chemicals I had swallowed. My sister, Rebecca Johnson, helped me out of the water.

I collapsed at the edge of the pool, coughing up water. I was barely conscious.

My adopted brother, Isaac Johnson, turned deathly pale. His friends panicked right along with him, all blurting out excuses at once.

"We were just messing around!"

"Yeah! Who knew he'd jump in himself?"

"Who stays totally still while drowning anyway? Is he trying to frame us?"

I was shivering so hard that my teeth were chattering. I wrapped myself in the sweater Rebecca offered me.

Even then, I managed to force a smile at my adopted brother. "Isaac, you told me to jump into the pool, so I did. I always listen to you."

Isaac shuddered under my gaze and took a few steps back, looking at me like I was some kind of monster.

"What crazy nonsense are you talking about?" he yelled. "When did I ever tell you to do that?"

Desperate and nearly in tears, he turned to our parents as they rushed over. "Mom, Dad, don't listen to Carl! He's crazy! He's doing this on purpose to frame me!"

Our parents frowned as they looked me over, their faces darkening when they saw me soaked from head to toe.

One of Isaac's rich friends stepped up and tried to back him up. "Carl really jumped in on his own! We tried to save him, but he wouldn't even come up!"

I peeked out from behind Rebecca, looking completely innocent. "I wasn't refusing to come up. It's just that I have to do whatever Isaac tells me to do. Otherwise, he'll be upset. If he's upset, the three of you will be upset too."

I looked at them and asked seriously, "So what do I have to do to make you all happy?"

Everyone fell silent and stared at me as if I were insane.

Rebecca froze. She grabbed my arm, her long nails digging deep into my skin. "Carl Johnson, shut up!"

Dad barked at the butler, "Take Carl to his room and get a doctor to check him over!" Then he turned to Isaac, his expression unusually stern. "Isaac, you come with me."

Isaac had always been the family's favorite. No one had ever been harsh with him. Rattled by Dad's tone, he broke down sobbing. "Dad, it really wasn't me…"

Rebecca rushed over and grabbed me, checking me from head to toe."Are you okay? Did you get hurt?" she asked worriedly.I shook my head. "What could possibly happen to me? They're the ones who got hurt."The officer in charge finally snapped out of it. He walked over and said with a look of genuine admiration, "You're something, kid. You took them all down by yourself?"I nodded."Wait, I thought they were armed?" Rebecca asked anxiously. The officer shook his head. "We searched them. There weren't any guns."Rebecca turned to me, confusion written all over her face.I gave her a quick wink. "Oh. I must've been mistaken. It was pretty dark."The police soon took the three men away. Before leaving, the man with the snake tattoo shot me a murderous glare.I wasn't afraid in the slightest. I knew he'd never walk free again. With the home invasion and his previous criminal records, he'd probably spend the rest of his life behind bars.Once they were gone, only Rebecca and I wer

I never expected to see that man again. That night, Rebecca had an important business dinner, and Mom and Dad were both away on business, leaving me alone in the house.Sometime after midnight, a noise downstairs woke me. I quietly slipped out of my room and crept over to the second-floor railing to look down.Three figures were rummaging through the living room. One of them was unmistakably the man with the snake tattoo from earlier that day. They were here to rob the house.I didn't scream or call the police. Instead, I quietly went back to my room, locked the door, and called Rebecca."Hello?" It took a long time for her to answer, and I could hear loud music and chatter in the background."Rebecca, there are burglars in the house," I said calmly as if I were stating a fact. There was a brief pause before she spoke again, her voice tense and urgent. "Don't be scared. Hide somewhere. I'm coming home right now!""No need," I said. "I just need you to do one thing for me."Re

"Give me one more chance, please?" pleaded Rebecca.I looked down at her and stayed silent for a moment. Then I said, "Okay."Rebecca's head snapped up, a flicker of surprise and hope in her eyes.I crouched down in front of her and gave her an innocent smile. "You want to make it up to me, right? That's easy."I pointed toward the tall sycamore tree outside the window. "Jump from there. If you survive, I'll forgive you."The hope on Rebecca's face instantly vanished. After Isaac was sent away, the house fell eerily quiet. Mom and Dad tried to make up for everything by giving me more material comforts and attention, but I still felt like an outsider in my own family. They found me the best psychiatrists in the city. They all said my PTSD was severe and that I'd need long-term treatment. From then on, Rebecca drove me to my sessions every weekend. We barely spoke during the drives. She was like a dutiful chauffeur, and I was just a passenger, completely detached from everything

"Take your son and get the hell out of here!" Dad snarled. The couple flinched and didn't dare say another word. They dragged Isaac toward the door as he screamed and fought to get away. He desperately clung to the doorframe, digging his fingernails into it as he refused to let go."Mom! Dad! Rebecca! I'm sorry! I don't want to go with them! They're monsters!" His handsome face was twisted with fear, making him almost unrecognizable.Outside, the woman started cursing loudly, while the man barked impatiently."Shut your mouth, you cursed bastard! If you weren't so useless, we wouldn't have had to come all this way!" the man chided. "Keep moving! If we get back late, your brothers and sisters will starve!"Their voices gradually faded into the distance.Silence fell over the living room. Mom finally broke down, burying her face in her hands as she sobbed quietly.Dad slumped against the sofa, looking as if he'd aged ten years in an instant.Rebecca stood by the window, staring i

Isaac was rushed to the hospital. Lying in the hospital bed, he cried, his voice barely a whisper."Mom, I'm really sorry. Please don't kick me out. I promise I'll never do it again. I'll listen to whatever you say. Just please don't send me away," he pleaded. There was no sympathy in Mom's eyes, only cold disappointment. "Isaac, do you remember the day you came to our family?"Isaac stared at Mom in silence."You were small and skinny, just like you are now. You held my hand and promised you'd be a good boy." Mom furrowed her brows."We believed you and treated you like our own flesh and blood," she said. "We gave you all our love, trying to make up for the guilt we felt over Carl. And what did you do?"She yanked her hand away from his grip. "You lied, put on an act, and bullied Carl. You took our love for granted and used it as an excuse to do whatever you wanted. Isaac, I'm so disappointed in you."With that, Mom turned and walked out without looking back.Isaac scrambled o

The file also included the case records of the trafficking ring that had abducted me. The documents detailed the horrific crimes the group had committed. One child's name was highlighted—Gary.According to the report, Gary had been the smallest and quietest of all the children. But he was also the only child who could clearly draw the gang leader's face and map out the group's hideout after the children were rescued. His intel helped the police track down the criminal group that had terrorized the area for years and arrest all of them. The boy known as Gary was me.After reading through the entire file, Mom sat alone in her study all night. The first thing she did the next morning was dismiss all the household staff and replace them with professional security guards.Next, she went to my school herself and arranged for me to take a leave of absence. She said, "Until my son is truly better, I won't let anyone hurt him again."Dad didn't object, and Rebecca was unusually quiet.
