Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
Looking at my family's grim faces, I felt completely exhausted. I had no idea what it would take to make them happy.

When Isaac lost his dog, he put a collar around my neck, made me eat dog food, and forced me to sleep in a doghouse, turning me into his new plaything.

When he went camping with his friends, he locked me tight inside a sealed sleeping bag and kicked me down the hillside.

My head and body slammed into the sharp rocks. The pain was so intense that I eventually went numb and could barely breathe.

Looking down at my twisted, broken body, he just curled his lip in contempt.

"I guess the quality of this sleeping bag is pretty terrible," he said. "I'll definitely leave a bad review! Good thing you tested it out for me."

This time around, I didn't resist his torture anymore. I didn't know why Mom, Dad, and Rebecca were still upset with me.

After the doctor finished examining me, Mom came in with a cup of warm milk and sat beside my bed.

She looked at me with a complicated expression. "Carl, tell me. Do you... really hate this family?"

I shook my head. "No."

"Then why did you do those things? Why do you keep hurting yourself?" Mom pressed.

I held the cup of warm milk and took small sips before answering seriously, "I just wanted everyone to be happy."

Mom's eyes instantly welled up with tears. "You're my son. You don't have to try to please anyone."

I set the cup down and looked up at her. "But ever since I came back, Isaac hasn't been happy, and neither has Rebecca. Mom, was finding me a mistake?"

Mom was stunned for a moment. She pulled me into a tight embrace and comforted me. "No, Carl. How could it be a mistake? You're my precious son."

Her hug was warm, yet it reminded me of one of my previous lives.

Back then, Isaac had slashed his own hand with a knife and cried as he collapsed into Mom's arms.

She locked me in the pitch-black storage room and let Isaac turn on the gas valve, forcing me to breathe in the fumes until I learned my lesson and stopped "hurting" my brother.

At that time, I didn't understand what I had done wrong. I just wanted to survive and be loved by everyone. Yet now that I only sought death, Mom was calling me her precious child.

The next day, the family held a meeting.

Isaac had cried all night, leaving his eyes swollen. "I really didn't push him," he sobbed. "I was just… scared. I was scared that once he came back, you wouldn't want me anymore."

Rebecca felt sorry for him and immediately defended him. "Mom, Isaac didn't mean it. He's just insecure. Look at Carl. He's only been back for a few days, and he's already turned the entire house upside down!"

She pointed at me with pure disgust. "There's something seriously wrong with him!"

Dad rubbed his temples, letting out a helpless sigh. "We can't go on like this. Let's find a psychiatrist to get Carl some help."

On the day of the appointment, I was remarkably cooperative, answering every question the psychiatrist asked.

"Why do you keep wanting to die?"

Sitting on the soft sofa, I smiled and replied, "Because it's the easiest way to make all the problems go away."

The psychiatrist adjusted his glasses and tried to reason with me. "Have you ever considered that if you die, the people who love you will be heartbroken?"

I blinked, asking out of genuine curiosity, "Love me? Do you mean like the workers at the orphanage, who claimed they loved me while watching the other kids beat me up and doing nothing?

"Or like the human traffickers, who called me their good boy while locking me in a dog cage?

"Or… like my sister, who warns me not to upset her precious brother but only pulls me out of the pool right when I'm about to drown?"

I leaned closer to the psychiatrist and whispered, "Doctor, they don't love me. They're just afraid that if I die in their house, it'll bring them trouble. They think I'm sick and need treatment. But I'm not sick. I'm just… giving them what they want.

"I do whatever it takes to make them happy. If they want me to die, I'll just die. Is that still not good enough?"

The psychiatrist's hand froze in midair, and his face drained of all color.

Rebecca rushed over and grabbed me, checking me from head to toe."Are you okay? Did you get hurt?" she asked worriedly.I shook my head. "What could possibly happen to me? They're the ones who got hurt."The officer in charge finally snapped out of it. He walked over and said with a look of genuine admiration, "You're something, kid. You took them all down by yourself?"I nodded."Wait, I thought they were armed?" Rebecca asked anxiously. The officer shook his head. "We searched them. There weren't any guns."Rebecca turned to me, confusion written all over her face.I gave her a quick wink. "Oh. I must've been mistaken. It was pretty dark."The police soon took the three men away. Before leaving, the man with the snake tattoo shot me a murderous glare.I wasn't afraid in the slightest. I knew he'd never walk free again. With the home invasion and his previous criminal records, he'd probably spend the rest of his life behind bars.Once they were gone, only Rebecca and I wer

I never expected to see that man again. That night, Rebecca had an important business dinner, and Mom and Dad were both away on business, leaving me alone in the house.Sometime after midnight, a noise downstairs woke me. I quietly slipped out of my room and crept over to the second-floor railing to look down.Three figures were rummaging through the living room. One of them was unmistakably the man with the snake tattoo from earlier that day. They were here to rob the house.I didn't scream or call the police. Instead, I quietly went back to my room, locked the door, and called Rebecca."Hello?" It took a long time for her to answer, and I could hear loud music and chatter in the background."Rebecca, there are burglars in the house," I said calmly as if I were stating a fact. There was a brief pause before she spoke again, her voice tense and urgent. "Don't be scared. Hide somewhere. I'm coming home right now!""No need," I said. "I just need you to do one thing for me."Re

"Give me one more chance, please?" pleaded Rebecca.I looked down at her and stayed silent for a moment. Then I said, "Okay."Rebecca's head snapped up, a flicker of surprise and hope in her eyes.I crouched down in front of her and gave her an innocent smile. "You want to make it up to me, right? That's easy."I pointed toward the tall sycamore tree outside the window. "Jump from there. If you survive, I'll forgive you."The hope on Rebecca's face instantly vanished. After Isaac was sent away, the house fell eerily quiet. Mom and Dad tried to make up for everything by giving me more material comforts and attention, but I still felt like an outsider in my own family. They found me the best psychiatrists in the city. They all said my PTSD was severe and that I'd need long-term treatment. From then on, Rebecca drove me to my sessions every weekend. We barely spoke during the drives. She was like a dutiful chauffeur, and I was just a passenger, completely detached from everything

"Take your son and get the hell out of here!" Dad snarled. The couple flinched and didn't dare say another word. They dragged Isaac toward the door as he screamed and fought to get away. He desperately clung to the doorframe, digging his fingernails into it as he refused to let go."Mom! Dad! Rebecca! I'm sorry! I don't want to go with them! They're monsters!" His handsome face was twisted with fear, making him almost unrecognizable.Outside, the woman started cursing loudly, while the man barked impatiently."Shut your mouth, you cursed bastard! If you weren't so useless, we wouldn't have had to come all this way!" the man chided. "Keep moving! If we get back late, your brothers and sisters will starve!"Their voices gradually faded into the distance.Silence fell over the living room. Mom finally broke down, burying her face in her hands as she sobbed quietly.Dad slumped against the sofa, looking as if he'd aged ten years in an instant.Rebecca stood by the window, staring i

Isaac was rushed to the hospital. Lying in the hospital bed, he cried, his voice barely a whisper."Mom, I'm really sorry. Please don't kick me out. I promise I'll never do it again. I'll listen to whatever you say. Just please don't send me away," he pleaded. There was no sympathy in Mom's eyes, only cold disappointment. "Isaac, do you remember the day you came to our family?"Isaac stared at Mom in silence."You were small and skinny, just like you are now. You held my hand and promised you'd be a good boy." Mom furrowed her brows."We believed you and treated you like our own flesh and blood," she said. "We gave you all our love, trying to make up for the guilt we felt over Carl. And what did you do?"She yanked her hand away from his grip. "You lied, put on an act, and bullied Carl. You took our love for granted and used it as an excuse to do whatever you wanted. Isaac, I'm so disappointed in you."With that, Mom turned and walked out without looking back.Isaac scrambled o
