Chapter 3

Author: Hanblock
"You… What are you…" Baldie stammered as his cigarette slipped from his fingers.

"Call her now," I repeated, sitting down on the cleanest slab of stone that I could find.

The pain that was radiating from my waist was beginning to numb. That side of my shirt was already thoroughly soaked, sticking to my skin.

Mom arrived ten minutes later.

She had dropped the act. The artificial marks of zombification had been wiped clean, revealing smooth, rosy skin that made it blatantly obvious she was well cared for.

Her assistant, Richard Peterson, and a group of muscular men trailed behind her.

Mom barely showed any remorse when she spotted me sitting on the slab. On the contrary, the way she looked at me gave off the impression that she was scrutinizing me as if she were superior to me.

"I guess there's no need for me to keep up the act any longer since you've discovered the truth, Terence," she said, "The zombies and the apocalypse aren't real. I also didn't get bitten by a zombie."

I looked up at her and asked, "Why?"

Mom sighed. She smoothed down her tailored coat before she answered, "Because I'm rich, Terence. Your father left me a business empire when he passed away. I have to be cautious.

"It's why I decided to put you through a test for a month. I wanted to find out what truly mattered to you when your life was on the line—me or money.

"Not only did I want to test you, but I also wanted to strengthen our bond as mother and son. Everything that I did was to prepare you so that you would have an easier time when it was your turn to take over the business."

I braced my fists on my knees, gritting my teeth as I rose to my feet. An explosive pain lanced through the side of my waist from the excessive movement. My vision turned black for a split second, but I kept my feet steady on the ground.

"Was everything just a test for you, Mom? I jumped off the second floor of a building and broke my leg to get medicine for you. I fought with feral dogs just to get some clean bread for you. Do you think that I deserve everything that happened to me?"

Mom frowned. She looked at me impatiently and said, "I know that you faced some hardship, Terence, but I was with you the entire time. Also, I already told you that I would compensate you in the future. I'll transfer an extra 5% of the company's shares to you."

Her eyes were filled with bewilderment as she looked at me.

I suddenly started chuckling in a low voice, and my eyes reddened slightly.

"You're so smart, Mom. You planned everything. Truth be told, I managed to get the serum. I had to exchange one of my kidneys for it."

Mom was briefly stunned before she nonchalantly waved her hand and said, "I know. Mr. Loden already told me. The surgery was a success. It's only a minor wound, so it'll be fully recovered in the next two days. But you shouldn't have lied to me, Terence."

"A minor wound?" I repeated, pointing at my waist with a shaking finger. "The person who cut me open didn't even wear a mask. He wasn't wearing a white coat either. He also didn't give me any anesthetic… before he forcefully… removed my kidney from my body."

I had to muster all the strength that I had left in my body to force the last few words past my lips. My voice sounded like it had been rubbed raw with sandpaper.

Mom was startled by my appearance and subconsciously stepped back.

"Were you scared out of your wits, Terence? Or are you still stuck in your role? I already told you. That doctor is a professional whom I spent a small fortune to hire. Why wouldn't he give you any anesthetic before he operated on you?"

She turned to look at Richard, who was standing behind her, and asked sternly, "Didn't you explain the situation to him? Or did he not follow the script?"

"I contacted Dr. Brandon Loden from Dawnlight Hospital, Mrs. Sawyer," Richard explained, looking confused. "He was waiting in the operating room there. All of his equipment was imported from abroad…"

I ignored their conversation. My body felt like it was growing heavier. My consciousness was slipping away beneath the high fever brought on by the infection ravaging my body.

"Mom…" I wheezed through heavy breaths. "The specialist you mentioned… I didn't see him at all…"

Winter had arrived, bringing heavy snowfall with it.Mom shivered violently as she huddled under an awning at the corner of the street. Her tattered clothes were so filthy that it was impossible to tell their original color. Her hair was a complete mess, and her face was covered in chilblains.Passersby gave her a wide berth, looking at her with disdain, and some even kicked her as they went by."Get away from me, you damned beggar!"Mom didn't try to avoid their harassment. She clutched a stale, half-eaten slice of bread in her hand and nibbled on it carefully.I thought about our time in the sewers.I was just like her back then, shivering violently in the cold as I gave her my only food.I remembered how Mom had said that everything was just a test. She no longer had a person to test. She also didn't have anyone to deliver a serum to her.I floated next to her and studied her hands, which were covered in chilblains.A young girl looked at Mom when she walked past. She tugg

Mom froze in place as she stared at the empty bed.A long time passed before she suddenly burst into laughter."He's gone? So… I endured that procedure for nothing?"Her smile morphed into a grimace as she brushed her fingers across the wound on her waist."Did you do this on purpose, Terence? You didn't want to give me a chance to atone for my sins. You think I don't deserve it, don't you?"I floated next to the bed and took in Mom's manic expression. It wasn't that I didn't want to give her a chance to atone for her sins. It was just that even hell would have rejected her kidney. Besides, the transplant was hopeless to begin with. My body was already past the point of no return. I would still die even after the transplant, so it was pointless for me to receive it.…My funeral was a grand affair.Mom was dressed in black. She knelt before the altar and kept knocking her head against the floor. Her forehead was a gruesome sight. The scabs that formed over the open wound ke

"Take mine!" Mom shouted as she leaped to her feet, with a crazed look in her eyes. "I'm his mother, so we're definitely a match! Take my kidney and give it to Terence! Do it now!"Brandon was briefly stunned before he said, "But we still need to verify whether your kidney is a match for him, Mrs. Sawyer. The surgery also has its own set of risks—""I'm not scared of any risks!" Mom exclaimed, grabbing Brandon's hand and digging her nails into his flesh. "I'm willing to give my life up for him as long as he survives!"A fierce and determined look appeared in her eyes after she took a deep breath. "Also, I have a request. Don't give me any anesthetic during the surgery and use the bluntest scalpel that you have."Brandon nearly jumped out of his skin upon hearing her words."Have you lost your mind, Mrs. Sawyer? That's impossible! You'll die of pain if you undergo surgery without any anesthetic! That's also against medical regulations. We will never do such a thing!""Do as I say!

Mom slapped herself again. It didn't take long before her face began to swell. The actors were scared out of their wits. They stood on the sidelines, not daring to say a single word or leave.I floated in the air and watched the scene unfold. A deep sense of helplessness spread through me.I wondered why Mom was hurting herself. It didn't matter how much she slapped herself. It wouldn't reduce the pain that I was forced to endure in the past.Just then, the sounds of a commotion resounded from the end of the hallway.A few bodyguards approached Mom while hauling a man with them. The man was covered in filth, and a pair of handcuffs had been clapped around his wrists. It was the doctor who had operated on me.Mom's eyes immediately turned bloodshot when she spotted him. She snatched a bat from one of the bodyguards before she lunged at him."You're the one who cut Terence's kidney out! I'm going to kill you!" she shrieked as she smashed the bat against the doctor's leg.The do

The ambulance finally made it onto an asphalt road.Although the shaking had stabilized, I could feel my body becoming lighter and lighter. The unbearable pain was slowly fading away, replaced by a floating sensation.I seemed to have floated to the ceiling of the ambulance.I looked at my body that was lying on the stretcher. My face had turned ashen, and my lips had turned purple. The rise and fall of my chest was getting slower.I looked at Mom. She clutched my hand and buried her face into my wide palm as she cried her heart out."Don't fall asleep, Terence…" she begged. "We'll be at the hospital soon. You'll be alright once we get there… I'll find the best kidney for you. I'll fix up your leg too… I'll never test you again. I'll stay by your side every day, alright?""Mom…" I thought to myself. "Money can buy a new kidney and medicine, but it can't buy a person's life."My soul floated in midair, and I watched the flashing ambulance lights as it disappeared into the night.

  • Real Sacrifice in a Fake Apocalypse   Chapter 5

The ambulance lurched violently as the wheels drove over the rubble-filled ruins.Black spots exploded in my vision when the ambulance rattled, and a metallic taste surged up my throat.Mom knelt next to me, gripping the edges of the stretcher as if her life depended on it. Her knuckles had turned white from the amount of force she was exerting."Drive faster!" she shouted at the driver. The driver didn't even bother turning to look at her when he anxiously shouted back, "The roads are broken, Mrs. Sawyer! There are potholes everywhere! I can't drive any faster even if I wanted to! The entire ambulance will go flying if I do!"The roads were broken. To create the so-called apocalypse—to make me believe that the world had been overrun by a zombie outbreak—Mom had destroyed all the roads that led toward the city, leaving a single, thin path that was riddled with potholes. The real doctor, Brandon Loden, was crouched next to me at that moment. He was sweating profusely as he gave
