"He walked right past me?"

"Why did he do that?"

"Why was everyone rejecting me suddenly?"

I turned immediately and followed him.

"Drew!" I called out.

He paused right where he was about to cross to the other side of the road.

But he didn't look back.

"Drew what is the matter?"I said in between breaths as I panted.

"Are you going to walk out on me too?"

"Along with everyone else?"

"Mrs Rebecca..." He turned immediately. His facial expression, sympathetic.

"Mrs Rebecca that...."

"Enough with the Mrs Rebecca okay!" I cut him short impulsively.

"Okay... Rebecca, .." he counted his words, cautious of what next to say, hoping it would not trigger me.

My cheeks flushed gently at the trails of nervousness I could see in him.

"What I'm trying to say is I would never walk out on you Rebecca, but I just don't..."

As he spoke, I could feel my dove eyes forming tears from underneath.

"I just don't want to be part of you anymore. like you said, 'you are married.'"

  • Rebecca’s broken vows   Chapter twenty four: the test kit

And what if the test proves she’s not pregnant?” Fiona’s voice cut through the still air like a sharp blade. She leaned forward on the edge of the table, eyes glinting with something darker than concern.Derrick exhaled, long and tired, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Then she will be gone. That doesn’t change anything.”he wrapped his palm around hers saying.“Gone?” Fiona scoffed. Pulling out her hand. “Gone isn’t enough, Derrick. What happens when ‘gone’ finds her way back? What happens when she shows up three months from now with another story, another plea? Loose ends unravel everything. You should know that by now.”Rebecca’s stomach dropped as she listened from her corner, her knees pulled to her chest. Every word pressed down like a stone, heavier and heavier.Derrick’s voice steadied, hard. “No. I won’t cross that line. She disappears, that’s final. I’ll make sure of it.”Fiona’s tongue clicked against the roof of her mouth, slow, deliberate. “You’ve gone soft. You always

  • Rebecca’s broken vows   Chapter twenty three: double crossed.

I felt a shadowy low blow punched up on my abdomen as my ears rung with the disbelief. What?!Oh definitely no! For Gods sake! No!If he was with the divorce papers, then what was this piece of paper under my shirt poking my chest every now and then? I winced. I sighed furiously as the disappointment clawed in on me inch by inch. All that effort, it had all been for nothing. I groaned internally, still careful not to make a fuss. “why would you think they'd be gone, the documents were well placed in the room, weren't they” Fiona asked, skeptical in her tone. Derrick hesitated for a second. “With Rebecca suddenly on the loose, who knows what she might have done to warrant her leaving her poor father behind.”“Thats all the more reason why we need her here, we don't want loose ends anywhere, cant you see?” She flicked her tongue. Turning to face Ryan, she said,“ especially the baby.”“And when we find her?, then what?, we wait till first light till we order a pack of test kits a

For the first time, as I leaned softly against the door, my chest rising and falling in quiet rhythm, I felt no hint of nervousness.‎‎ No fear.‎‎And no heartache.‎‎ No trembling or anticipation of what Derrick might say, or worse, what he might do.‎‎It was Still, this sudden calm that wrapped itself around me.‎‎ Only silence in my head, and the steady beat of my heart.‎‎ I saw it also, —an inescapable flicker in his eyes. ‎‎Was it Panic?‎‎ It was gone as quickly as it appeared, but I caught it, and it fueled me.‎‎My fingers pressed tightly against the envelope hidden inside my shirt. ‎‎The sharp edges pricked against my skin, reminding me of the what was stolen from me. ‎‎It has to be it, I prayed silently. The divorce papers. The key to finally breaking free. ‎‎‎I had shifted it into a firmer position, securing it close to me, as if it were both a weapon and a shield.‎‎‎Then i swallowed as I shut my eyes, traveling back in memor

I submissively opened my eyes to meet hers, but instead, an envelop was slid into my corner. ‎‎The burning familiarity of that envelop was even more breath taking as my eyes widened in realization.‎still, I made no move, still did not release my breath. ‎‎But just how long could I wait under here till something goes wrong ? “still have not found it." Fiona said as she rose, her voice dimmed by irritation.‎‎The sounds of wardrobes opened and closed.‎‎"my hair is soaked wet, and you know how much I hate feeling wet in these," she winced. The sound of her arms falling to her sides. ‎‎"I know you still are upset about what Ryan said," Derrick chirped in. ‎ I hadn't realized when he entered the room.‎"Of course I'm not," Fiona responded almost too quickly. ‎‎I imagined she had drifted her eyes as well.‎‎He then sniffed in her soaked hair deeply.‎‎"well if you claim you are not upset,” he continued “then what were you searching for in this wardr

"I need to see my sister." I heard myself say ‎" hmm" he placed his palms over his chin, while his eyes rolled looking at the ceiling. Standing before Ryan upfront, my heart exploded with annoyance, but still there was something settling about the way his sleek jet black hair with tingles of silver color fell slightly on his shoulders. One thing was certain, he looked nothing like the musty cabman earlier.‎"I don't think that's what you were doing.' he lifted an eyebrow saying. ‎"Excuse me?" I swallowed, saying. ‎"I think you were snooping around." ‎"I just said I needed to see Fiona, to put an end to this madness," I gestured.‎"the main door was open, you could have put an end to this madness by running away." ‎Oh, the bloody bastard knew.‎" I told you I was going to help you, and what did you do with that golden opportunity?"‎His eyes shone with mischief. ‎‎I kissed my teeth, and shook my head slightly. ‎" I'm not the stupid one, you are." I clocked him. ‎" you cl

One thing was certain, that was, i didn't have the time to think ‘if’ i could pull off this “mission impossible” stunt. I only knew i had to do something. So i rose, One heartbeat at a time, one fear at a time, one step at a time. And just as i was about to move, a familiar tough palm clutched on to my arm. I spun immediately, on reflex, i nearly seized my own breath. “Dad?” I cried. Placing my palms over my mouth so i don't attract attention to us. I peeped around again, to be certain no one was coming. “Are you okay?” “Are you hurt?” “What did they do to you?” I asked repeatedly as i assessed him. “I thought you had relapsed!”“Im fine.” He extended his charming smile. “Its just a little prank i had to pull, to get those bozos attention away from me.” He grunted, Suddenly, he clutched his chest painfully and his eyes rolled backwards. letting out a muffled wail, he leaned forward and abruptly hung his neck.Looking totally blank.I stood frozen, “Dad?” I forced my self to
