A loud bang on the door shattered my sleep like glass. I jolted awake, blinking against the morning light.

Another bang. Then Viktor’s voice.

“Jessica!”

I groaned softly. “Seriously? It’s barely morning.”

Dragging myself out of bed, I padded to the door and pulled it open.

There he was, arms tense at his sides, eyes already blazing. Jeremy stood beside him in his pajamas, frowning.

I glanced at the clock behind me. School should’ve started prep by now. What were they doing still in sleepwear?

“Good morning, Viktor,” I said sweetly.

“Why is Jeremy not ready for school yet?” he snapped.

I looked at Jeremy, then back at him with a casual shrug. “You’ll have to ask Jeremy that. He’s standing right here.”

“Jessica!” His voice had me almost flinching, but I composed myself.

“Why have you not gotten Jeremy ready for school?”

I mouthed an ‘oh’. “You should've made your question clear.” I dragged my fingers through my hair, yawning tiredly.
