Chapter 1

"You just need to keep raising the price when the bidding starts later, Janice. Theresa's foolish enough to pay the highest price," Luke Anderson said.

"I'll give all the money that I get from her to you later, so you can establish your business. Don't worry. She definitely won't allow the contract to fall into anyone else's hands."

I realized that Luke had also been reborn as I stood a short distance away and eavesdropped on his conversation with Janice Braxton.

In my past life, I had thrown all caution to the wind and paid the highest price for Luke during the auction. It was why he believed that I would do the same in this life.

I barked out a mocking laugh. Since that was how they wanted to play, I didn't mind going along with their farce for the time being.

Several wealthy people with malicious intentions toward Luke took their seats when the gavel was brought down on the block.

"I heard that he's the campus heartthrob. It'll definitely be a steal if I can secure him for a few million dollars!"

"I heard that he hasn't even graduated yet. He's so young! I want to have some fun with him too!"

Luke shot a resentful look at me and hissed, "Say something to defend me!"

I simply averted my gaze and didn't spare him a single glance.

Janice was wearing a provoking expression when she sat down next to me.

"You don't actually think of yourself as a savior, do you, Theresa? Even if you spend money to save Luke, he'll just think that you're using the contract to blackmail him."

I chuckled and said, "If I remember correctly, don't you owe your creditors millions of dollars?"

I had already discovered that Janice was living off someone else's money in my past life. When the man's wife found out about her existence, she forced Janice to return all the money that the man had spent on her.

Janice had no choice but to take out loans to repay the man, which was why she had a mountain of debt to deal with.

Luke had transferred my company and all my assets to Janice so she could pay off her debts.

Janice's humiliation swiftly morphed into fury. She gritted her teeth and angrily raised her paddle, calling out, "50 million dollars!"

Luke, who was currently on stage, shot a grateful look in Janice's direction, looking as if he actually believed that she could afford to pay such an exorbitant price.

I arched my brow before raising my paddle as well. "100 million."

The other bidders were stunned. Those who had been excitedly sharing their unsavory thoughts about Luke earlier also put down their paddles.

Luke and Janice exchanged glances. The cunning and gleeful glints in their eyes were blatantly obvious.

However, Janice wasn't satisfied just yet. She raised her paddle again and called out, "150 million!"

She then shot a provoking look at me and sneered, "If I remember correctly, you have no choice but to pay the highest price once the bidding price exceeds 100 million dollars."

I smiled and nodded. With everyone watching me, I began to raise my paddle before putting it down again. "Apologies. I give up."

I rose to my feet and left the auction after I was done speaking.

Realizing that he had made a miscalculation, Luke chased after me and grabbed my arm with reddened and panicked eyes.

"Have you lost your mind?" he demanded. "Janice can't pay 150 million dollars! Hurry and pay the highest price for my contract!"

Sweat beaded all across Janice's body. She cursed and started berating me. "He's right! How could you act so despicably, Theresa? I thought your feelings for Luke were genuine. You're so rich. Don't tell me that you're unwilling to pay the highest price when it's just spare change to you?"

I scoffed and said, "You're right. The highest price is just spare change for me."

I turned toward the stage and raised my paddle, signaling that I wanted to pay the highest price.

Luke scoffed. His voice was dripping with mockery when he sneered, "I knew that you definitely wouldn't let this opportunity slip through your fingers—"

I interrupted him before he could finish his sentence, addressing the host instead. "I would like to purchase that oil painting. Please deliver it to my home later."

Luke's hands trembled with anger. He stared at me with bloodshot eyes and pointed an accusing finger at me, but he couldn't say a single word.

I turned around and left without sparing him another glance.

Right before they left, Arthur and I shared a look. His eyes were shining with determination.I turned off the livestream and ended this farce.I smashed the box to pieces and saved Luke.Luke tried to burrow into my embrace. He was stuttering so badly that he could barely form a coherent sentence."T-That was so scary, Theresa. I would never have forgiven myself for the rest of my life if you had died right in front of my eyes. You shouldn't have come to save me! Fiona's too ambitious and dangerous! I should never have asked you to save me!"I shifted to the side and stuffed my hands into my pockets, looking at him indifferently."But this was Fiona's and your goal, wasn't it? You only have yourself to blame for getting tied up in the box."Luke whipped his head up. Tears spilled from his eyes as he asked, "You know everything, don't you, Theresa? I'm sorry. I was too selfish. I just wanted to be with you."She promised me that as long as I played along with her, you would com

Before I got out of the car, I called Arthur and told him to look for me if I didn't call him in the next two hours.Fiona told the bodyguards to search my body and ensure that no one had followed me."Someone's being cautious," I said mockingly to the bodyguards.Unfortunately for them, they would end up empty-handed after their search. After all, it was impossible for them to know that I had installed surveillance cameras in my retinas.A lazy smile stretched across Fiona's lips as she looked at me."What did I tell you, Theresa? I knew that you would come."I glanced at her and asked, "Where's Luke?"Fiona pointed upstairs and teased, "I'm having someone punish him upstairs. You're better off not looking for him. I fear that your heart might break.""I have to make sure that he's safe."Ignoring Fiona's protests, I made my way upstairs to the second floor.Luke was there, but someone had bound him against a pole and submerged him in a box of water. The water level had alre

I also put in a good word for Ashton with Richard, which resulted in the latter handing over some of Slater Corporation's authority to Ashton. The two of us buried ourselves in our respective projects. We were so swamped with work that months passed without us seeing each other.Fiona sought me out, putting on a pleasant facade as she offered me a cup of coffee."You look like you're working yourself to the bone these days, Theresa. Do you want to take a break? You can let me handle the projects."I didn't bother to spare her a single glance."No need to pretend that we share a deep, sisterly bond here," I said without beating around the bush. "In fact, you're quite audacious for considering yourself as my sister when you're nothing more than an illegitimate child."Fiona's expression stiffened. She burst into laughter before tossing two photos onto the desk."You're right. I'm just an illegitimate child. But no matter how lowly my status is, even I know better than to treat a m

Luke grabbed me and spoke to me in a softer voice than earlier."I… I've seen the photos that Janice showed you that day at the bar. I also found out that she was using my money to pay off her debts instead of establishing her own business."I looked at him indifferently and asked, "And why are you telling me this?"Luke pursed his lips. He stumbled over his words for a long time before he finally mumbled, "I'm sorry for misunderstanding you."I nodded, then pulled open the car door and prepared to leave, saying, "Okay. I've heard your apology."Luke's eyes immediately reddened upon hearing my clipped and formal tone. He threw himself in front of the car and refused to let me leave."I've already thrown my pride away to beg you, Theresa," he roared in a choked-up voice. "What else do you want from me? Why don't we just pretend that none of this ever happened? Why don't you break off your engagement to Ashton and get engaged to me instead?"I've already made myself clear in the m

I wasn't all that interested in taking revenge on Luke, but I also didn't tell Ashton to stop.In the next second, Ashton leaned down and kissed me.Luke's eyes immediately reddened as he stood rooted to the spot below the stage. If the bodyguards weren't stationed around the stage, he probably would have rushed up the stage to separate Ashton and me.In my past life, I could only swallow the anger I felt whenever I saw Luke being intimate with other women. I didn't have a chance to turn the tables on him—to force him to watch as I was intimate with other men.Luke was breathing heavily, reminiscent of a fish out of water. He was teetering on the edge of a mental breakdown and couldn't even breathe properly. At that moment, he finally seemed to understand why I had fallen to my knees, clutching my head and wailing in my past life—because he now wanted nothing more than to do the same. However, Luke refused to give up on the last shred of his pitiful pride in front of Ashton, his

Not even three days later, Ashton Slater showed up at Hall Group. He sank into a seat in my office and said, "Go ahead. Tell me what you need from me that you have to offer a marriage of convenience as a bargaining chip."I drummed my fingers against the surface of the desk and said, "Our families have been friends for generations. Your father also gets a vote when it involves Hall Group's decisions. I would like him to speak in my favor during the shareholder meetings.""You don't actually believe that Dad's words could convince Mr. Hall to let you inherit Hall Group, do you?" Ashton asked in disbelief. "Fiona is a force to be reckoned with. Besides, Dad doesn't have that much influence over Hall Group's decisions."I shook my head. A plan was already beginning to form in my mind."It doesn't matter. Besides, your father has been urging you to get married, right? If the two of us enter a fake engagement, your problem will be solved, no?"Ashton wrapped his hands around his cup of
