Chapter 2

I felt a chill in my chest.

The onslaught of comments continued.

"Don't blame your brother, Skylar. He just wants you to be happy!"

"Laura is such a hidden gem. You'll never go wrong choosing her."

"Yeah, hurry up and say yes to her. Once the Moore family starts putting pressure on you, the old codger is gonna tear into you in front of everyone!"

I took a deep breath after reading the comments and turned to Laura. "Are you sure that ring was from me?"

"Skylar, I know you're embarrassed, but my feelings for you are true. The moment I got your ring, I had everything prepared. This is all I own. I'm willing to spend my whole life with you!" she said.

Phil let out a cold laugh. "Are you trying to be a two-timer, Skylar? The Moore family might not be perfect, but we're not about to fight someone like her for you!"

"This engagement—"

"Since you're unwilling, let's just call off the engagement," I cut in evenly. "The Moore and Stone families are evenly matched. A union between us would be a power move for both sides. But as you can see, my dad and brother are dead set on forcing Laura on me. They even stole my work and gave it to her.

"Therefore, I can't go through with the engagement right now. In fact, I need to call the cops and get to the bottom of this."

At that, Phil froze, and Dad's face flushed with rage. "What nonsense are you spouting? Who are you accusing of stealing your stuff? You obviously gave the ring to Laura yourself!"

"That was a piece I wanted to submit for a competition. Why would I ever give it to someone else? And besides, I didn't even know her before this. I'd have to be insane to just hand it over to her!" I retorted.

With that, I pulled out my phone, ready to call the police. However, Brandon barreled over and hurled my phone to the floor.

"Skylar, stop causing a scene! You and Laura have long… I know you're too embarrassed to admit it, so I'll just say it for you. I'll take your place and go through with the marriage with the Moores. That way, you won't have to feel torn anymore."

He ran to Phil. "Mr. Moore, Skylar is just worried that this whole thing will blow up and get out of hand. That's why he's acting like this. Still, the engagement between the Moores and the Stones will go ahead as planned. Don't worry—we won't go back on our word."

Hearing that, Gwen glanced at him, then at me.

I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh. "This marriage alliance was arranged by my mom when she was still alive. Even if I step aside, it still won't be your turn to carry on with the engagement."

I turned to Phil. "Mr. Moore, if you trust me, please help me file a police report. Once everything is cleared up, I'll give your company the Nanvard project as a thank-you."

Lastly, I looked at Laura. "As for you, Laura, you'd better think carefully about how you're going to explain yourself in a bit."

My stance was crystal clear, and Phil hesitated. However, Dad snapped, "You're a disgrace to the family, you ingrate! Just how far are you planning to take this?"

"Am I the one making a scene, or are you two the ones with the hidden agenda?" I shot back. "This engagement was something Mom arranged before she died. You had your eye on it the whole time. You want to steal it for your precious son instead! Ask yourself whether he's worthy of it!"

A shadow flickered in Brandon's eyes, but he quickly grabbed my arm and put on his usual wounded act. "Skylar, how can you think of me like that? I'm doing this for your own good. I know I don't measure up, but I'm also a son of the Stone family, aren't I? And stop denying it—hasn't marrying Laura always been what you wanted?"

Even now, he was still trying to corner me.

Catching the complicated look in Gwen's eyes pushed me over the edge. I finally lost control and punched Brandon squarely in the face. "That's for running your filthy mouth!"

Immediately after, I was also punched. My head snapped to the side from the impact. Dad had done it, and he'd put so much force into it that it knocked me straight to the floor.

Phil looked enraged. "Enough of this nonsense! How you discipline your son is your family's business. We won't force this anymore. Gwen, we're leaving!"

He turned and left with her.

I panicked and moved to go after them, but Laura yanked me back. "Skylar, trust me. I promise I'll treat you well from now on."

Brandon helped catapult Laura to the top, turning himself into the most favored son-in-law of the Colson family. He changed his mind about the marriage and decided he wanted to fully take my place in being her husband. He was determined to thoroughly beat me.Honestly, I had no idea where his obsession with winning came from. When Brandon came home to ask Dad for his betrothal gifts and learned that I'd already gotten 300 million dollars, he was furious."Why does he get that much when I only get 30 million dollars? Dad, you can't play favorites. I'm Laura's golden ticket now!"Dad's expression darkened. "That money was left to him by his mother. A person can't be too greedy, Brandon."Brandon instantly went pale, but he still took the 30 million dollars from Dad. That was probably the last sum he'd ever get to save his own skin.I just smiled without saying anything.…On the wedding day, one invitation from Rosalie was enough to bring in half the upper crust of society to our

That night, I tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep. I finally got up to go downstairs for some water. As I walked past Brandon's room, I heard him ranting angrily inside."System, no matter how I hint at him with the comments, he just won't take the bait! I spent so long scripting those lies, yet they're completely useless!" he hissed."The male lead has most likely awakened his self-awareness. However, you still have a chance now. If you keep working at it, you might be able to turn things around."You can fabricate more comments for him and make him firmly believe that Rosalie Lark is the villainess. Hopefully, everything can still be salvaged. Otherwise, you'll only end up being erased."The moment I heard that, I understood what was going on.A system, huh? It was just one parasite latching onto another parasite.I'd been fooled in my previous life. If not for that, Brandon and his system wouldn't have had such an easy time. In this life, I would cut off every escape rout

I arched a brow. After sending Laura away, Rosalie went off to start preparing for the wedding. Meanwhile, I followed Dad into the study.Dad had long since prepared betrothal gifts for Brandon, knowing that he was about to get married. Since Rosalie and I would be having our wedding soon, I wanted similar treatment. When he heard that I was there to ask him for betrothal gifts, his forehead instantly broke out in sweat. He grabbed my arm and started scolding me. "Looks like you've grown a backbone, Skylar. How can you come to me, demanding betrothal gifts?""Why shouldn't I?" I shot back calmly. "If you don't want to give me anything, I'll just make a public statement that I'm cutting ties with you and the Stone family. You can figure out for yourself what kind of losses that'll cause. At worst, I'll go to Grandpa. I'm sure my uncle will help me out, too."To be honest, I wasn't completely sure this would work. In my previous life, after being severely beaten, I'd gone to Grandpa

I smiled and pulled out a contract, handing it to Dad. "The Moore family has called off the engagement, so Brandon is free to marry Laura. Also, I found the security footage of him stealing my ring from my studio. What do you think the police will do if I make that public? After all, it was my competition piece."If you don't want the entire Stone family to be ripped apart by public outrage, then I think you know what to do."Dad lifted his head and glanced at Brandon, hesitation flashing in his eyes before it hardened into resolve. "Brandon, you should marry Laura."Brandon froze on the spot. Meanwhile, Laura, standing off to the side, stared at me with a hint of disbelief. A moment later, her eyes glinted viciously.I laughed to myself. In this life, I would teach Brandon a precious lesson—he had to reap what he had sown!Helen was dumbfounded when she heard that. "How is that acceptable?""Why is it not? Or did you actually think that with Laura's current reputation, status, a

Phil was still displeased, but I had Rosalie backing me. For the Lark family's sake, he finally relented."I know calling off the engagement between our families puts you in a difficult position. To make up for it, I'll personally take the lead and transfer all downstream logistics contracts to your family. In return, Gwen cannot marry into the Stone family," I said."Don't worry about that. I wouldn't have allowed my daughter to marry a bastard, anyway," Phil harrumphed. In my previous life, because I got together with Laura, Gwen had no choice but to marry Brandon. I still had no idea what tricks Brandon had pulled, but even though Phil looked down on him, he still allowed the marriage. After the marriage, Brandon and Gwen actually had a pretty good life. I was the only one who was miserable. Now, with Phil's reassurance, I was completely at ease. After that, Rosalie accompanied me home. As soon as we arrived at the Stone residence, we saw Laura and her family kicking up a fuss

When I finally got a clear look at Rosalie Lark's face, I relaxed and passed out. When I woke up, I found myself lying on a warm, soft bed. Rosalie had her back to me and was talking to someone on the phone. I was groggy and couldn't make out what she was saying, but I vaguely caught her mentioning the Stone family.I let out a low groan. Rosalie hung up, turned to look at me, and couldn't help smiling. "I guess you have nine lives or something.""Thanks, Ms. Lark," I said."Is a verbal thank-you all I'm gonna get?"I cleared my throat. "You can have full control of the Nanvard project."From the beginning, I'd prepared two backup plans. If Phil agreed to help, then the Nanvard project would've gone to him. If he turned me down, then I would've given it to the Lark family. As long as one of them came to drag me out of this hell, that was good enough.Unsurprisingly, the Moore family had refused. Of course, it wasn't like I'd ever really planned on marrying Gwen anyway. Whether t
