Penulis: Drop the Beep

Chapter 1

Penulis: Drop the Beep
"Look, everyone. I printed your exam admission tickets on pink paper. Isn't it cute?"

Our homeroom teacher, Pauline Ashby, stood at the podium, proudly holding up a stack of pink sheets with both hands. Gasps rippled through the classroom.

"That's so adorable, Ms. Ashby!"

"Pink is so soothing. It already puts me in a better mood."

A few girls in the front row were the first to say something, their eyes sparkling with excitement. The boys didn't say much, but none of them objected either.

Ever since Ms. Ashby got pregnant, she had gone full-on "baby mode", and there was no turning back. The classroom was decorated in pink, the class T-shirts were printed with cartoon characters, and she herself showed up every day looking like she was heading to a preschool recital.

At this point, everyone had gotten used to it.

I looked at the stack of pink admission tickets and felt a wave of nausea churn in my stomach. In my past life, it was this exact pink admission ticket that nearly kept our entire class out of the exam hall.

Even after I tracked down the head teacher to sort things out, we were still delayed by almost 20 minutes before we could get in. Anyone who had ever sat for exams knew exactly what those 20 minutes were worth.

Some people completely fell apart, while others ran out of time before they could finish. The class average ended up nearly 20 points lower than our mock exams.

My childhood best friend and I still got into top universities because we were strong enough students to absorb the hit, but I still remembered that gut-wrenching panic like it was yesterday. Too bad none of them ever thanked me for it. Instead, they all played a part in getting me killed.

I pulled myself out of the memory and made up my mind that in this life, I wasn't going to stick my neck out for anyone. But Ms. Ashby had already set her sights on me.

"Sienna Ellsworth!" she called my name. "Why so quiet? Don't you think the pink looks nice?"

Every pair of eyes in the room turned toward me. My childhood best friend, Caelum Thornley, was staring at me with a particularly unfriendly look.

"It's nice," I said, forcing a lazy smile. "Very cute, Ms. Ashby."

Ms. Ashby nodded, pleased with herself. "See, I knew Sienna had the best taste!"

"Ms. Ashby, I have a question," a hesitant voice called out from the back of the room. It was the academic rep. "Aren't admission tickets supposed to be printed in black and white? Will pink ones even be accepted?"

The classroom went dead silent. Ms. Ashby's face fell. Her lip trembled, and her eyes turned red almost instantly.

Some of the classmates who tore their tickets that day repeated senior year and got into average schools. Others were still working odd jobs to this day. Caelum was the only one among them who got into a top-tier university.A while later, someone shared a screenshot in the class group chat. It was a post from Ms. Ashby on social media. She said she was studying to become a counselor, because "nobody understands what it feels like to be misunderstood better than I do".I scrolled through the comments underneath. Some people reassured her that she did nothing wrong, and others asked if she could ever repay the 38 students whose lives she had derailed.I stared at the post for a long time, smiled to myself, and locked my phone.Time moved quickly. In my senior year, I was accepted into Hartfield's graduate program and stayed on. Caelum graduated from Bowman and took a position at an aerospace research institute down south. I'd catch glimpses of his life on social media every now an

Something twisted in my chest, but I kept my expression still."I don't think the way they classified the incident was fair." Ms. Ashby tucked the envelope back into her bag and spoke slowly, choosing each word with care. "Yes, I printed the tickets in pink. I'll own that. But the person who got the entire class to tear their tickets was Caelum Thornley."She took a step closer. Her voice was low, but every word landed with deliberate weight. "38 students missed the exam, and I shouldn't be the only one held responsible. But every last consequence fell on me."They revoked my license and banned me for life. Meanwhile, the students who led the whole thing didn't even get a warning, especially Caelum." She smiled when she said his name. "I did some digging. He repeated senior year, got into Bowman, and he's doing just fine. How is that fair?""If you're here to settle scores, you should be talking to Caelum, not me." I closed my book. "I didn't report you. I didn't file anything agai

Ms. Ashby had her teaching license permanently revoked and was banned from the profession for life. All 38 students were marked absent and received zeros across the board. Some chose to repeat their senior year. Others had families scraping together every last penny to send them abroad. Caelum chose to repeat the year. His mother came to the school twice to cause a scene. Once to confront the principal, and once to corner me. She was turned away both times, and after Principal Jones called the police on her second visit, they finally backed off.In September, I dragged my suitcase to Hartfield. The campus was enormous, and the leaves on the old oaks were just starting to turn gold. My feet slowed for a moment, then I pulled my gaze away, pushed open the door to my dorm, and set my bags down on the bed by the window. Behind me, my roommates were laughing.College turned out to be much quieter than I had expected. I went to class, ran experiments, wrote papers, and made some new fri

Our exam hall was the most unusual one in the entire building. There were 39 seats, and I was the only one sitting in any of them. Two proctors watched over 38 empty desks, their expressions somewhere between disbelief and pity. When the final bell rang, I set down my pen and let out a long breath. It was over.I walked out of the exam hall, and Principal Jones was standing by the door waiting for me. He saw me come out and gave me a nod. "How did it go?""About what I expected."He was quiet for a moment, his gaze drifting to the building behind him, which had already fallen silent. "39 seats and only one student. I've been a principal for 12 years, and I've never seen anything like it."I didn't respond."Pauline has been taken away." He paused. "When the people from the education board arrived, she was still crying by the fountain, saying she was going to stage a sit-in protest at their office."Her husband drove over from work and told her on the spot that he wanted a divorc

The proctor took my admission ticket and examined the photo and information closely, then ran the security watermark through a scanner. "Everything checks out. You may enter."She stepped aside to clear the way, casting one last cold glance at the bus full of sobbing students behind me. I stepped off the bus, and the silence behind me lasted exactly three seconds before it shattered."How does she have a ticket?""Didn't the principal's batch of tickets all get ruined? Where did she get one?"Caelum was the first to jump off the bus, grabbing me by the wrist. "Sienna, where did you get that ticket?"I shook his hand off, pulled a neatly folded white sheet from my pocket, and unfolded it in front of his face. It was everything hers wasn't.White background, black text, standard print, with a perfectly intact security watermark and the registrar's official red stamp at the bottom. There were no stickers or decorations, and the edges were so clean you could use them as a ruler."It

"You were right there when he said it, and you agreed and said, 'Got it, understood.' Then you turned around and printed them in pink anyway."Ms. Ashby's face cycled between red and white. Caelum saw her floundering and shot me a vicious glare. "Everyone, calm down! The principal is already on his way, remember? He went back to the school to reprint the tickets. He'll be here any minute!""Oh right, the principal went to get them reprinted.""But… Will he make it in time?" someone asked in a small, trembling voice that was close to tears.Caelum clenched his jaw. "He'll make it! You're still allowed into the exam hall up to 15 minutes after it starts. We have time. Don't panic!"He sounded absolutely certain, but he couldn't stop himself from glancing out the window every few seconds. The minutes crawled by. The crowd of parents and well-wishers outside the exam hall gradually thinned out as students from every other school filed inside. A suffocating tension filled the bus.
