"I'm not lying, Mama. I promise."

"Shut up," she snapped suddenly. "Just stop talking."

I pressed my lips together and tried to make myself even smaller so that she wouldn't get even more mad with me..it seemed like she was going to let this matter go and I breathed a lot easier.

We drove in silence for a while, and I tried to focus on the buildings passing by outside instead of the nausea that I felt in my stomach.

Soon, Mama parked the car in front of a fancy store with a sign that said "Silver Creek School Depot." Mama turned off the engine and turned to me with that fake smile again.

"We're here to get your uniform fitted for school tomorrow. You're going to be in the advanced class, just like Ollie. Isn't that exciting?"

I nodded, even though the idea of school made me nervous. I'd never been around other kids my age except for Ollie, and I didn't know how to act around them.
