Chapter 1

"You stupid wolf! Get down from that ship right now! Instead of choosing Oliver, the Beta with a gentle soul, you decided to choose Gilbert, the cold and ruthless Alpha, as your mate! Why, oh why, did I raise such a troublesome daughter like you?"

I heard my mom's voice ringing out from behind me. For a moment, I almost spun on my heel to look at her. But in the end, I held back my urge.

When I recalled the tragic outcomes both my cousin, Clara Evonfall, and I had faced, I told myself that I had made the right decision.

In my previous life, Clara had married Gilbert. But thanks to Gilbert's childhood sweetheart, Joanna Penning, who kept interfering with their marriage, Clara had remained a virgin for the rest of her life.

To think that such a gentle she-wolf had her life ruined by Gilbert just like that…

Right after I got reborn, I saw Clara sitting on the bed with a glum expression. Obviously, she was depressed about the fact that she'd be marrying the cold Gilbert soon. Hence, I packed up my luggage immediately so that I could fulfill the bonding pact in her stead.

"Clara, I'll become Alpha Gilbert's Luna. Even though Oliver has a bad reputation, his temperament is pretty decent. You two should be able to click well with each other."

Tears pooled in Clara's eyes at that moment.

"Alyssa, Alpha Gilbert is a difficult man to get along with. His childhood sweetheart is another nightmare to deal with. I can't let you shoulder the tragic burden that's mine to bear."

I just smiled at her. It was a bright and bold smile, though one could describe it as an idiotic smile, too.

"Clara, since the bonding pact is meant for our family, that means it's up for grabs for anyone bearing our family name. Back when the packs drafted the bonding pact, they never specified which daughter had to marry Alpha Gilbert at all.

"As for me, I'm no weak she-wolf. I'm currently training to become a Gamma warrior. If Alpha Gilbert wants to bully me, I'll kick his ass!"

As I spoke, I raised my fist and waved it at Clara.

The sight of my energetic display made Clara smile through her tears. "Alright. I'll swap mates with you."

Honestly speaking, I wasn't sure if my choice was correct. But one thing was for sure—I definitely didn't want my life to turn out like the one I had gone through in my previous life.

In my previous life, I could never get along with Oliver. I disliked him for being a smooth-talking bastard, while he despised me for not being feminine enough. Our days were filled with nothing but arguments. In less than a year, we severed our mate bond.

That was why Clara might as well become Oliver's mate after we got reborn. After all, Oliver was still a rich Beta at the end of the day. He could give Clara a comfortable and lavish life.

This was a lot better than Clara's fate from her previous life. When she was Gilbert's mate, Joanna had usurped her control over the family's finances. Every month, Clara was given only 100 dollars as her allowance. In the end, she died from depression.

To me, my plan was absolutely flawless. But after spending ten hours in a rocky ship where the sea seemed to stretch on endlessly, I could no longer feel smug about my plan.

I thought I could reach my destination after a night's fitful sleep, but I never would've thought that I'd get seasick during the journey.

When the ship finally docked at the harbor of the Bloodthorn pack's borders, I was overwhelmed with so much nausea that I could barely breathe. Even so, I told myself that this was my fate.

It was better for me to travel to the Bloodthorn pack than for Clara to go. With how fragile her health was, she wouldn't be able to tough out the difficult journey.

I straightened my back, my heart pounding in my chest. After all, I could see Gilbert, my future mate, through the thorny barrier of the Bloodthorn pack's borders. He stood in the morning mist, his tall and well-built physique brimming with danger and power.

My gaze lingered on him longer than I expected. I told myself that I was merely curious about him and nothing else.

At that moment, a shrill and sickly sweet voice boomed next to me.

"Alpha Gilbert, what is a country bumpkin dressed like a homeless she-wolf doing here?"

After the mountain flood and the landslide finally passed, the entire forest was left in shambles. The search-and-rescue team soon located us.Rocks had landed on Gilbert's back multiple times, leaving him with grievous injuries. He had fainted on the spot once the danger passed. As for me, I only sustained some minor injuries thanks to him shielding me protectively from the danger. Everyone in the red and blue teams was safely rescued thanks to the arrival of the other search-and-rescue teams. Because of my outstanding performance and leadership shown during the disaster, I passed the final exam and officially became a Gamma warrior. The weather was bright and sunny on the day the award ceremony was hosted. I wore my brand-new uniform, and my shoulder bore the medal that represented honor. All in all, I looked absolutely dashing and valiant. The pack elder personally bestowed my rank upon me. He looked at me, his eyes filled with approval."Alyssa, you've proven yourself to ever

Despite my rejection, Gilbert never gave up. He poured all of his obsession into winning me back. He no longer stopped me from pursuing my dream. Instead, he changed his tactic in an attempt to integrate into my life by using his authority as the Alpha to become the chief examiner of my batch's final exam. The final exam was set to be a three-day wilderness survival combat exercise. All the recruits were split into two teams—red and blue. We were to fight each other in a specified area of the forest. In order to win, our team had to either steal the opposing team's flag successfully or take out our enemy team in combat.I was placed in the blue team. On top of that, I was even nominated as the team captain. After the combat exercise started, I led the blue team to a string of decisive victories by relying on my sharp terrain awareness and decisive tactical command. Soon, we were able to figure out the general position of the red team's main force. But when we were about to launc

The Gamma warriors' training was a lot more brutal than I thought.Every day, I had to get up before the crack of dawn and go through extreme physical training, close combat training, and wilderness survival courses. Each course was set to challenge the limits of my body. Many new recruits in my batch ended up withdrawing from the training, seeing as they couldn't handle the difficulty of the training at all. But I, on the other hand, just gritted my teeth and continued to hold on.Whenever I felt that I couldn't endure the brutality of this training any longer, I'd recall how cold the sea and Gilbert's gaze were. The humiliation and resentment bubbling in the pit of my stomach were soon converted into endless motivation for me to keep going.I no longer paid attention to any news regarding Gilbert and Joanna. Training was the only thing that completely took up my life.Sweat soaked through my shirt. Injuries and pain filled my body time and again. But at the same time, I had neve

When I regained my consciousness, I found myself lying on a sick bed in the infirmary of the Bloodthorn pack. Bright sunlight poured through the window, as though yesterday's nightmare never happened to me.To my surprise, both my mother and Clara were actually sitting by my bed. When they saw me stirring awake, Mom berated me with red-rimmed eyes right away."You fool! You almost gave me a heart attack! Thank goodness Clara and I came over right away to look for you the moment I heard that Alpha Gilbert forced you to go through etiquette lessons! Otherwise, you'd have died!"Clara held my hand as well, her tears streaming down her cheeks."This is all my fault, Alyssa. If it weren't for me, you'd never have gone through this suffering. We're going home right now. Let's just forget about the bonding pact and the Alpha!"Warmth surged into my heart when I saw how worried Mom and Clara were.Right… I still had my family with me. I wasn't alone at all."Mom, Clara, I'm fine," I s

The second bonding ceremony was set to take place in Lunar Sanctum, which was located in the heart of the Bloodthorn pack.Clad in the ballgown-like wedding dress Gilbert had personally picked out for me, I slowly walked toward the sanctum while being flanked by the maids. To the outsiders, this might seem like a grand and fancy ceremony. But to me, this was just a gilded cage.I walked toward Gilbert, my expression stony. Deep down, I was plotting how to escape from this place.Suddenly, an anxious shout shattered the solemn atmosphere of the bonding ceremony."Oh no! Alpha Gilbert!" A guard rushed toward Gilbert anxiously. "Ms. Penning has gone missing after leaving a letter behind!"Gilbert's expression darkened instantly. He snatched the letter out of the guard's hands. It contained only a short paragraph."Alpha Gilbert, I know that Luna Alyssa can never tolerate my presence. In order not to cause you any trouble, I have decided to take my own life in a deserted place. T

Joanna shrieked, "What the hell do you think you're doing?"The atmosphere became eerily silent. Everyone stared at me in shock and disbelief. I could sense the reproach in their gazes. They must have thought of me as a lunatic who did whatever she wanted.Go ahead and watch the chaos, then. How dare Joanna and Gilbert humiliate me at my bonding ceremony! I wasn't Clara—she could endure being humiliated, whereas I would never tolerate that.I merely raised my chin calmly at Joanna. "Are you angry at me? Judging from how close you two were when you were chatting earlier, I thought you had replaced me as the bride. Since you're that eager to wear the Luna's veil, I'll just give it to you. You should be thanking me, you know."Joanna's cheeks went bright red at my words. An idea popped into her head, though, prompting her to turn to Gilbert and speak in a pretentious tone."Just look at her, Alpha Gilbert! I was just envious that she got to be with a husband as amazing as you, so I
