Chapter 11

My head was hammering so hard it felt like someone had taken a sledgehammer to my skull.

What happened?

Slowly, I cracked my eyes open. I was in an unfamiliar room, surrounded by opulent gold accents and high-end decor that practically screamed money.

As I gently pushed myself up, I met a pair of deep, ocean-blue eyes staring back at me.

"Julian?"

"Thank God you're okay," he breathed, letting out a heavy sigh of relief. "I've been worried sick about you. Here, drink this.

Chapter 34i stopped walking, thumb already on the screen. I read it twice before it landed. That was enough. I shoved the phone in my bag and covered the last stretch to the car faster than I meant to. "The keys," I said, hand already out. "But — ma'am, I would be driving—" "The keys." He handed them over so quick he nearly dropped them, stepping back to give me room. I got in, started the engine, and pulled into traffic. I called Daniel before I'd even cleared the block. "Daniel," I said the second he picked up. "Ma'am, I was just about to—" "Send me everything, right now to my email." "Everything? The files, the transfers, the—" "All of it," I cut in. "Reports, emails, account logs. The messy ones too. I need it before I walk into that building." I didn't wait for an answer. I Hung up and drove. By the time I got to the building, Lucas wasn't taking up any space in my head anymore. There wasn't room. I walked past the valet without a word and got in the elevator, igno

Chapter 33Lucas stayed still. "You think a piece of paper is going to rid you of me? You think running straight to Julian is going to get you the Hales' company?"I kept my back to him a moment longer, letting the silence do the work, then turned slowly, one hand resting on my hip, my face arranged into the exact shade of boredom he deserved."Julian is a snake, Elena," he said, his eyes locked onto mine. "If you file those divorce papers tomorrow, I'll tie those assets up in court for the next five years. Don't do it. Give me three months. I'll voluntarily hand over whatever you want. Just stay away from Julian."I walked back toward the bed, my heels striking the floor like a countdown, until I was looming right over him, close enough to smell the antiseptic still clinging to his skin."You really don't get it, do you?""You think you're in a position to bargain, Lucas? Look at you." I let my eyes drag over the gown, the IV line, the bruising along his jaw. "You're bleeding out in

Chapter 32 I left the terrace and walked straight back into the hospital hallway. Mr, Edelman’s voice was still ringing in my ears: I’ll handle the ugly parts. The hell he would. I’d only let the old man talk to test him, and a few fake compliments had clearly gone to his head. Did he really think I couldn't handle my own mess? The hallway outside Ward 402 was dead quiet. only two heavy security guards stood by the door—the same ones who had just dragged Victoria away kicking and screaming minutes ago. Her expensive silk scarf was still lying forgotten on the linoleum floor where she’d dropped it during the struggle. I stepped right over it without slowing down and pushed the heavy door open. *** Through the glass window of VIP Ward 402, the heart monitor chimed with a steady, lonely rhythm. Lucas was awake, propped up on pillows, bandaged and hooked to IV lines. Even looking weak, he still had that annoying, arrogant posture—not like a dying man, but like a problem that refus

Chapter 31Victoria's face was red with rage, her hair a mess for the first time in her life. She looked like she hadn't slept in three days like she’d crawled through the literal fires of hell just to get to this room. And she was looking at me like she wanted to tear the flesh right off my bones."My hate for you has tripled, Elena," she said, her voice trembling, laced with a terrifying, unhinged fury. "You think you won? You think taking my board seat and parading around with my son's rival makes you untouchable?"She slammed the door behind her. The crack of wood against the frame echoed down the sterile hallway like a gunshot. In the hospital bed behind me, Julian winced, fighting the IV lines to sit up. "Get out—""Shut up!" she snapped, swinging her gaze toward him like a weapon. "You're pathetic. Both of you."She thrust a heavy stack of papers straight at my chest. "Sign them."I didn't reach for them. "What papers?""Divorce," she spat, every syllable laced with poison. "Yo

Chapter 30 My fingers went numb around the phone. "Oops," Celine said, a soft laugh trailing the word. "That was a joke, by the way. Though I do hope he actually dies." "What do you want, Celine," I said. "After two failed attempts on my life, what's this one about?" She hummed, like I'd told her something funny. "I want the same thing I've always wanted. You, on your knees." "Was it you?" I asked. "The forty-seven million? Theft's your hobby these days .... figured I'd check." She made a small, disappointed sound. "I wish I could take credit. Thirty-eight seconds, three shell corps, a clean exit — that's art. I'm almost flattered you think that highly of me." "But no, bitch This isn't over. Not even close." Her voice dropped to a whisper. "Lucas is mine now and Forever." The line went dead. I stared at the dark screen. What a waste of a phone call. "Ma'am," the driver said quietly. "The hospital?" My mind had already gone to Lucas. Still unconscious, probably, still tangl
