[Selena's POV]

The courier didn't wait for a reply, I could tell from the rushed handwriting that Elena had written it in a hurry.

I read it twice standing in the doorway of my own tent, once fast to catch the shape of it,once slowly to make sure I’d read it correctly. Three lines, no signature, the same plain code we'd used since the gallery. The Accord Renewal ceremony, fixed for three days from now. Neutral ground. Luna's attendance required no exceptions the South Pack would tolerate.

[Eileen's POV]The first thing I did was reach for my stomach. My wrists caught on the chain before my hands got there, the iron chain rubbing against my raw skin without knowing I had. Cold stone under me. Cold air everywhere else. I twisted my hands as far as the chain allowed and pressed my palms flat against myself anyway,I waited until I felt her move that meant she was still there, still fighting even if I currently couldn't.Only then did I let myself breathe. The drug still made my head heavy, thick and slow behind my eyes then I remembered what happened. The treeline. The sack over my head. Alaric's voice, closer and then farther, calling my name until I could no longer hear him.I'd screamed his name back until someone's hand crushed it out of my mouth, and I didn't know, lying here now on stone that smelled of old rain and rust, whether he'd heard the last of it or only the silence after. He was coming. I had to believe, even without proof.I pushed myself upright against

[Alaric's POV]"Where is she?" I was already moving before the guard finished catching his breath, shoving past two South Pack dignitaries who didn't matter anymore, hadn’t mattered since the moment her voice disappeared into the trees. "WHERE IS SHE.""We lost them past the ridge, my lord. They had horses waiting, we didn't. We're still searching, but...""But what."The guard didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to. I was already past him, boots tearing up ground I'd walked an hour ago beside a woman laughing at me for checking that same treeline too many times. Torn fabric caught on a low branch, the same deep green she'd worn that morning while arguing with me about garden access like the worst thing either of us had to worry about was four guards and forty paces of lawn.Blood on a rock, not much, but enough. A cloth on the ground, damp still, sickly sweet even from a distance."That's what they used to put her under." One of my trackers crouched beside it without touching

[Eileen's POV]"You've checked that treeline four times since we sat down." I kept my voice low, my smile fixed for the South Pack delegation still filing into their seats across the field. "Nobody's going to leap out of the woods during the gift exchange, Alaric.""Humor me.""I always do. That's practically our whole marriage at this point."That earned the barest twitch at the corner of his mouth, which was the most I’d gotten out of him since we’d left the palace.” The ceremony field stretched wide and green under a sky too clear for how tense his shoulders were, banners from both packs snapping overhead, the South Pack envoy already bowing his way through the opening formalities like a man who'd rehearsed it a hundred times. Guards ringed the field at a respectful distance, more of them than tradition strictly called for, all of them Alaric's, and I counted at least six without meaning to before I made myself stop."See," I murmured, as the envoy finished his bow without incident

Three lines, no signature, the same plain code we'd used since the gallery. The Accord Renewal ceremony, fixed for three days from now. Neutral ground. Luna's attendance required no exceptions the South Pack would tolerate.I folded the letter and went to find my brother before I'd let myself feel anything about it beyond what the letter meant for us.Lucian was exactly where he always was at this hour, bent over the map table in the command tent, a knife in one hand he wasn't using for anything but tracing borders he already had memorized. He didn't look up when I came in."You look like a woman with good news.""I have exactly that." I set the letter flat on the table, over the section of map showing the treaty ground

[Eileen's POV]"I am walking to the herb garden, not marching into battle." I kept my tone even, mostly for Wren's benefit, since she was the one standing closest to me and therefore the one most likely to catch the brunt of it if I stopped trying. "It's forty paces from that door.""Four guards minimum past the east wing, my lady. Alpha's orders." The guard didn't budge, didn't even have the decency to look uncomfortable about it."I helped draft half the trade policy this kingdom runs on. I think I can survive forty paces of open lawn.""I don't doubt it, my lady. The order stands regardless.""I could go to the garden anyway. What exactly is he going to do, lock me in my own chambers?""He might, my lady.""He wouldn't dare."The guard had the good sense to at least look apologetic about it. "I was told to say, if you pushed the point, that he would in fact dare."Wren pressed her lips together, fighting a smile she clearly thought I couldn't see, which only made it worse. "You cou

[Kade's POV]"You've checked that same ridge three times in the last mile." Lumi didn't look over at me when she said it, her eyes fixed on the road ahead, but I heard the edge in her voice."Just being careful.""You've been careful since we left the gate. This is something else."Hollis rode a length ahead of us. Close enough to hear if I raised my voice. Far enough to let me pretend, if I wanted to, that this conversation was private. I wanted to. Lumi clearly didn't."It's quiet out here," I said. "That's all.""It's the middle of a trade road at sunrise. It should be quiet.""No merchants. No pilgrims heading for the shrine at Dellow. Nothing." I scanned the treeline again, the habit stronger than my will to stop doing it. "This road's usually busier than this by now.""Your hand's been resting on your knife hilt for the last mile too. You think I haven't noticed that as well?""Old habit.""It's not an old habit. It's a new one, and it started this morning." Lumi pulled her hors
