CHAPTER 8: Not the Woman They Remember

[Eileen’s POV]

I didn’t sleep again. Somewhere between the note and the footsteps outside my door, sleep had stopped being worth chasing.

Wren found me still dressed when she came in with the morning tea, the parchment already gone, tucked deep inside a drawer where no one but me would think to look.

“You look terrible,” she said, then winced. “My Luna.”

“Rough night.”

“Something happen?”

“Something like that.”

She didn’t push. She never did, not with me, and I was starting to understand that was rare in this palace.

“There’s a household audience this morning,” she said instead, setting the tray down. “Petitions, disputes, that sort of thing. Madam Ferra says you’re expected to sit in.”

“Since when do Lunas sit in on petitions?”

“Since always.” A pause. “The last one just never bothered.”

I wondered, briefly, how many things “the last one” simply hadn’t bothered with. The list was starting to feel long enough to fill a book.

The household hall was smaller than the banquet hall, plainer, built for work instead of show. Long benches lined either wall, servants and stewards seated by rank, waiting their turn to be heard.

I sat where Madam Ferra positioned me, a high backed chair beside an empty one that should have belonged to Alaric. He was already gone before dawn, called away by border reports again.

The first two matters passed quickly. A dispute over grain storage. A complaint about a broken cart wheel.

Then the steward called a name that made Wren, standing just behind my chair, go completely still. I felt it before I saw it. Her whole body went rigid.

“Nessa of the stables.”

A girl no older than sixteen limped forward, favoring one leg, eyes fixed on the floor.

The steward read from a ledger without looking up. “Treated by the palace healer for a broken leg, without prior authorization from this household. Per custom, the family owes double the healer’s f*e, to be worked off in service or paid in coin within the season.”

“She’s my sister,” Wren said under her breath, barely loud enough for me to hear. “She couldn’t walk. I didn’t think it through. I just asked the healer myself.”

I looked at the girl. She was still standing, weight on one leg, waiting to find out how much of her life this would cost.

“What happens if the debt isn’t paid?” I asked.

The steward blinked, surprised I’d spoken at all. “Indenture, my Luna. Three years, typically, in whichever household needs the labor most.”

Three years. For asking someone to set a broken bone.

Elena, seated near the front with the ease of someone who came to these often, didn’t bother hiding her smile.

“A shame,” she said lightly. “But the law is the law. Even a new Luna can’t simply wish debts away.”

She said it like a test, because it was one.

I thought about the West Pack ledgers I used to sort through with my father as a girl, back before any of this, back when I was still just Mallory and debts were the most interesting thing in my life. There had been a clause. I was almost certain there had been a clause.

Almost.

“Actually,” I said, “she can.”

The room went quiet. I was fairly sure the mistake about to be made was mine.

“Under the Widow’s Clause,” I continued, keeping my voice even, “any Luna may forgive a household debt incurred through injury or illness, provided it was incurred in good faith and not through negligence.”

Elena’s smile faltered. “That’s West Pack law.”

“It’s Old Accord law,” I said. “Every pack signed it. West just still enforces it.”

I had no idea if that last part was true. I said it like I did.

The steward flipped back through several pages, frowning, searching. Beside him, an elderly council member I recognized from the feast the night before leaned over to check the same page.

He looked up first.

“She’s… correct,” he said, sounding almost offended by it. “Clause eleven. Rarely invoked. Never revoked.”

A murmur went through the hall.

Elena’s jaw tightened just enough for me to notice.

“How convenient,” she said, “that you happen to know an obscure clause no one’s cited in years.”

“How convenient,” I said, “that you didn’t check before you challenged me.”

I didn’t wait for her to answer. I looked at Nessa instead, still frozen like she hadn’t understood yet that it was over.

“The debt is forgiven,” I said. “Go see the healer again if that leg still isn’t right.”

The girl’s mouth opened, closed, opened again. She managed a shaking bow instead of words and hurried out before anyone could change their mind.

Behind my chair, I heard Wren let out a breath she’d been holding the entire time.

I didn’t turn around. I didn’t need to.

Something had shifted back there, quiet and complete. It didn’t need saying out loud to be real.

The audience ended an hour later. Elena left without another word to me, which told me more than anything she could have said out loud.

Wren caught up with me in the corridor after, matching my pace without being asked.

“Thank you,” she said. “I know that wasn’t nothing, standing up there and saying that.”

“It was one clause.”

“It was my sister.”

I stopped walking. “Then it wasn’t nothing to me either.”

She didn’t say anything else. She didn’t have to. Whatever careful distance she’d kept since my wedding night had closed, just like that, over one girl’s broken leg and a law I’d half remembered from a life that technically didn’t exist anymore.

I was still thinking about that when Madam Ferra’s voice cut through the corridor behind us.

“Miss Hayden. A word.”

Wren excused herself without needing to be told twice. Madam Ferra waited until she was gone, then pulled me into an alcove off the main hall, out of earshot of anyone passing.

“That was well done,” she said, though her tone didn’t match the compliment. Tight. Careful. “Better than well done. Almost too well done.”

“Is that a problem?”

“It’s a warning.” She glanced once toward the corridor, then back at me. “You handled a household debt today like you’ve spent your whole life reading ledgers. Which makes me wonder how closely you’ve read your own.”

My stomach went cold before she said another word.

“What are you talking about?”

Madam Ferra’s face didn’t soften. If anything, it hardened further, like she was bracing herself as much as she was bracing me.

She stepped closer, close enough that I could see her hands trembling slightly at her sides. In all the years I’d apparently known this body, Madam Ferra had never once looked frightened.

She looked frightened now.

“Before your wedding,” she said, “you signed something. Not a dowry. Everyone assumed it was a dowry, myself included, until I finally saw the paper for what it was three days ago.”

She lowered her voice even further.

“It’s a debt, girl. A blood debt, older than you, and it isn’t owed to your father anymore.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“It’s owed to you now. And whoever holds the other half of that signature is going to come collecting.”

My hands had gone cold. I pressed them flat against my skirt to keep them from shaking.

“Who?”

Madam Ferra’s eyes flicked toward the corridor, toward the far doors, like she expected someone to be listening even here.

“I don’t know,” she said. “I only know they gave you until the next full moon.”

She left me standing there before I could ask anything else.

The next full moon was five days away.

Five days to find a debt I didn’t remember owing, to a person I couldn’t name, for a price Madam Ferra clearly believed might cost me everything.

[Kade's POV]I found Alaric on the east wall an hour before dawn, Aurora asleep against his chest in a sling Wren had rigged for him. The sky was beginning to lighten."You're supposed to be sleeping right now," I said, climbing up beside him."So are you.""I couldn't. Too much in my head." I leaned against the stone, watching the last of the torches go out below us. "You?""Same. She won't settle unless I'm holding her, and Eileen finally got a real, full night's sleep after weeks without one. I wasn't about to wake her over it.""You look terrible, by the way, in case nobody's mentioned it yet tonight.""Thank you.""I mean it fondly." I bumped his shoulder with mine, careful of the baby between us. "This is the first quiet hour we've had together since I came home. I wanted to actually use it.""Use it how?""I don't know yet. Just talk, maybe. Do you remember the last time we stood on a wall like this, just the two of us, nothing burning down around us?"He thought about it, and

[Lumi's POV]My stomach turned the second the music started swelling again inside the hall behind us, and I barely made it past the side doors before I had to stop, one hand braced against the cool stone, breathing through it the way Wren had shown me two days earlier."Lumi." Kade's hand found my back, gentle, worried in the particular way he got whenever he thought something was wrong and hadn't figured out what yet. "You've gone pale again. Is it the crowd? We can go back to our rooms, nobody would think twice about it tonight.""It's not the crowd.""Then what. You've been doing this for days now, going quiet and disappearing to corners at every gathering, and I've been telling myself not to hover, but I'm done not hovering, Lumi. Talk to me, please."I'd meant to wait. I'd told myself all week I'd find some perfect, quiet moment, somewhere far from ceremonies and crowns and everyone else's enormous news, somewhere that belonged only to us. Standing there in the cool night air wit

[Eileen's POV]I found my father in the garden an hour after the hall emptied, sitting alone on the same low wall where Alaric had found me days earlier, Aurora’s circlet still on my head, I crossed the grass toward him."You slipped away before I had the chance to find you," I said."I needed air. Crowded rooms have always been difficult for me faster than they should be for a man my age." He looked up, and even in the dark I could see his eyes were still red. "Forgive me. I wasn't expecting to feel it quite that hard.""Feel what?""Watching you up there." He shook his head slowly, still struggling to put it into words. "I've watched a great many ceremonies in my life, Eileen. Weddings. Namings. Coronations of alphas twice your age with half your reasons for standing where they stood. I have never once felt what I felt tonight.""You already apologized to me, Father. In the war room, in front of everyone. I remember every word of it.""I know. That apology was true, and it was neces

[Eileen's POV]"You look terrified again," Alaric said, straightening the deep blue fabric at my shoulders. "I don't know what I'm walking into. You wouldn't tell me.""I wanted you to hear it the same way everyone else does. Not rehearsed. Not softened." He tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear."Trust me for one more hour.""I trust you. I just don't trust surprises anymore. The last several have all involved people trying to kill me.""This one won't.""That's not exactly reassuring on its own, Alaric. You could at least give me a single word to hold onto while I stand there wondering.""One word would ruin it entirely." He smiled, and I knew arguing with him wasn’t going to change anything. "You'll understand the second I say it. I promise."I smoothed the front of my dress, hands unsteady despite myself, and let him lead me toward the great doors waiting at the end of the corridor. The great hall was even more crowded than it had been on the naming day, every bench and stan

[Eileen's POV]“You’re allowed to be nervous,” Wren said, adjusting Aurora’s blanket before the doors opened." Every mother gets nervous before something like this.”"I don't remember being this nervous facing Lucian.""Lucian wasn’t asking you to hold your newborn in front of the entire court. And yes, your hands might shake. That’s fine." Wren smoothed a strand of hair back from my face.”They might shake. That’s fine.”"What if I say something wrong? The whole ceremony, the words, I've only heard them described once, and half of that description came from Kade, who forgets half of everything he's told.""Then you'll say something wrong, and the North Pack will still love her exactly as much as they would have otherwise. Nobody's judging you on ceremony, Eileen. They're here to see her." Wren straightened Aurora's tiny blanket one last time, unnecessary but soothing all the same. “You’ve faced worse than this. And this time, you’re not alone.”Alaric found my free hand and laced his

[Alaric's POV]I’ve stood on battlefields and watched men die without my hands shaking like they were now. The silence in this room was worse than any battlefield."Wren." My own voice sounded like it belonged to someone else. "Do something.""I am doing something. Let me work."She cleared our daughter's mouth with one careful finger, tilted her, rubbed harder along her tiny back, murmuring something too low for either of us to catch. Eileen had gone rigid against the pillows, both hands pressed to her own mouth like she could hold the fear in through sheer pressure alone."Wren, please." The word came out of Eileen thin and broken. "Please, do something.""I know. I know, Eileen. Give her one more second."The seconds stretched on, I counted them without meaning to, the way I used to count breaths before a fight. Anything to keep myself calm. Then, finally, a sound. Small at first, more of a hiccup than a cry, and then building into something furious and full-throated."There she is
