Chapter 2

Thinking back about how tragic my death was in my past life, I shuddered uncontrollably.

Since the Moon Goddess had decided to give me another chance, I was determined to change my fate.

I ignored the aggrieved-looking Sienna and doubtful Marcus. I merely continued picking up the luggage bag and continued packing.

My calmness unsettled Marcus. He grabbed my arm, forcing me to stop. "Lorelei, if you really don't want me to go, don't pretend to be so understanding while you're actually throwing a tantrum.

"You're acting as if we're forcing you to do this. This isn't what a reasonable Luna-to-be would do.

"Why did you throw the luggage on the floor in front of Sienna? She got frightened because of you. If you continue to be so childish, we can't proceed with our marriage. Apologize to Sienna at once!"

Marcus was always like this—using all these rules and regulations to make me behave like the 'perfect' Luna, or shower me with flattery and sweet talk, all just so he could get me to do things his way.

I secretly chuckled bitterly. I wondered if this was how one was supposed to act when one loved someone.

In the past, I would surely angrily question Marcus if he loved me or not, or why he would never stand by my side. I would even use the pup in me to threaten him.

At that moment, I was not going to do that anymore. My love for him was gone on the day he killed me in my past life. It was irrevocable.

"We can't proceed with our marriage?" I repeated what he said. "Sure. Let's not get married then."

Pin-drop silence hung thick in the air.

I looked at the bewildered Marcus and enunciated, "Marcus, I don't want to marry you anymore."

Marcus and I grew up together. I was the daughter of the Moonfang pack's Alpha, while Marcus belonged to the Shadowhowl pack.

Both of our packs had agreed to a marriage of convenience for us since we were young. Everything was going smoothly, but half a year ago, Marcus suddenly had a new assistant, Sienna.

The first time I met Sienna was in Marcus's office. I was there, bringing Marcus the lunch I had specially made for him, when I bumped into him giving Sienna a scolding.

Sienna did not have much work experience back then, and she had made a mistake. She was cowering in fear when being yelled at.

She was also silently crying. Anyone who witnessed this would feel sorry for her. The others tried to persuade Marcus to calm down, but he was still in a foul mood.

In the end, I was the one who pleaded on Sienna's behalf. Marcus finally let Sienna, who had been constantly apologizing, go.

He rubbed his temples and complained to me about how he could not imagine how he could have such a troublemaker working for him. He said he was going to fire her in the next few days.

Little did anyone know that Marcus not only did not fire Sienna, but he also started caring for her. He had given her all of his time and concern.

He even killed his own pup because of Sienna in the past life. He had used silver. Something only used for criminals and traitors.

How much must my pup have suffered when my pup had been killed with silver?

Every time I think about it, a sharp pain tears through my heart all over again…

"Lorelei, you don’t mean that! You can’t!" Marcus wanted to see me get jealous or throw a tantrum, but what he got was only unwavering determination.

He suddenly panicked a little and reached his hand out, trying to touch my face.

At that moment, Sienna suddenly burst into a sob, "Please don't fight because of me! If Lorelei doesn't want to see me, I'll leave right away! I'll go as far away as possible forever!"

She ran off.

Marcus looked worried. He actually believed Sienna’s pathetic act. He looked at me reproachfully, thinking that this was part of my tactic to kick Sienna out.

"Lorelei, why must you be so cruel to hurt such a pure and innocent lady? I'm disappointed in you! If you still want our marriage to go on, you'll apologize to Sienna and make it up to her! If not, I will never marry such a vicious and cruel lady!

"Even if you don't care about yourself, you should care about the pup in you. You better think about this, Lorelei."

Then, he ran after Sienna.

I looked around at the empty room, and tears fell uncontrollably.

This is the man I gave my heart to—a man who’d rather blame me than upset another woman.

He was so confident that I was still under his control, but he had forgotten that even if I was with pup, I could still get an abortion.

As for the marriage, it would not be easy to call it off, since it was a marriage of convenience between two packs. However, Marcus was not only the heir to the Shadowhowl pack.

I still felt the ache, but I buried it deep.

Eight years of love, two lifetimes of entanglement — it had to end.

As I sat there, sinking into grief I couldn’t climb out of, a message alert broke the silence.

I picked up my phone. It was from Sienna.

[So what if you're the daughter of the Moonfang pack's Alpha, Lorelei? I will make Marcus choose me over and over again!]

[Must be tough spending Christmas alone, right? Don't worry. You'll soon get used to this loneliness and despair. Marcus will forever choose to be with me. Wait and see. I'm the future Luna.]

Every word was filled with provocation. I had received many such messages from Sienna. I even showed them to Marcus before.

Every time, all he said was, "Sienna just admires me too much. I'll ask her to watch her tone of messages, but Lorelei, you should be understanding, too. She's still young. She doesn't understand all these."

Initially, I craved for Marcus's protection. Slowly, I started to get numb and ignored all those messages.

Marcus and I were not like this in the past. Marcus once held my hand and said that having me as his betrothed—even in a political marriage—was the greatest blessing of his life. He had once rushed to my house in the middle of the night under a huge storm, all because I said I was a little sad.

But now, he can’t hear my sadness anymore. He would even suggest things like putting our marriage on hold.

At that thought, I took a deep breath and swallowed all my sorrows. I started typing something on my phone.

Christmas was the day when the two packs were going to announce the marriage. I thought I’d have a special ‘gift’ ready for Marcus—one he wouldn’t forget.

Though it broke my heart, if Marcus truly didn’t want to marry me, I would let him go.

It was he who had gradually extinguished the love I once felt for him.
