Chapter 10

작가: Empty Space
“I’m hungry. I’m going to get something to eat.”

I kept walking toward a small diner nearby.

Their hotdog bun was just two dollars, and the grilled chicken with vegetables was three. They were my favorite dishes.

Normally, I’d pick one and stretch it out over a meal.

But today, I decided to splurge and ordered both.

Just as I started eating, Shane walked in. The strong aroma hit him hard, making him cough uncontrollably. He covered his mouth and nose before sitting down beside me.

“You’re eating this?”

He looked shocked.

I nodded. “It’s good.”

He frowned deeply, speechless for a moment.

After a sigh, he said, “Leila’s life abroad is miles better than yours. Her monthly allowance is over forty thousand dollars. From what I hear, she’s partying every day.”

I kept eating my hotdog bun, clearly unbothered.

Seeing that I didn’t respond, Shane suddenly pulled out a card and handed it to me.

“You’re the top scorer in the city. That’s a big deal. As your brother, I’ll re

When my mom answered my call, her voice trembled with emotion. “Carol, you finally called me! It’s been so many years since you’ve come home. How have you been? I heard you started a company—is it tiring…” I cut her off. “You should come pick up your daughter. She’s at the Kentridge Police Station.” “What?” I briefly explained the situation and was about to hang up when my mom burst into sobs. “Carol, you’re my real daughter. We’ve already disowned Leila. I don’t want to bring her back—I want to bring you home. Please, would you come home?”No, I wouldn’t.I was too busy. “No.” …By the time I was named one of the Capital’s Top Ten Outstanding Young Entrepreneurs, the year was drawing to a close. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows in the CEO’s office, kicked off my heels, and picked up a glass of red wine. I sipped it quietly, gazing at the glittering city lights outside. I was thirty years old. It took me fifteen years to get here—from fifteen to thirty. The jou

I merely responded with a neutral "Oh," and said I was just passing by to take a quick look before heading off.My mom panicked, gripping my hand tightly. "What’s the rush? You haven’t even seen your dad yet. Do you know he wasn’t just ill? He was attacked!"I raised an eyebrow. "Who would dare attack him?""Leila!" My mom spat through gritted teeth. "That ungrateful wretch teamed up with our competitors to try to steal confidential files. Your dad caught her red-handed."And do you know what she did? She shamelessly beat him up on the spot and stabbed him in the shoulder with a fruit knife!"That was bold.I almost laughed but instead asked calmly, "Did you call the police? Leila should be in jail by now."My mom shook her head. "We decided to handle this ourselves. Leila is no longer part of this family. She’s dead to us!"“Is that so? Well, go ahead and handle it then,” I thought.Noticing the time, I decided to leave. My mom chased after me, begging me to stay for dinner. She assu

“Yes!” my dad replied firmly. “Great,” I said, my gaze unwavering. “I’ll leave for abroad right now. Please help me with the paperwork, and while you’re at it, let Leila know to pick me up.” My dad froze again, stumbling over his words. “That… might not be ideal. Maybe we should discuss it with Leila first? Wait until she wakes up…” I smiled, picked up my suitcase, and waved goodbye. No one followed me. The two of them just stood there, ashamed and helpless, watching me walk away. …After enrolling at Crownridge University, I worked harder than ever. I wanted to become a strong, independent woman standing at the top of the world, not the desperate heiress I used to be. In my second year, Shane came to the capital to meet a client and decided to visit me. The first thing he did was complain. “Leila has completely lost her mind abroad. She has gone wild!” I asked what happened. He hesitated for a long time before gritting his teeth and saying that Leila had picked u

“Oh, sweetie, you really hate bothering us, don’t you? But I truly love you and hope you’ll consider studying abroad to broaden your horizons,” my mom said earnestly, her tone filled with persuasion. I hung up the call and went back to study.…After Leila went abroad, my college entrance exams drew closer. For many wealthy kids, the college entrance exams were just a minor hurdle—something they didn’t even need to bother with. But for me, it was the most important turning point of my life. With unwavering determination, I aimed to take first place in the year and secure a spot at the nation’s top university. I was fully confident. The moment I stepped out of the exam hall, tears streamed down my face. My deskmate rolled her eyes dramatically. “Why are you crying? Did you look at yourself in the mirror again?”When I got back to my apartment, I actually did look in the mirror. It was a new mirror I’d bought recently. I never used to have the habit of looking at myself,

The slap split my lip, and in that instant, the fragile remnants of my self-worth shattered completely. I broke down, sobbing uncontrollably, tears and snot streaming down my face. I looked like a messy, desperate beggar as I clawed at my hair, wailing with anguish. "Why did you hit me? You’re the ones who asked if I wanted to go abroad—it was your question! "You don’t love me. You’ve never loved me. You’d rather I was dead! Is that it? Would you finally be happy if I died?" Everyone froze, stunned by my outburst, then quickly grew enraged. My mom dropped her pretense of kindness and snapped, "Carol Lowe, what are you doing? Are you trying to embarrass us?" My dad waved the housekeepers away before barking, "Shut up! You’re a Lowe, not some screaming lunatic!" Shane sneered coldly, silent but brimming with disdain. I trembled violently—my lips, my hands, my entire body shaking uncontrollably. Three years. I didn’t even know why I was still alive after three years of
