ログインIt was dark at the resort
Then came the footsteps.
There were hundreds.
Sharon's heart raced. Even though she could no longer see the forest, she could hear it
The swish of branches; the squish of leaves; the guttural growls reverberating throughout the blackness
Michael stood frozen at the gate with Lisa clinging to his arm
"Sharon let us in!"
Sharon looked at him through the darkness
They were the same hands that led her to death in his previous life, the same voice that convinced her that Lisa was more important
All he wanted now was her help.
She almost burst out laughing
Alex came up beside her "Don't open the gate."
"Alex Knight?" Michael asked
"What?"
"You know me?"
"I know of you."
Michael hesitated.
"That's not what I asked."
Michael said nothing
Alex's gaze became icy "Who told you about this place?"
Michael turned away "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You came here with no working phone network, during a blackout, and when the city's roads have been blocked off. So I'll ask you again."
Michael swallowed "Someone sent me the location."
Sharon narrowed her eyes at him "Who?"
"I don't know."
"How were they able to contact you?"
Michael took out his phone "A message."
Sharon felt ice crawl up her spine "Show me."
Michael hesitated before turning the screen towards her
There was only one message
GO TO SHARON'S RESORT. SHE HAS WHAT YOU NEED.
Sharon's stomach twisted. Someone was actively sending people to her.
The footsteps in the forest grew louder
Then there was a scream. "They're here!"
Something smashed against the outer gate and sent it vibrating.
Michael stumbled backwards as Alex yelled "Get away from the gate!"
Several more impacts followed. The gate bent inwards
Sharon looked past the opening and her heart pounded. She knew what was coming
"A horde."
"How many?" Alex asked
"Too many."
"That's not a number."
"It's enough."
A strange smile almost escaped Alex's lips. Even now, she was still annoyingly calm
"Get the vehicles inside." He ordered his men
"What about us?" Michael immediately demanded
Alex turned towards him. "You can stay outside."
"Alex!"
Sharon raised a hand. "Open the gate."
Alex whirled around "NO."
"They'll die."
"They're not OUR responsibility."
Sharon looked at Michael. She remembered his betrayal, his begging, and how Lisa wore her jacket while he drove away
Her jaw tightened. She didn't want to save him.
She didn't want to let these infected tear the gate off while two people screamed outside
"Open the small entrance."
Alex stared at her. "You're serious."
"Yes."
"You trust him?"
"No."
"Then why?"
Sharon met his gaze. "Because I DECIDE who gets to live here."
Something almost akin to admiration flickered in Alex's eyes
"Open it."
The small gate opened and Michael dragged Lisa inside. As soon as they crossed the threshold, Sharon shut it. Something thudded against the other side
Michael fell to his knees; Lisa screamed
Sharon pointed towards the building. "Inside."
Michael stared at her. "Thank you."
Sharon walked past him. "Don't thank me."
"You get one chance." She paused. "If you steal from me; if you lie to me; if you place anyone in this resort in danger - I will make you wish the zombies had gotten you first."
Michael turned white; Lisa looked angry, but neither said anything
A thunderous impact sounded from the main gate. It buckled inwards
Alex barked orders and everyone moved
Sharon ran towards the control room and looked at the security monitors
The forest was swarming. Not twenty or fifty infected - there were hundreds
Something wasn't right.
They weren't wandering aimlessly
They were heading straight for the resort
Sharon's gaze swept the monitors. Someone was guiding them
She turned around and looked towards the main building
There was an explosion.
Sharon turned around and saw the main gate was gone. The infected poured in through the opening. Hundreds of them
Alex and his men opened fire, but there were simply too many
"Fall back!" Alex ordered
Sharon looked around. Her resort was being overrun. The walls wouldn't hold and the security measures weren't enough
She needed something more powerful.
Her Spatial Storage.
Sharon closed her eyes and looked at the endless expanse she had discovered. She had stored various supplies there, but she had never experimented with retrieving objects through the system
She reached out and grasped something heavy. When she pulled it free, Alex's eyes widened
"Where did that come from?"
Sharon ignored him. She raised the weapon and fired. A deafening explosion rocked the area and the front line of infected fell
Alex stared. "What the hell was that?"
Sharon looked at him. "A surprise."
Another wave of infected surged through the broken gate. Alex smiled.
"You really are full of them, aren't you?"
Sharon fired another round
For the first time, they fought back to back. Whenever an infected got close to Sharon, Alex felled it. Whenever Alex was surrounded, Sharon covered him. It was seamless; their movements were like a well-rehearsed dance
After a few minutes, the enemy horde began to thin. The remaining infected slunk back into the forest
Silence returned and the acrid smell of smoke lingered in the air
Sharon lowered the weapon.
Alex turned to face her. "You just saved everyone."
"I saved the resort."
"You keep saying that."
"Because it's TRUE."
Alex took a step closer. Their faces were inches apart and his gaze swept over her.
"You're not who you were."
Sharon's heart pounded. "You keep saying that."
"Because I can't stop thinking about it." His voice dropped to a near whisper. "What happened to you?"
Sharon swallowed. "Nothing."
Alex leaned closer. "Then why does it feel like you're always one step ahead of everyone?"
She didn't answer. His gaze lingered on her and, for a brief, terrifying moment, Sharon thought he was going to kiss her
"SHEARON!"
Michael's voice cut through the tension and Sharon took a step back. Alex's expression darkened
Michael came up to them. "There was another message."
Sharon's attention snapped to him. "What message?"
Michael held up his phone. "It says..."
Sharon took the phone from him
THE HORDE WASN'T AFTER THE RESORT
A chill ran down Sharon's spine as another message appeared on Michael's screen
IT WAS AFTER YOU
Her blood ran cold and she looked towards the trees. A human figure stood in the shadows. Watching
Sharon blinked and the figure was gone
Her phone gave off one final vibration
AND ALEX KNOWS WHY.
Alex frowned at the dark phone screen.Sharon stood beside him, chest heaving, her silver marked wrist concealed by the sleeve of her hoodie. The silence had grown thick in the chamber, like the cathedral itself was holding its breath."Call her back," Sharon said.Alex hit the speed dial for Luna right away.No connection. He tried again. No good."Daniel, get the radio working, I want every single frequency scanned," Alex ordered. "If we have to shake every military outpost between here and Haven, I want that damn signal."Daniel gave a brisk nod as he hurried toward the satchel.Mira sat with her back against the far wall, her usually unshakeable skin pallid in the dim light. Evelyn crouched beside her, checking her pulse while trying to avoid Sharon's wrist. Nobody wanted to voice the obvious.Luna had warned Alex to be wary of Sharon. Then her reflection had smiled where Sharon's face should be have been.Alex slowly turned toward his wife."Sharon?"Sharon met his gaze."Don't a
Sharon couldn’t breatheThe voice had not come from the speakers or the silver threads. It had originated in her very being, reverberating so that she could feel each word pulse at the edges of her visionWELCOME BACK, ORIGINAL SUBJECT .The silver mark on her wrist burned.Sharon gripped it with her other hand, trying to still the light slinking beneath her skin.“Get it out of me!”Alex lunged for her, but the moment his fingers brushed her wrist, the whole chamber exploded in white light. He was tossed backward.“Alex!”Daniel scrambled to his aid as the woman with the newborn fixed a horrified look on Sharon.“Don’t touch her,” Evelyn snapped. “No matter what’s happening, her nervous system is interfacing directly with the network.”“Then tell me how to stop it!” Sharon hissedEvelyn didn’t have an answer. The woman with the newborn stood motionless, save for the way her gaze followed Sharon as if recognizing her for the first timeHer charge had fallen silent as well, its silver
There were a few seconds of stillness. The woman waiting on the other side of the silver doorway looked just like Sharon. It had Sharon's face, her dark eyes and even the small scar on her left eyebrow. The way she was cradling the newborn was the same as well, as if Sharon had seen it a thousand times before. The baby was wrong. Its skin was a sickly pale pink and a thin silver line ran from its forhead to the hollow at its throat. Its eyes were closed but the silver fibres around it moved with every breath it took.Alex stared the woman down."You're not Sharon."She gave a sad smile."No. I'm the woman you married before you met her."Sharon felt Alex's hand clench around her own."What does that mean?" She demanded. The woman adjusted the baby in her arms."Ask your husband what happened on the night he first met you."Alex shook his head."I don't know what you're talking about.""You never do when it becomes inconvenient to remember."There was the sound of footsteps on the floo
The door slammed shut behind them. The noise caused Daniel to spin around immediately, raising his gun to wherever the doorway was."It's sealed," he announced after trying out the handle and finding a lack of mechanical lock. "Something is holding it."Silver threads were undulating along the walls, stretching down from the ceiling and reaching into the darkness beyond the room. It all pulsed gently like the veins in a living corpse. In the center of it, holding up a stuffed rabbit was the little girl in a yellow hospital gown.Emily.She looked no older than six years old with pale skin, silver eyes, and a rabbit with one ear hanging loose just as the memories Sharon had tried so desperately to unearth. The girl was staring at Alex.“You came back, Daddy.”Alex couldn't move.Sharon had seen him stand down armed men, she'd watched him walk through burning buildings and fight down foes that should have cut his throat. But now he looked like some man who's just discovered the ground b
"Daddy is the reason I died."Emily's words came to an abrupt halt on the sound of static. Sharons heart pounded in the deep silence of what followed before she realized the sound was her own heartbeat.Alex stood in the doorway of the settlement hall, his eyes fixed upon the small stuffed rabbit in Shadon's hands. He did not refute the accusations. He did not explain himself to Sharons surprise. He stared just as though he had spent a decade running from a specter in his past rather than merely days.Sharon knew she had seen Alex face down armed assailants and negotiate with terrorists. She knew he had made impossible choices that had cost the lives of hundreds if not thousands of people in his wake. But she had never seen him afraid of the childlike voice coming from behind her yet."Alex," she said quietly, forcing herself to her feet. "Tell me what you know."He looked up at her."I can't."The words cut deeper than she expected."You can't, or you won't?""I don't remember everyt
"Mommy, why did you let me die?"Sharon gripped the radio so hard her fingers ached.Years had taught her that the hardest thing a person could lose was the memory of a person they loved. She would never have believed that remembering the love before the loss was equally as devastating as forgetting the loss in the first place."Emily," she whispered. "Sweetheart, can you hear me?"There was a static crackling, then a soft sobbing."Mommy?""I'm here. I'm listening. Tell me where you are.""I don't know."Sharon's throat suddenly tightens."Can you see, Luna?""Yes.""Is she safe?"There was a long pause before the answer."She's sleeping," was her reply, "but the woman said she'll not awake until the house is finished."Alex leaned closer to the radio."What house, Emily?"The child's breathing changed."Who is that?""I'm your father, sweetheart."Another pause, then her voice came through again, whispering."You look different."Alex's face contorted with something like pain, then
