The world had already ended - Sharon knew that long before the sky turned blackSmoke clung to the sky like dirty fingers; flames licked at shop facades to either side, and the rain refused to put them out,Sticking to Sharon's skin as she ran with dry skin and blood oozing from a ripped shoulder. One hand gripping a strap that wasn't there. From behind she heard the growls; dozens; perhaps hundreds, flowing like a river along the ruin avenue"Michael!"Her voice was a raw croak as she stumbled backwards, and turned to the sound. Across the street, a couple of shops away, stood her husband. Beside an abandoned van, it's doors hanging loosely on their hinges, Michael held their backpack. The one filled with the last four bottles of water, the antibiotics Sharon had bartered her mother's necklace for, the canned food she had carried for two agonizing days, the painkillers she'd saved.Sharon's eyes widened as he looked up at the sound of her voice."Michael, wait!"He looked her up and

Sharon didn't sleep. The ideas in the messages persisted in her mind. You are purchasing the correct items. You're forgetting something. You should have a safe place before Day Zero. The one who sent them knew all.She was on the verge of her bed looking at the lights of the town. In 30 days those lights would die. The roads would turn into battlefields. The hospitals would turn into slaughterhouses.Only those who had prepared in advance would survive.Sharon already knew which place she would go.A disused resort, set outside the city. Thick concrete walls, underground rooms, private well and one road in. During her previous life, it was too late for any survivors and they killed one another for it.This time, it would be her first to own.Her phone buzzed. Her banker: All shares are liquidated. She checked her bank account. More than enough. She dialed the agent's number. I want the resort. I'll pay cash and I sign this day.---She was 3 hours later standing inside the property! I

Sharon eyed the message again.DAY ZERO BEGINS IN SEVEN DAYS.She couldn't understand how that could be it.Seven days. She had been preparing for thirty. For thirty days of shopping, thirty days of reinforcing the resort walls.Thirty days before the world went down the toilet. But if the bastard's message was true, then everything was different.Sharon turned to Alex."Who told you about the infected case?""My security team.""How reliable are they?"Alex's expression darkened"Very"Sharon turned away from him.In her previous life, the reports of the first infection had come slow.A weird sickness, with high fevers and aggression, followed by death. And then the bodies began to move. But the government covered it up.Hospitals were overcrowded, news networks reported a virus, and by the time people realized what was happening, it was too late.Sharon had been caught completely off guard. This time, she wanted to make sure that she wouldn't be.If Day Zero was truly seven days awa

It was dark at the resortThen came the footsteps. There were hundreds.Sharon's heart raced. Even though she could no longer see the forest, she could hear itThe swish of branches; the squish of leaves; the guttural growls reverberating throughout the blacknessMichael stood frozen at the gate with Lisa clinging to his arm"Sharon let us in!"Sharon looked at him through the darknessThey were the same hands that led her to death in his previous life, the same voice that convinced her that Lisa was more importantAll he wanted now was her help. She almost burst out laughingAlex came up beside her "Don't open the gate.""Alex Knight?" Michael asked"What?""You know me?""I know of you."Michael hesitated."That's not what I asked."Michael said nothingAlex's gaze became icy "Who told you about this place?"Michael turned away "I don't know what you're talking about.""You came here with no working phone network, during a blackout, and when the city's roads have been blocked off. S

Michael ran.Sharon stared at his retreating back in shock. Her ex-husband disappeared around the side of the resort.Alex was already on his way."Stay here."Sharon ignored him.She ran after them."Sharon!"She didn't slow down.Michael had been keeping secrets from her. Secrets that involved Alex.Secrets that could be connected to the apocalypse. She wasn't about to let him walk away with the truth. She rounded the corner just in time to see Michael yanked back against the wall by Alex."Let me go!"Alex shoved him against the wall."Now, start talking."Michael struggled against his grip."I don't know anything!"Alex took hold of his shirt."You signed the contract.""I didn't know what it was!"Alex gave him a hard look."Then explain it."Michael's eyes darted toward Sharon. She stopped a few feet away."What contract?"Michael looked genuinely terrified.Sharon's voice hardened."Explain."Michael swallowed."It was six months ago.""How much?""Five million."Sharon blinked
