MasukMichael ran.
Sharon stared at his retreating back in shock.
Her ex-husband disappeared around the side of the resort.
Alex was already on his way.
"Stay here."
Sharon ignored him.
She ran after them.
"Sharon!"
She didn't slow down.
Michael had been keeping secrets from her. Secrets that involved Alex.
Secrets that could be connected to the apocalypse.
She wasn't about to let him walk away with the truth.
She rounded the corner just in time to see Michael yanked back against the wall by Alex.
"Let me go!"
Alex shoved him against the wall.
"Now, start talking."
Michael struggled against his grip.
"I don't know anything!"
Alex took hold of his shirt.
"You signed the contract."
"I didn't know what it was!"
Alex gave him a hard look.
"Then explain it."
Michael's eyes darted toward Sharon.
She stopped a few feet away.
"What contract?"
Michael looked genuinely terrified.
Sharon's voice hardened.
"Explain."
Michael swallowed.
"It was six months ago."
"How much?"
"Five million."
Sharon blinked.
Five million?
"Why?"
Michael looked away.
"My business was going under."
Sharon almost laughed.
"So you borrowed 5 million from Alex?"
"Not exactly."
Alex shoved him off.
Michael stumbled forward.
"The money came from one of Alex's companies."
Sharon looked at Alex.
"And what did you have to do in return?"
Michael stayed silent.
"Michael."
"I signed a research agreement."
Sharon's stomach twisted.
"Research?"
Michael nodded.
"I had to grant access to several facilities."
"What kind of facilities?"
"Medical facilities."
Alex's expression darkened.
"Tell her the rest."
Michael turned pale.
"I didn't know what they were researching."
"You're lying."
"I'm not!"
Alex took a step closer.
"You were paid twice after the first shipment."
Michael went rigid.
Sharon narrowed her eyes.
"Shipment?"
Michael looked at her.
Then away again.
Sharon suddenly understood.
"What did you have to transport?"
"Medical equipment."
"That's not what I asked."
Michael refused to say anything else.
Sharon's voice was icier.
"What did you transport?"
"Samples."
The word hung in the air.
Sharon felt sick.
"What kind of samples?"
Michael shook his head.
"I don't know."
Alex chuckled.
"You knew enough to take the money."
Michael's face flushed red.
"I needed it!"
"And people died."
Silence.
Sharon looked at Alex.
"What were they researching?"
Alex refused to answer.
"Alex."
He looked at her again.
"A virus."
Her blood ran cold.
"Experimental virus."
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Where?"
"Several laboratories."
"Yours?"
"Some."
Sharon took a step away from him.
The anonymous messages.
The early outbreak.
The infected appearing before the time that they were supposed to.
It all made so much sense now.
But there was still one question left.
"Did you create it?"
Alex's expression hardened.
"No."
"Then who did?"
"I don't know."
Sharon didn't believe him.
Alex took a step closer.
"I've spent the last two weeks looking for that answer."
"Two weeks?"
He nodded.
"The first reports were before you even saw me."
Sharon studied his face closely.
For the first time she saw the exhaustion behind his carefully constructed mask.
It wasn't that Alex was lying to protect himself.
It was that he was searching for something he didn't know existed.
That, however, didn't make him innocent.
"What happened to the laboratory?"
Alex looked toward the dark forest.
"It was destroyed."
"By who?"
"That's what I don't know."
Sharon's phone suddenly went off.
She stared down at the screen.
Another anonymous message appeared.
NOW YOU KNOW WHY ALEX IS DANGEROUS.
Her fingers curled into a fist around the phone.
Then another message appeared.
BUT HE ISN'T THE ONE WHO STARTED IT.
Sharon's eyes widened.
The sender of these messages knew everything.
Too much, in fact.
She quickly typed a reply.
Then who started it?
The next message appeared seconds later.
Ask Michael what he delivered on October 28.
Sharon slowly turned her gaze on Michael.
"What did you deliver on October 28?"
Michael's face went completely white.
Alex turned toward him.
"You never told me that."
Michael took a step back.
"I don't remember."
Sharon took a step closer.
"You do."
"I don't."
"You remember."
Michael shook his head.
"Sharon, please."
"Tell me."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
Michael's lips trembled.
"Because I wasn't alone."
Alex's expression changed.
"Who was with you?"
Michael looked at him.
Then at Sharon.
"Lisa."
Sharon's breath caught in her throat.
Lisa.
Of course.
Lisa was always part of this.
The woman that Michael had chosen over her in his past life.
Maybe the affair between the two of them had started long before she even knew.
"What did Lisa do?" Sharon said.
Michael looked absolutely terrified.
"She gave them something."
"What?"
"I don't know."
Sharon grabbed his arm.
"What did she give them?"
Michael opened his mouth to say something, but a loud gunshot rung out in the night.
Michael's body stiffened.
Sharon screamed as Alex pulled her behind him.
Another gunshot rung out, embedding itself in the wall beside them.
"Down!"
Alex pulled Sharon to the ground.
Michael's body went limp.
His shirt was already stained red.
"Michael!"
Sharon rushed to his side, but Alex pulled her back.
"Don't!"
"He was shot!"
"Exactly."
Another shot rang out, this one just above their heads.
Alex looked toward the trees.
"Sniper."
Sharon's heart pounded in her chest.
"Can you see them?"
"No."
Alex pulled her behind a concrete barrier.
He scanned the trees.
Then his phone vibrated in his hand.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Sharon looked at him.
"What is it?"
He showed her the phone.
ONE SECRET WAS ENOUGH
Then another message appeared.
NOW LET'S SEE IF SHARON SURVIVES THE NEXT ONE.
Sharon's blood ran cold.
A third message appeared on the screen.
THE NEXT PERSON TO DIE WILL BE ALEX KNIGHT.
Alex slowly turned his gaze toward the trees.
Sharon looked at him.
For the first time, she saw true fear in his eyes.
They weren't just being watched.
They were being hunted.
Sharon tried to move.Nothing happened. Her fingers remained wrapped around the baby, but they no longer belonged to her.Her legs were frozen. Her lungs barely moved.Even her heartbeat seemed to have fallen under someone else's control. The baby stared into her eyes.“Wake me.”Sharon's mind screamed.MOVE.Her body refused.Across the chamber, Alex was still trapped behind the glass, with Michael standing behind him and a gun pressed against his head.Daniel yelled out, but his voice was lost to Sharon, she couldn't make out what he was saying anymore.Everything sounded distant.Muffled.The system appeared.ORGANISM AWAKENING: 100%Sharon's vision blurred. Then a new message appeared.HOST ACCEPTANCE REQUIRED.She stared at the words.Host acceptance? She hadn't agreed to anything. The little one gently put his small hand on her chest.A wave of heat exploded through her body.Suddenly, Sharon could hear everything. The heartbeat beneath the facility. The creatures moving through
Sharon spun around so fast, her world blurred before her."Alex!"There was nothing but silence. The room was exactly the same, except Alex wasn't there, and the pool of blood on the ground was the only sign that he had been there.Daniel raised his weapon."Everyone stay together."Sharon barely heard him.Her eyes flicked around the room searching every detail."Alex!"There was a muffled sound coming from the speakers. Then static. Then Alex's voice."Sharon..."She was at the control panel in an instant."Alex, where are you?"There was a distorted laugh. It wasn't Alex's.It was Michaels."You should've seen your face."Sharon felt her blood run cold."Where is he?""You're asking the wrong question again.""Michael!""He's exactly where he needs to be."The screen came to life.It revealed Alex's face.He was in some kind of small metal chamber with his hands bound behind him, blood trickling down his cheek.Sharon took a step forward."Alex!"His eyes immediately locked onto he
Sharon stared at the last line as if it etched itself into her mindTHE HOST IS NOT THE BABYIT IS SHARONHer first reaction was to deny it, for even after everything she had been through, everything she had survived, there was one thing she still feared. That she was the reason the apocalypse had come about.Alex pushed himself up off his knees, despite the blood tricking down his face"Sharon"She turned to look at him"Tell me the system is lying"Alex said nothingDaniel immediately stood"The countdown says six hours, whatever sublevel ten is we need to find it before the connection reaches one hundred percent"Sharon looked at him"You said there wasn't a sublevel ten""There wasn't""Then how did it appear?"Daniel's expression darkened"Because someone created it after the timeline changed"A deep vibration rumbled beneath their feetTHUMPDust trickled down from the ceilingAlex stood“We're going down.”Daniel shook his head "Absolutely not"Alex looked at him"You have a be
Sharon was gazing at the knife pressed to Alex's throat, wondering how the woman in front of her could be the same one who had been in front of him since the apocalypse, yet appear more threatening than all the beasts, soldiers and enemies he had encountered since that time. The old Sharon grinned.“It is always you that does not understand.”Sharon's gaze shifted to the small boy standing between them. Her son.Or the child the system wanted her to think was hers.So what if I elect him?The original Sharon nudged the knife a little bit closer to Alex's neck.“The world dies.”So what if I say 'and if I chose the world?“Your son dies.”Sharon's fists tightened.“There has to be another choice.”The old Sharon laughed.“There isn't.”Suddenly, Alex noticed that he saw eyes in the eyes of Sharon.“Don't listen to her.”Sharon's face became grim.“You've already failed once.”Alex didn't respond. She continued.“In the past, you selected Sharon over the world.”Sharon's eyes widened.“
Sharon couldn't breathe. Before her eyes were the words still hovering.YOU WERE NEVER BROUGHT BACK TO SURVIVE THE APOCALYPSE.YOU HAVE BEEN RETURNED TO FILL IN.She had believed that her rebirth was a gift, a second chance given to her so she could escape from the betrayal that had slain her and so survive the apocalypse that had destroyed the world, for 30 days. Now the system informed her that all she had been doing could have been a part of someone else's plan.“No.”She could just barely get the words out of her mouth.Michael's hands around her neck grew tighter.“Now you're starting to get it.”Sharon punched him in the ribs with her elbow. He released her.She backed up, picked up her gun and shot. The reason Michael was hit by the bullet was his chest. He staggered. But he didn't fall.He instead locked his gaze on the wound and laughed.“You haven't yet taken the time to learn about yourself.”Sharon lifted up the weapon once more.I know just what my name means.”Michael st
Sharon was filled with fear and for the first time since her rebirth, she felt something far more dangerous than fear.Confusion.Men both had Alex's face. Both had Alex's voice. They were both the same height, both had cold eyes, and both had a scar on the side of their jawline that Sharon recalled from the prior one. However, only one of these could be true. The left Alex was holding a gun.His black eyes never left Sharon. The other Alex stood several meters back, with metal restraints tightly bound around his wrists, with blood dripping down his face. The quiet Alex repeated: “Sharon.” “Don't let him touch you...The armed Alex gave an enigmatic smile. He obviously said that because, “of course he would say that!”Sharon slowly raised her weapon.“Don't move from where you are.Stay put, both of you.”The two Alexes looked each other up.They didn't say a word for some time. Then the armed one laughed.“You really don't know which one is me?”Sharon's eyes narrowed.“One of you is
