Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
Wendy's remarks immediately attracted everyone's attention, causing every single one of them to turn their gaze toward me.

I snapped at her in a fit of rage, yelling, "What the hell are you talking about?"

Wendy acted as if she had accidentally let something slip and immediately covered her mouth. "I'm so sorry, Yvonne. I'm just saying whatever comes to mind. I hope you're not mad at me…"

I immediately snapped, "You'd better stop spouting nonsense this instant, Wendy!"

I was preparing to leave when I was suddenly stopped. "I'm one of the invigilators assigned to this exam hall. I have received a report that you may be suspected of cheating, so please cooperate with the investigation."

I furrowed my brow and said, "I didn't cheat on the SAT."

Wendy nodded repeatedly, saying, "That's right. Yvonne didn't cheat. She only brought a cheat sheet in her clear zip-lock bag, so don't blame her for that."

I felt a sharp pain in my chest from the anger. "You'd better stop slandering me with those lies, Wendy!"

Wendy's eyes immediately welled up with tears. She stomped her feet and started sobbing, saying, "I'm just trying to help you, yet you're scolding me instead! You're really hurting my feelings, Yvonne!"

Upon taking my clear zip-lock bag and looking through it several times with a stern expression, the invigilator failed to find any so-called cheat sheet. He then furrowed his brow slightly and said, "I'm sorry. It seems like we misunderstood the situation."

It was then that Wendy, who was holding a water bottle, suddenly slammed into me, pouring the water all over my clear zip-lock bag. She then put on that feigned, innocent look of hers and said, "I'm so sorry, Yvonne. I'm such a klutz! I didn't mean to get your things wet! You're okay, right?"

I was just about to say something when someone suddenly pointed at my clear zip-lock bag, exclaiming, "Check it out! There's some writing on the back of her admission ticket!"

I looked down to see dense handwriting bleeding through the water-soaked admission ticket, and before long, the invigilator snatched it up, his expression turning grim. "You've got some nerve, Yvonne—cheating on the SAT is a federal crime!"

I was shaking all over from panic. "I don't know how that got there! I didn't write any of those! I didn't cheat on the SAT!"

Christian stepped forward from the crowd, looking at me with utter disappointment. "If you just admit it now, they might go easy on you, Yvonne. You should stop being so stubborn at this moment."

I snapped and yelled at the top of my lungs, "I didn't do anything wrong, so there's no way I'm confessing to anything!"

Christian shook his head in resignation before saying, "I'm Yvonne's boyfriend. She told me she was going to use an invisible-ink pen to write down those notes on the admission ticket last night. I tried to talk her out of it, but I guess she went ahead and did it anyway."

In that instant, I was met with the angry gazes of every single person who had just taken the exam.

"You're truly unbelievable! Do you know how much we've been grinding just for the SAT? How dare you cheat your way through!"

"How can you do this to those of us who actually work hard? Your kind is exactly why I failed my SAT last year! You truly deserve to die!"

Those indignant crowds—those who had previously failed the SAT—turned their fury on me. They started pelting me with their drinks and whatever books they had on hand.

"You're actually cheating on the SAT? You're such a lowlife! You should just drop dead!"

"I'm calling the authorities this instant! You should rot in jail instead of destroying other candidates' chances!"

It was then that a group of invigilators walked out of the exam hall. They immediately furrowed their brows upon hearing the commotion. "Who cheated on the SAT? Which room did this happen in? Who was the presiding invigilator?"

Upon hearing that, the invigilator who had been questioning me earlier looked at my admission ticket and replied, "She's from Room 18—Seat 08."

It was then that one of the invigilators from the group blurted out, "That candidate in Seat 08 didn't even show up. How could she possibly cheat on the SAT?"

Christian's face turned bright red after my retort, leaving him completely at a loss for words. It was the third day after the SAT concluded when the police reached out to me.I arrived at the police station, where the police informed me that the handwriting analysis was complete and the results matched Wendy's. They noted that although what Wendy did was a major criminal offense, since I hadn't suffered severe physical or lasting harm, she was looking at over a year in prison, a 30-thousand-dollar fine, and 50 thousand dollars in compensation for the psychological toll it took on me.I was relatively satisfied with the outcome of this case. The following day, I got stopped by Christian, who was waiting outside my house. I furrowed my brow and stared at him, asking, "What do you think you're doing here? Do you intend to trespass on private property?"Christian stood over me with a domineering expression and ordered, "You're going to drop those charges right now and sign a waiver

I asked with a sneer, "Why should I tolerate Wendy's wrongdoings? She's not the only one who worked hard for more than a decade to prepare for the SAT. "If I had stayed in the room and been arrested for cheating, which one of you would have taken responsibility for my ruined life? It's easy for you to take the high road and tell me to let it go when it's not your neck on the line."I stepped toward Wendy, forcing her to keep backing up. I kept my eyes locked on hers as I demanded an answer. "You'd better tell the truth right now, Wendy. Did you write those cheat sheets on my admission ticket?"Wendy avoided my gaze out of guilt, still refusing to admit anything. "I don't know what you're talking about, so please stop pressuring me."Christian shot me a dissatisfied look. "Do you really have to be so confrontational, Yvonne?"I merely nodded as I took out my phone. "I'll stop being so confrontational and allow the police to handle this, then. I'm sure they'll clear my name. It won

Wendy was left utterly dumbfounded by my outburst. She merely stood there in a daze, her eyes brimming with tears.Christian protectively pulled Wendy behind him before snapping at me, "What the hell is wrong with you, Yvonne? You're scaring Wendy! Why do you keep picking on Wendy on purpose, even though you know how pure-hearted she is?"I rolled my eyes in annoyance and ignored them completely. I looked toward the exam officials and invigilators and asked, "I haven't actually broken any rules or committed a crime since I didn't take part nor cheat on the SAT, right?" Upon hearing that, the invigilator nodded in assent and said, "I'm so sorry. It seems that we've misunderstood what happened earlier."Christian sneered and said mockingly, "You probably planned to cheat on the SAT all along; after all, you already had your cheat sheets ready. You probably got cold feet once the bell rang and decided to abandon the SAT."In that instant, the crowd around me began pointing and whisp

In that instant, a dead silence fell over the crowd as the words sank in, while the invigilator repeated himself. "I'm the head invigilator for Room 18, and as soon as the starting bell rang, before the exam papers were handed out, Candidate 08 claimed to feel unwell and voluntarily left the exam hall.Wendy visibly panicked for a split second before frowning at me. She then reprimanded me, asking, "Oh, my! How could you just abandon the SAT, Yvonne? Do you know how important that exam is? You're being far too irresponsible about your future, Yvonne."I was completely exasperated. "You should drop the act and stop talking to me like that, Wendy! It's making me sick! It's also my business whether I quit the SAT or not. What's it to you, huh? What gives you the right to question my choices, Wendy?"Wendy pouted before bursting into tears, crying in an exaggerated, childish way. "How could you talk to me like that, Yvonne? I'm only looking out for you, but you're being so mean! I'm so

I sat down and asked the nurse to swap out the IV drip once Christian and Wendy left. I was aware that calling the police wouldn't really work, but I did it just to rattle Christian, who was incredibly anxious about the SAT and couldn't risk even the slightest mishap.I returned to the dormitory that evening and immediately packed my exam essentials into my bag before locking it inside my cabinet. In my past life, Wendy used the excuse of compensating me to pack my exam materials. I wasn't feeling well then, and since she seemed well-intentioned, I didn't stop her.I double-checked everything and went for the SAT after she packed it, but midway through, a crumpled ball of paper fell out of my clear zip-lock bag. I was immediately accused of cheating, and when the invigilator opened the crumpled paper ball, it was discovered to be a cheat sheet.I was convicted of cheating, my exam scores were voided, and I even faced the possibility of imprisonment. I broke down and confronted Wend
