Chapter 6

Author: Zora
The pack hospital descended into chaos. Ambulances kept ferrying infected children to the quarantine center.

Watching those children convulse and gasp for air, I couldn't hold it together anymore.

I dropped to my knees in the pediatric corridor, sobbing until my voice broke.

"I'm sorry. I didn't do this on purpose. Please believe me.

"VRX-17 really is contaminated."

I didn't know how to explain it.

Aaron's first test had shown nothing wrong.

I had double-checked everything before resuming the injections, and the earlier children had all been fine.

But less than half an hour later, after the nurse brought in new syringes, the infections reappeared.

The families surrounded me, the parents of the less seriously affected children closing in.

"This is a new vaccine purchased with funds allocated by the Alpha King. How could there be a problem?"

"If even this vaccine isn't safe, the pack hospital should be shut down!"

"Open your eyes and look at these children! They're like this because of you!"

"Just because she's the director's fiancee, she thinks she can use children as test subjects?"

Despair, grief, and terror crushed down on me until I couldn't breathe.

I opened my mouth, but beyond "I'm sorry," I couldn't form a single complete sentence.

The furious families looked ready to tear me apart on the spot.

Perhaps because of the devastation written across my face, or perhaps to calm the crowd, Aaron finally spoke up.

"Everyone, settle down. The medical team will do everything they can to treat the pups.

"As for the cause of the incident, the pack guards and the Medical Council will conduct a joint investigation.

"We will give every family an answer."

Late that night, I was taken to the pack guards' investigation center.

The moment I walked in, I saw Mom and Dad waiting anxiously in the corridor.

I threw myself into their arms, repeating the words I'd said more than any others that day.

"I'm sorry, but the vaccine really is contaminated. I didn't deliberately hurt those children."

Their tears fell instantly, and they held me tight.

"Evelyn, we believe you.

"And we believe the investigation will find the truth."

They stayed with me, waiting for the test results.

Throughout the night, families of the victims kept arriving at the investigation center. The moment any of them saw me, they erupted in curses.

I understood their pain. All I could do was apologize and explain, over and over.

My parents had lived with dignity their entire lives, and now they stood beside me absorbing every accusation.

Eventually, Mom collapsed. Between the emotional toll and the crushing pressure radiating from several furious Alphas, she couldn't take it anymore and fainted.

The impact of this incident was enormous. The preliminary test results arrived quickly.

The next morning, Noah Lawson, director of the investigation center, walked into the interrogation room with a report. His expression was ice-cold.

"Evelyn, the VRX-17 sealed by the hospital shows no sign of viral contamination.

"The batch numbers, cold chain records, and administration logs are all in order.

"You are suspected of unauthorized expansion of the vaccination scope resulting in a major medical incident. The pack guards are placing you under formal arrest."

Hearing those words, my parents froze for a moment before their eyes filled with tears.

Mom clutched Noah's hand and pleaded.

"Could you please run the tests one more time? My daughter would never make this kind of mistake."

Dad took the report and pointed to the testing procedures.

"She's been a doctor for fifteen years. She couldn't possibly confuse a positive and a negative result. Something must have been missed."

Noah's face held both anger and reluctance.

"I understand she's your only daughter, but the injured and dead pups are even more innocent."

The world spun around me, and I collapsed into the chair.

Why? What had gone wrong?

The handcuffs locked around my wrists, and the cold metal sent a jolt through my body.

I lowered my head and suddenly remembered the batch number in the lab report.

Had the hospital actually sent the same drugs that had been injected into the children?

I shot to my feet.

"I know. I know where the problem is!"

A few months later, the case went to trial in Werewolf Court. The number of infection incidents tied to Vanessa and Lucas turned out to be far greater than we had initially discovered. Some families lost children. Some children were left permanently disabled. And some doctors, crushed by massive compensation and ruined reputations, had their lives destroyed. At trial, the prosecution presented the 0719-X samples, the filling equipment, the security label print records, the server access logs, the wire transfers, the forged medical files, the surveillance footage, and witness testimony.Vanessa's defense still argued she had only intended to create medical incidents, not to cause deaths. But the prosecution pointed out that she had known the contaminated drugs could cause encephalitis, paralysis, and death, yet continued committing these acts for three years. When it came time for victim statements, Ella produced the suicide note she had written the day she was suspended."If Noah had f

I was shaking all over.In my past life, her plan had worked.Everyone called me a monster who experimented on children. The Medical Council ruled I was a liar. The Werewolf Court sentenced me to death. My parents traveled from pack to pack fighting my case, only to be charged as accomplices and die in humiliation and debt. And Vanessa had stayed hidden inside the hospital, taking over my position, perhaps even laughing at how foolish I'd been."When I first asked to destroy the vaccine, what were you doing?"I asked."Watching the project dashboard."Vanessa made no more effort to hide anything."I thought you'd caught on. But then Alaric rejected your request."When you went ahead with the vaccinations, I actually thought you were pretty stupid."But you called it off early, and Noah preserved all the empty vials.""In this life, only twelve children were infected. Are you sorry it wasn't more?"She frowned but didn't answer. Her expression said everything.I couldn't hold back anymo

Vanessa looked away."Just random notes.""You knew exactly when the vaccinations would start, and you knew which batch would be pulled for spot-checking."After the first test passed, you had the nurse deliver the tray mixed with 0719-X to the treatment room."While the children were falling ill, you were watching the inventory and usage numbers on your tablet the entire time."Vanessa's expression visibly froze.I continued."After I halted the vaccinations, you thought your plan had failed."But when Alaric ordered the vaccinations to resume, you waited for the nurse shift change and slipped the last tray in."After the incident, you swapped out the remaining 0719-X, deleted the print records, and erased the cold storage footage."You also altered the staffing schedules, the medication approvals, and the emergency logs in advance, so every document pointed to my protocol violations."You didn't want me suspended."You wanted me sentenced. And you wanted my parents to die carrying th

I had my own folder too. When the technicians delivered the recovered files to the investigation center, I immediately spotted my own photograph.Beneath it, she had written:[Project director. Overly cautious. Easily cornered by procedure.][After the incident, hospital handles internal accountability. Parents classified as accomplices.][Alaric will prioritize protecting the hospital.][Chief position vacancy. Engagement dissolved.]Those few lines sent ice through my entire body.Vanessa hadn't been scrambling after the fact. She had calculated exactly what everyone would do long before any of it happened. As long as official records deemed the vaccine normal, the hospital would protect its century-old reputation by pushing all responsibility onto me.Alaric trusted protocol more than he trusted me and would inevitably side with the hospital. And my parents, in their desperation to appeal, would be dragged down by the fabricated records she had planted to implicate them.Everything

Noah summoned Marcus again. This time, Marcus fell apart completely."The cold storage terminal is shared by the entire pharmacy."You can't hold Vanessa responsible just because someone used her account.""Why were the print records deleted?""I don't know!"Noah's smile was cold."Your hospital's system really is considerate. It only loses data when there's an investigation."Emily offered another lead."Vanessa has a personal tablet."She never lets anyone touch it. She always says it has project files on it."Before every vaccination session, she'd go off to the break room to check the cold storage inventory and the adverse reaction platform."The technicians recovered more access records from the main server. On vaccination day, a device had repeatedly queried how many VRX-17 doses had left inventory and how many had been used, starting the moment I entered the treatment room. When I first halted the vaccinations, the query frequency dropped. After Alaric ordered the vaccinations

I lunged for the interrogation room door, but Noah held me back."Evelyn, don't take her bait."She's trying to provoke you.""I know."I clenched my fists so hard my knuckles went white."But she knows everything."She knows which batch would be spot-checked, and she knows that after the incident, only normal 0719-B would be left in the cold storage."Noah sighed."We suspect her too, but an investigation can't run on suspicion alone."The surveillance proved Vanessa had brought in the medication case. The double labels proved the syringes had been switched. But without the filling equipment, the contamination source, and an external supplier, she could keep insisting she knew nothing. My phone suddenly rang.It was Dad."Evelyn, how's the investigation going?""They're still working on it. We'll have answers soon."I tried to keep my voice steady."How's Mom?"A few seconds of silence on the other end."She's awake, just a little dizzy. I brought her to the hospital for a checkup."M
