Chapter 48 — They Looked At Her

Grant noticed the problem because nobody raised their voice.

A repair worker came out of stores holding two request slips and stopped beside the table where the new wolf was sorting returns. Caleb was somewhere behind the shelves, out of sight.

“These are both for the same coil,” the worker said.

The wolf looked at the slips. Grant stayed where he was near the open door. The first few days after someone new joined Cedar Draw usually produced larger problems than this.

This was smaller. There was one coil of wire left on the shelf and two crews had written for it.

The worker lifted both slips. “Which one gets it?”

The wolf glanced toward the yard. Several people had heard the question. Grant watched their attention move.

Not to him. To Hallie.

She stood a few yards away with the work board under one arm, speaking to the woman who had brought crew numbers to the meal count. The conversation stopped. Hallie’s gaze lifted from the woman to the people watching her.

For a second, she looked almost suspicious of the silence. Then she crossed to stores.

“What happened?”

The repair worker handed her the slips.

“One coil. Two requests.”

Hallie read them.

She had the board and knew which crews depended on which materials. She could decide quickly and defend the choice.

Instead, she looked at the wolf behind the table.

“What do you want to do?”

He blinked.

“I don’t know.”

Hallie left the silence open. The wolf looked down at the slips again.

“One request came first.”

“Does that settle it?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

He frowned at the paper.

“Because yesterday we moved the request that blocked more work ahead of one that came first.”

Hallie nodded once.

“So what do you need to know?”

The wolf looked toward the two workers waiting nearby.

“What happens if each crew doesn’t get it?”

One man answered immediately.

“We stop the frame repair.”

The other shook his head. “We don’t stop. We can do the lower section first.”

The wolf pointed to him.

“For how long?”

“Half the day, maybe.”

Then he looked at the first worker.

“And you?”

“We’re at the part where we need it now.”

The wolf’s shoulders eased.

“Then they get the coil.”

He indicated the first crew.

“And the other request stays open.”

The second worker frowned. “So we just wait?”

Hallie still did not answer. The wolf did.

“You keep working on what doesn’t need it. I mark the shortage so the next supply check sees it.”

The worker looked toward Hallie. Grant felt the old reflex in that glance. Not quite asking permission.

Checking whether the answer counted. Hallie gave him nothing to hide behind.

“What’s wrong with that?” she asked.

The man opened his mouth, then closed it. The older resident who had once objected to Hallie sounding too much like a traditional Luna had been listening from the edge of the yard. He stepped closer.

“The part where one person decides which crew matters more.”

Grant felt the tension around Hallie sharpen. He could end the argument. One sentence from him would do it.

He kept his mouth shut. Hallie looked at the older resident.

“That’s not what happened.”

“He chose.”

“He asked what each delay cost.”

“And then chose.”

“Yes.”

The man folded his arms.

“That is how authority starts.”

Hallie did not rush to defend herself. She looked back at the wolf.

“Do you still want to handle it this way?”

The wolf hesitated. Everyone waited. Grant watched Hallie instead.

She had been given the opening to take the decision back into her own hands. No one would have blamed her. She had more experience than the wolf and more trust than he did.

She left the choice where it belonged. The wolf read both slips again.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I can explain it. One crew stops now. The other still has work. If that changes before more wire comes in, they come back and we look again.”

Hallie turned to the older resident.

“Would you accept that process if I weren’t standing here?”

The man looked at the slips. Then at the two crews. Then at the wolf.

“I’d accept it if anybody could challenge it.”

The wolf answered before Hallie could.

“They can.”

The older resident raised a brow.

“And if you’re wrong?”

“Then I change it.”

A long pause followed. Grant felt Hallie’s pride before he let himself name his own. The older resident finally nodded.

“Then mark why the first crew got it.”

Hallie’s expression tightened. “No names. No record of who won and lost.”

“I didn’t say names.”

The man pointed at the shortage line already used on the board.

“Just mark that one job stopped without it. Then if the other crew comes back, nobody has to take your word for why.”

Hallie considered, her gaze moving from the note to the shortage line.

“That works,” she said.

The wolf nodded. He wrote a short note beside the open request. The first crew took the wire.

The second left without it. No one looked pleased. No one looked defeated either.

The older resident lingered for another second.

“I still don’t want a Luna deciding every small thing in Cedar Draw.”

Hallie met his eyes.

“Neither do I.”

He glanced toward the wolf behind the table.

“That’s why this works.”

Then he walked away. Grant remained still. He had wanted Cedar Draw to see Hallie.

But this was not recognition he could have given her. It was better. People looked at Hallie because they trusted her judgment.

Hallie used that trust to make room for someone else’s. Grant had not lent her the authority, and he did not need to claim what she had earned.

Someone asked the wolf another question about stores. Hallie stayed out of the answer.

The wolf answered for himself.

Hallie woke before Grant and stayed still for several seconds. His arm was heavy across her waist. The room was still gray with early light, quiet enough that she could hear his breathing and the faint sounds of Cedar Draw waking beyond the walls.Nothing about the morning looked different. That felt important.Hallie’s name had gained no title overnight. Grant was no easier for other packs to understand, and the mate bond with Austin still existed as a distant pull she could not erase simply because she had chosen something else. And the man beside her was still the man she had chosen. Hallie shifted carefully. Grant’s eyes opened.“You can move,” he said, voice rough with sleep.“I was trying not to wake you.”“Failed.”She smiled. His arm loosened immediately. Hallie noticed that too.Even now, after the night they had shared, he did not assume closeness gave him ownersh

By nightfall, Cedar Draw felt like itself again. The visiting party was gone. The signed agreement had been put away where Caleb could find it tomorrow. Someone had already complained about a stores count, someone else had left muddy boots where they did not belong, and dinner had ended with three separate arguments that had nothing to do with politics.Hallie had missed ordinary problems. She finished helping clear the long table and looked toward the corridor. Grant had disappeared sometime after the meal. Not avoiding her. She knew the difference now. Hallie found him in his room with his sleeves rolled to his forearms, folding a shirt that had no reason to require that much attention. She leaned against the doorframe.“You know that’s already folded.”Grant looked down at it.“So it is.”Hallie smiled. The room was quiet. For days, every meaningful conversation between them had seemed to

The first page of the report concerned the agreement. Austin read it carefully.Cedar Draw and the visiting pack had signed. The arrangement recognized responsibility by function instead of forcing Cedar Draw into traditional ranks. There were limits for temporary contacts, a review process for disputed changes, and protections for work already underway.Useful. Orderly. The kind of political result Austin would normally have studied for weaknesses before deciding whether it mattered to Bellamy Creek. He turned the page. The next lines stopped him. The young Alpha’s interest in Hallie had been real. Not rumor. Not the easy speculation people made whenever an unmarried Alpha spoke too often to an attractive woman. He had wanted her as his wife if she were ever free to choose. He had been willing to make her Luna. Austin read the paragraph again. His hand tightened on the paper. The mate bond pulled beneath his ribs, immediate and famili

Hallie had expected certainty to feel cleaner. It did not.The visiting party was gone. The agreement remained. Cedar Draw had returned to its ordinary noise, as if several days of negotiation and one impossible alternative had not rearranged anything inside her.By evening, Hallie found Grant in the common room with the signed copy open on his knee. He looked up when she approached.“Checking it again?”“Once.”“You’ve said that before.”“Then this is the last once.”Hallie sat beside him. There was enough space on the bench that she did not need to touch him. She did anyway. Her shoulder settled against his upper arm first. Then, after a moment, she let herself lean until part of her weight rested on him.Grant went still. Not tense. Careful.Hallie looked at the agreement instead of his face.“I meant what I told him.”Grant did not

Grant knew Hallie had made a choice before she told him what it was.She had crossed the yard after speaking to the young Alpha and taken Grant’s hand without hesitation. She had stayed beside him while the visiting party prepared to leave. That could have meant several things. Grant refused to decide which one. He waited until they were away from the others.Hallie found him near the common room after the last travel arrangements had been settled. The young Alpha’s people were still in Cedar Draw, but most of their things had already been carried out.Grant looked at her.“You don’t have to tell me anything before you’re ready.”“I know.”She stopped in front of him.“I told him no.”Relief hit so fast Grant almost hated it.It loosened something in his chest before he could stop it. Beneath that came satisfaction, warmer and sharper.Hallie had b

Hallie found him before the visiting party was ready to leave.People were already carrying the last of their things across the yard. The signed agreement had been packed with the other papers. Nothing political remained unfinished between the two packs. One thing remained. The young Alpha saw her coming and stepped away from the others without taking her anywhere private, a choice Hallie appreciated.“You said you would answer me,” he said.“I did.”He waited. Hallie had spent most of the night trying to find a version that would be kind without being false. There wasn’t one.So she started with the truth that made the answer hardest.“You are a good choice.”His expression did not change.“You’re respected. You listen. You don’t need me to explain why the work I was trained for matters. With you, I could walk into a role everyone already understands.”
