Hallie dies knowing exactly what it cost to spend her life waiting for the mate who chose power over her—then wakes up on the day he rejects her all over again. This time, when newly crowned Alpha Austin sacrifices their future for a political alliance, Hallie does the one thing no one expects: she walks away. And instead of begging fate for another chance, she heads for Cedar Draw—and the Alpha every respectable pack fears. Grant rules a territory built from rogues, exiles, survivors, and wolves no traditional pack wanted. He doesn’t promise to break Hallie’s mate bond. He offers her something far more dangerous: a marriage that will make her choice impossible for Austin—or anyone else—to ignore. What begins as protection becomes partnership. Partnership becomes desire. And as Hallie earns her place in Cedar Draw, she discovers that the feared Alpha beside her may be the first man who wants her without demanding that she become what destiny chose for her. But Austin is still her fated mate, and the bond between them refuses to disappear. With rival Alphas watching, old prejudices closing in, and a regional war drawing nearer, Hallie’s second life will force her to answer a question fate never allowed her to ask the first time: If destiny chooses one man for her, how much is she willing to risk for the man she chooses herself?

Chapter 1 — Second time

Hallie knew the room before she knew how she was breathing.

The narrow window stood open to the late-summer air. A folded jacket lay over the chair. Across from her, Austin Bellamy watched her with the same terrible restraint she remembered.

He looked exactly twenty-five, untouched by the war that had hardened the man in her memory.

Her fingers closed around the edge of the table.

This had already happened.

She had stood here once before at twenty-two, certain that becoming his mate meant becoming his Luna, certain all the years spent preparing for that future had led to this room. She remembered the words that came next.

She remembered what she had done with them.

Begged first.

Reasoned second.

Spent far too long afterward trying to become necessary enough to reverse a choice he had already made.

Austin took a breath. “Hallie.”

The mate bond answered his voice before she could stop it. Warmth pulled beneath her ribs, instinctive and humiliatingly familiar. Her wolf recognized him. Her body recognized him.

The bond was alive.

So was she.

The certainty hit harder than panic. This was not memory. The grain of the table pressed into her palm. Austin’s sandy-brown hair was still the shade she remembered from before everything went wrong. No war had carved exhaustion into his face.

She had come back.

And she had come back to this day.

“I need you to hear me before you answer,” he said.

In her first life, she had interrupted him.

This time, Hallie released the table and sat straighter.

“Go on.”

Something shifted in his expression. He had expected fear. Maybe tears.

He loved her. That was the cruelest part, and the one she had refused to understand the first time.

“I was confirmed as Alpha three days ago,” Austin said. “Bellamy Creek needs stronger political support. A formal betrothal with another Alpha’s daughter gives us an alliance and more security.”

Hallie remembered every justification.

She also remembered how desperately she had tried to defeat them.

“And I bring Bellamy Creek,” she said.

His silence answered first.

She had spent her life becoming exactly what Bellamy Creek expected from a future Luna.

None of it created a new alliance.

Austin’s jaw tightened. “You would be good for this pack.”

“But politically, I add nothing you don’t already have.”

“That isn’t what I said.”

“It’s what the decision means.”

Pain crossed his face, quick and real. The bond tugged again, trying to turn his pain into her problem.

Hallie let it hurt without moving.

Austin stepped closer. “I do love you.”

She had once built years of hope around those four words.

Now she heard the part that followed them.

“But I have to think as Alpha.”

There it was.

The man wanted her. The Alpha had found a more useful marriage.

Hallie folded her hands so he would not see them tremble.

Austin’s voice lowered. “I reject you as my future Luna and chosen partner.”

The words landed inside the bond like a blow.

For one sharp second, instinct took over. Her lungs locked. Every part of her wanted to reach for him, to demand that fate mean more than politics.

The bond did not break.

It remained between them, raw and living.

Austin stared at her as if he felt the same impossible continuity.

In her first life, that had been enough to keep her here.

Not again.

Hallie stood.

He tensed. “Hallie—”

“I accept your rejection.”

His face emptied.

She had imagined this moment differently after it was too late. In those old fantasies she had been colder, untouched.

The truth was simpler. It hurt. Her body still knew him as mate. Part of her still wanted the future she had expected.

But wanting it did not require her to repeat it.

Austin reached for her hand, then stopped before touching her. “We should talk about what happens now.”

“No.”

“You don’t have to decide anything today.”

She looked around the room that had once contained the beginning of years she now remembered.

If she stayed in Bellamy Creek, everything would still orbit him. Every gathering. Every decision. Every reminder that the man who loved her had chosen another future.

Hallie already knew where that road led.

She also knew one place that had remained neutral when war spread through the packs.

Cedar Draw.

In the first life, people at Bellamy Creek had called it rogue territory. Yet Cedar Draw had protected exiles when other places shut their borders.

It demanded that people contribute.

That suited her.

Hallie crossed to the chair and picked up her jacket.

Austin frowned. “Where are you going?”

“Out of Bellamy Creek.”

His disbelief almost pulled her backward more strongly than the bond did.

“Hallie, this is your home.”

“It was.”

She walked past him before her courage could become another conversation.

By the time she reached the boundary road, Bellamy Creek lay behind her and the ache of the mate bond still traveled with every mile.

Cedar Draw appealed to her for the work, not for any man who lived there.

She wanted work. A place she earned. A life built around something other than being chosen.

And there was only one territory she trusted to remain standing when the future began to burn.

Cedar Draw.

The territory ruled by the man everyone in her first life had called the Demon Alpha.
