Chapter 5 — Marry me

Grant found her after dinner.

Hallie had just finished washing the dust from her hands when he stopped outside the doorway and said, “I thought it through.”

He skipped the greeting.

The words came without softening.

Her stomach tightened anyway.

She followed him a short distance from the main buildings, far enough that they could speak without turning the conversation into public entertainment. The last light had thinned over Cedar Draw, leaving the ground gold-gray beneath their feet.

Grant faced her.

“Marry me.”

For several seconds, Hallie was certain she had misunderstood him.

Then she saw that he was entirely serious.

“You said there was a way to make my choice public.”

“This is it.”

A laugh almost escaped her, but nothing about his expression invited one.

Hallie stared at him.

“You’re proposing marriage as a political solution.”

“Yes.”

“That may be the least romantic proposal anyone has ever made.”

“I wasn’t aiming for romantic.”

That, absurdly, steadied her.

Grant stayed where he was, leaving the same measured space he had given her in every conversation since she arrived.

Hallie crossed her arms. “Explain.”

“A recognized marriage creates a status no one can pretend not to understand. You would still be Austin Bellamy’s fated mate.”

The bond seemed to answer the name with a faint ache.

Grant’s eyes stayed on her face.

“It won’t disappear,” he continued. “Marriage won’t cut it. Rejection didn’t cut it either.”

“I know.”

“What marriage changes is everything around the bond.”

Hallie frowned.

Grant spoke plainly, as if laying out terms rather than trying to persuade her.

“Not everyone meets a fated mate. People marry anyway. Those marriages are valid. Some mates reject each other and marry other people. The bond and marriage are different things.”

“So I could be Austin’s mate and your wife.”

“Yes.”

The simplicity of the answer unsettled her more than a speech would have.

Her whole life at Bellamy Creek had trained her to imagine mate and husband as the same man. Fate first, ceremony second, everything pointing in one direction.

She had treated Bellamy Creek’s expectation like a rule.

It wasn’t.

Biology had not made it one, either.

Hallie looked toward the nearest buildings.

“And if Austin decided the bond gave him the right to take me back?”

Grant’s expression hardened.

“Then he wouldn’t just be arguing with you about a mate bond. He would be challenging a marriage Cedar Draw recognizes.”

“And you.”

“And Cedar Draw.”

There was no boast in it.

Only consequence.

Hallie understood immediately why the distinction mattered. A rejected mate could be described as confused, emotional, temporarily estranged. A wife belonged to a legal and social structure other packs recognized whether they approved of it or not.

No one could call the marriage an accident of feeling.

It would be a decision.

Her decision.

But not only hers.

Hallie studied him. “Why would you do this?”

Grant was silent long enough that she knew he was choosing the answer carefully.

“Because Cedar Draw exists for people who were told someone else’s decision mattered more than theirs.”

“That sounds ideological.”

“It is.”

“And personally?”

His gaze held hers.

“I’m attracted to you.”

The words were so direct that Hallie forgot to breathe for half a second.

Grant’s face stayed serious.

The distance between them held.

“I don’t know you well enough to call it anything else,” he said. “I’m not going to pretend this is love. It isn’t.”

Hallie should have found that cold.

Instead she felt something loosen.

Austin had loved her and still rejected her.

Grant’s offer gave her choice a structure other people would have to acknowledge, even without love.

The contrast was dangerous in a completely different way.

“What would you expect from me?” she asked.

“As my wife?”

“Yes.”

“To mean it when you say yes.”

“That’s all?”

“For the decision? Yes.”

Hallie narrowed her eyes. “You’re thirty-eight, and you’re an Alpha.”

“I’m aware.”

“Also aware.”

“And you’re asking a twenty-two-year-old woman who arrived here after being rejected by her mate to marry you.”

“When you say it like that, it sounds questionable.”

“It is questionable.”

“Then question it.”

The answer stopped her.

Grant’s hands remained loose at his sides.

“If you say no, you keep your place here,” he said. “You keep your work. I don’t punish you for refusing me. I find another way to deal with whatever pressure comes.”

Hallie searched his face for the trap.

There wasn’t one she could see.

She looked down at her own hands.

The mate bond was still there.

Austin was still alive. Somewhere beyond Cedar Draw, the man fate had attached to her could probably still feel some echo of her through it.

Nothing Grant offered would erase that.

Maybe nothing ever would.

But Hallie had already spent one life treating the bond as an instruction.

She knew what obedience had cost.

If she married Grant, she would not become less biologically tied to Austin.

She would become something else at the same time.

A wife by choice.

Grant waited.

Grant left the silence alone.

His hands remained loose at his sides.

He let her reach the answer herself.

Hallie lifted her head.

“If we do this, I won’t pretend the bond is gone.”

“I wouldn’t ask you to.”

“And I’m not marrying you because I need another Alpha to tell me who I am.”

“Good.”

“I’m marrying you because I choose the marriage.”

Grant’s expression changed then.

There was no triumph in it.

Something quieter.

“Yes,” he said.

Hallie looked at the man everyone in her first life had feared.

Then she thought of Austin telling her he loved her before choosing another woman for what she could bring his pack.

The bond pulled faintly.

Hallie let it.

“I’ll marry you.”

Grant held out his hand.

He waited until she placed hers in it.

His fingers closed around hers once, warm and firm, then released.

The bond remained exactly as it had been, and she remained herself.

Yet the world had shifted anyway.

Austin Bellamy was still her fated mate.

Grant was the man she had just chosen to become her husband.

Hallie woke before Grant and stayed still for several seconds. His arm was heavy across her waist. The room was still gray with early light, quiet enough that she could hear his breathing and the faint sounds of Cedar Draw waking beyond the walls.Nothing about the morning looked different. That felt important.Hallie’s name had gained no title overnight. Grant was no easier for other packs to understand, and the mate bond with Austin still existed as a distant pull she could not erase simply because she had chosen something else. And the man beside her was still the man she had chosen. Hallie shifted carefully. Grant’s eyes opened.“You can move,” he said, voice rough with sleep.“I was trying not to wake you.”“Failed.”She smiled. His arm loosened immediately. Hallie noticed that too.Even now, after the night they had shared, he did not assume closeness gave him ownersh

By nightfall, Cedar Draw felt like itself again. The visiting party was gone. The signed agreement had been put away where Caleb could find it tomorrow. Someone had already complained about a stores count, someone else had left muddy boots where they did not belong, and dinner had ended with three separate arguments that had nothing to do with politics.Hallie had missed ordinary problems. She finished helping clear the long table and looked toward the corridor. Grant had disappeared sometime after the meal. Not avoiding her. She knew the difference now. Hallie found him in his room with his sleeves rolled to his forearms, folding a shirt that had no reason to require that much attention. She leaned against the doorframe.“You know that’s already folded.”Grant looked down at it.“So it is.”Hallie smiled. The room was quiet. For days, every meaningful conversation between them had seemed to

  • Reborn After Rejection: I Chose the Alpha Everyone Feared   Chapter 73 — He Heard

The first page of the report concerned the agreement. Austin read it carefully.Cedar Draw and the visiting pack had signed. The arrangement recognized responsibility by function instead of forcing Cedar Draw into traditional ranks. There were limits for temporary contacts, a review process for disputed changes, and protections for work already underway.Useful. Orderly. The kind of political result Austin would normally have studied for weaknesses before deciding whether it mattered to Bellamy Creek. He turned the page. The next lines stopped him. The young Alpha’s interest in Hallie had been real. Not rumor. Not the easy speculation people made whenever an unmarried Alpha spoke too often to an attractive woman. He had wanted her as his wife if she were ever free to choose. He had been willing to make her Luna. Austin read the paragraph again. His hand tightened on the paper. The mate bond pulled beneath his ribs, immediate and famili

Hallie had expected certainty to feel cleaner. It did not.The visiting party was gone. The agreement remained. Cedar Draw had returned to its ordinary noise, as if several days of negotiation and one impossible alternative had not rearranged anything inside her.By evening, Hallie found Grant in the common room with the signed copy open on his knee. He looked up when she approached.“Checking it again?”“Once.”“You’ve said that before.”“Then this is the last once.”Hallie sat beside him. There was enough space on the bench that she did not need to touch him. She did anyway. Her shoulder settled against his upper arm first. Then, after a moment, she let herself lean until part of her weight rested on him.Grant went still. Not tense. Careful.Hallie looked at the agreement instead of his face.“I meant what I told him.”Grant did not

Grant knew Hallie had made a choice before she told him what it was.She had crossed the yard after speaking to the young Alpha and taken Grant’s hand without hesitation. She had stayed beside him while the visiting party prepared to leave. That could have meant several things. Grant refused to decide which one. He waited until they were away from the others.Hallie found him near the common room after the last travel arrangements had been settled. The young Alpha’s people were still in Cedar Draw, but most of their things had already been carried out.Grant looked at her.“You don’t have to tell me anything before you’re ready.”“I know.”She stopped in front of him.“I told him no.”Relief hit so fast Grant almost hated it.It loosened something in his chest before he could stop it. Beneath that came satisfaction, warmer and sharper.Hallie had b

Hallie found him before the visiting party was ready to leave.People were already carrying the last of their things across the yard. The signed agreement had been packed with the other papers. Nothing political remained unfinished between the two packs. One thing remained. The young Alpha saw her coming and stepped away from the others without taking her anywhere private, a choice Hallie appreciated.“You said you would answer me,” he said.“I did.”He waited. Hallie had spent most of the night trying to find a version that would be kind without being false. There wasn’t one.So she started with the truth that made the answer hardest.“You are a good choice.”His expression did not change.“You’re respected. You listen. You don’t need me to explain why the work I was trained for matters. With you, I could walk into a role everyone already understands.”
