Chapter 6 — She chose him

Austin read the message twice.

Then a third time.

The words stayed the same.

Hallie had agreed to marry Grant.

For several seconds, Austin simply stared at the page.

It had to be wrong.

Cedar Draw was real enough. Hallie had gone there. He had already been forced to accept that much, even if every instinct in him still rejected the idea of her sleeping, eating, working, existing somewhere outside Bellamy Creek.

But marriage?

No.

She had known Grant for days.

Austin set the paper down and stood.

The mate bond remained exactly where it had always been.

Alive.

He could feel the quiet pull of it beneath his skin, a certainty older than argument. Hallie was his mate. Rejection had hurt it. Distance had stretched it. Neither had erased what she was to him.

That should have made the report impossible.

Instead it made it worse.

Austin crossed the room once, then turned back.

She was angry.

That was the explanation.

Angry enough to leave. Angry enough to choose the one place people at Bellamy Creek spoke about with lowered voices. Angry enough to stand beside Grant just to prove Austin no longer had the right to expect anything from her.

The thought should have reassured him.

It almost did.

Hallie had never been impulsive. Even when she was furious, she thought before she moved. She noticed consequences other people missed. She had been trained for years to understand how a choice would be read by a pack before she made it.

Austin stopped.

That was the problem.

If Hallie had agreed to marriage, she would know exactly what it meant.

He picked up the message again.

A recognized marriage.

This was neither a flirtation nor an affair, and not some dramatic attempt to make him jealous.

A status.

His throat tightened.

He had rejected her because Bellamy Creek needed more than love from its Alpha.

The decision had been brutal, but it had been rational. Another Alpha’s daughter brought alliance, support, security. Hallie was already Bellamy Creek. She could give him herself, her loyalty, her training, everything they had once expected to build together.

She could not give the pack another territory.

Austin had told himself she would understand eventually.

He had never expected immediate forgiveness.

He had never expected her to smile while he formalized a political betrothal with another woman.

But understand.

Hallie understood duty.

She understood better than almost anyone what it meant to put a pack ahead of private desire.

He had expected anger.

He had expected distance.

He had even expected her to refuse to speak to him for a while.

He had not expected her to create a life in which his decision no longer sat at the center.

The bond pulled again.

Austin pressed a hand flat against the desk.

She was still there.

Somewhere beyond Bellamy Creek, Hallie existed at the other end of that connection.

His mate.

The same woman who had looked at him and accepted his rejection without begging him to reconsider.

At the time, her calm had felt like shock.

Now he remembered the way she had picked up her jacket.

The way she had said she was leaving.

Not threatening to leave.

Leaving.

Austin exhaled sharply.

He had mistaken the absence of a fight for uncertainty.

That realization landed harder than the news itself.

If Hallie married Grant, other packs would not see her as a rejected mate waiting for her Alpha to reverse course.

They would see Grant’s wife.

The bond would still exist.

But it would no longer be the only fact anyone could point to.

Austin hated the thought with a force that made him step away from the desk.

He had chosen the political betrothal.

That had been his right as Alpha.

Hallie was making a choice of her own.

That should have been equally simple.

It was not.

Because rejecting her had meant giving up the future he had expected.

Losing her meant watching her build another one.

With someone else.

Grant.

Austin had met enough men like him to know reputation became distorted at a distance. Cedar Draw called itself a community. Other packs called it rogue territory. Grant was older, harder, and entirely outside the structure Hallie had been raised to understand.

There was no reason she should want him.

Unless wanting him was not the point.

Unless choosing him was.

Austin looked down at the message once more.

The word marriage seemed larger than everything around it.

He could wait.

He could tell himself Hallie would calm down.

He could assume she would remember what the bond meant and return before anything became permanent.

That was what he had been doing since she left.

Assuming the connection between them would eventually pull her back into the life he had already decided she would occupy.

His stomach turned.

What if she did not come back?

The question had not felt real until now.

Austin moved before he could talk himself out of it.

He left the room, crossed the hall, and gave the necessary orders for his absence without explaining more than he had to.

He was still Alpha of Bellamy Creek.

He still had obligations.

But he could fulfill them and go.

By the time he reached the road out of the territory, the late light had begun to fade.

Cedar Draw lay ahead.

Hallie lay ahead.

His mate.

A woman he had rejected.

A woman who had taken his rejection and built a future that no longer waited on him.

Austin tightened his grip on the wheel.

Only then did he understand the difference between letting Hallie go and Hallie choosing to belong somewhere else.

He drove toward Cedar Draw.

Austin found the same crew assigned to two jobs before noon.Four people stood beside the work board with tools in hand, each waiting for the other group to leave first. One note sent them to shore up a fence. Another sent them to clear the fallen branches from the path used by the supply carts. Both notes had been copied from the week before. Neither had been crossed out.It was not a disaster. The fence could wait another hour. The carts could use the longer way around. Still, the mistake sat on the board like a thumbprint. Somebody had seen the overlap before. Somebody had changed the notes, moved people, and made it look as if the work had always arranged itself.Hallie had done that.Austin scraped the old paper loose with his thumbnail and told two workers to take the path while the other two stayed with the fence. They obeyed without argument. They were not looking to him for a lesson. They were looking for the next instruction, and he gave it beca

The room did not become easier after people returned to the shelves.Hallie could still feel the argument in the way one worker chose the far side of a stack instead of passing close to her, and in the glance that went to Grant before it came to her. Nothing had been settled. Grant had only made it impossible for anyone to pretend the question belonged to him alone. He stood near the passage, speaking quietly to someone about the unstable board. He did not look back at Hallie for an answer she had not offered. The restraint left the air around her painfully open. For a moment, she wanted to walk out. She knew how easily anything useful she did could become another claim: Grant’s wife rearranging shelves, telling people where supplies belonged, making herself unavoidable until nobody could say no. Bellamy Creek had trained her to enter a room as if it had been waiting for her. Cedar Draw had no reason to welcome that training.Caleb came around the e

  • Reborn After Rejection: I Chose the Alpha Everyone Feared   Chapter 28 — Let Her Answer

Grant saw the conversation gather before anyone asked him to join it.A few people had remained near the shelves after Hallie settled the bundle. Their attention was fixed on her, but their bodies angled toward him. He knew that posture. It was the shape people made when they wanted an Alpha to turn an argument into an order.Hallie stood by the lower shelf with dust on her hands. The worker who had refused her first suggestion was still there too. Grant had watched her accept the no, ask what she had missed, and change the plan without making the man pay for correcting her.A loose board at the edge of the passage tipped under a worker’s heel. The bundle above it lurched toward the floor. Grant caught the side of it, set the board flat with his boot, and waited until the weight was steady again. The worker carried the bundle on without a word. The interruption lasted only a moment. It did not empty the room of its purpose.“You should

The worker led Hallie to the far end of the room without explaining on the way.Two dry bundles remained on the floor beside the shelves. The repair had freed space along the wall, but the open path had made the corner look larger than it was. One bundle had been set down where people could reach it. The other had been left where it kept the lower shelf from opening fully.“If we put that one against the wall,” Hallie said, “the passage stays clear and the shelf can open.”The worker did not reach for the bundle. “No.”The word was quiet. It still landed with the force of a door closing. For an instant, Hallie’s mind reached for the familiar responses: explain the reason, point to the clear path, prove that the bundle would be safer where she had chosen. Each one would have made the worker’s refusal sound like a delay instead of information.Grant stood several steps behind them, near the doorw

  • Reborn After Rejection: I Chose the Alpha Everyone Feared   Chapter 26 — Not Sent There

Hallie did not leave Cedar Draw’s answer behind her when she went back inside. It followed her in the changed pauses, in the way two workers lowered their voices when she crossed the room, and in the careful distance some people kept between her and the work that had once been simply work. The roof was repaired. The shelves were dry. None of that had made the room easier to stand in.Grant was at the table with Caleb, sorting the few things that still needed to be put away. Hallie stopped beside the open doorway instead of joining them. The place beside Grant was available. She could feel that without looking at him. She also knew what it would look like if she took it now.One of the workers noticed her hesitation. “You have something else to say?”Hallie looked at the people still in the room. Some had helped with the roof. Some had argued about the board. Some had done both. There was no single face to persuade.“Only thi

  • Reborn After Rejection: I Chose the Alpha Everyone Feared   Chapter 25 — Not A Luna

By morning, nobody had forgotten the word Luna. Hallie could tell by the way some conversations paused when she crossed the yard. She went to work anyway. Her assignment was inventory in the stores, followed by helping move a delivery that had arrived late the previous evening. Nothing about it was different from the work she had done before marrying Grant.Hallie was checking supply sheets when a woman from one of the repair crews appeared in the doorway.“Do you have a minute?”“For what?”“We have two jobs waiting on the same tools.”“Caleb knows?”“He’s with the unloading crew.”“Then he’ll decide when he gets back.”The woman frowned.“You could look.”Hallie almost said no. Yesterday’s argument had made usefulness itself complicated. Hallie looked at the woman’s face before answering.Thi
