Chapter 68 — The Agreement

The final review took less than an hour. That surprised Hallie more than anything else.

After days of arguing over responsibility, rank, authority, timing, and what happened when the two packs understood the same word differently, the last version of the agreement no longer seemed fragile. It had been tested too many times for that.

Hallie sat with Cedar Draw’s copy open in front of her. Across the table, the young Alpha read the same paragraph on his own copy. Grant stood beside Hallie, one hand resting near the top page.

Caleb had already confirmed the final contacts. What remained was not another negotiation but a last test: did both copies describe the same limits?

The young Alpha checked the section on practical changes. Hallie checked it with him.

Responsibility stayed attached to function rather than invented rank. A replacement had to be known before authority moved. Work already begun did not vanish because a correction was under review.

Grant challenged one line. The visitor reread another.

The room produced no new disagreement.

The young Alpha put down his pen. “I have no objection.”

“I have no objection.”

Hallie felt some of the tension leave her shoulders. There would still be problems once the agreement began. But Cedar Draw did not have to become a traditional pack before another pack would cooperate with it.

The young Alpha turned to the final section.

“My side will recognize Cedar Draw’s designated contacts for the responsibilities listed here.”

Hallie watched him read. He did not hesitate over phrasing that made no demand for Cedar Draw to produce a Luna.

The structure invented no second-in-command; recognition followed responsibility rather than title.

The young Alpha looked up.

“This is acceptable.”

Grant’s expression remained steady, but Hallie knew him well enough now to see the relief in the small drop of tension at his mouth.

“So is your side’s version,” Grant said.

The visitor slid both copies toward the middle.

“Then we have an agreement.”

The words were simple. Hallie stared at the pages anyway. Cedar Draw had negotiated with a recognized pack and reached terms that did not treat its structure as an inconvenience to be corrected.

The structure was accepted well enough to work with, rather than merely tolerated or excused.

Grant and the young Alpha signed.

Hallie checked the copies before closing Cedar Draw’s version and caught one missing mark beside a corrected sentence.

The young Alpha laughed under his breath and fixed it.

“Still checking?”

“Especially now.”

After that, there was nothing left to argue. The negotiation was finished.

A few Cedar Draw residents had gathered near the doorway by then. Members of the visiting party stood farther back, waiting for their Alpha.

The young Alpha turned toward them.

“We have terms.”

Questions came from both groups. The answer that mattered stayed the same: Cedar Draw would keep its own structure, and the other pack would honor the responsibilities named in the agreement.

Hallie answered one of them. The young Alpha confirmed it without qualification.

“That is exactly what we agreed.”

The public confirmation sent a small current through the people listening. Hallie felt something quieter than triumph.

Something steadier. What mattered was simpler. Cedar Draw had terms another pack would honor.

Grant stepped forward.

“Hallie is the reason several of those terms work.”

The room quieted. Hallie turned toward him. Grant did not touch her.

Did not place her beside him as anything. He looked at the people listening.

“She found the gap in the change process. She built the functional-contact structure with us. She kept us from accepting language that would have made the agreement easier by making Cedar Draw less accurate.”

Hallie’s throat tightened. Grant continued. The room had heard plenty about the agreement. This was the first time anyone had named her contribution without converting it into rank, marriage, or obligation. Hallie had wanted that kind of recognition for so long that receiving it without a title left her briefly unsure what to do with her hands.

“The result belongs to everyone who has to carry it out. But her work changed the result.”

Grant added no title, Luna designation, or claim that her value came from being his wife.

Grant left the work and the truth to stand on their own. Hallie looked at the young Alpha.

He seemed unsurprised.

“He’s right,” he said.

The young Alpha turned to his own people. The negotiation was over; departure could handle itself.

“You didn’t have to do that,” Hallie said quietly.

“I know.”

“Then why did you?”

Grant looked at the closed agreement in her hands.

“Because you did the work.” The simplicity of it landed harder than ceremony would have. Grant was feared outside Cedar Draw because people imagined the force he could use. Hallie had learned that some of his most consequential choices were the moments he refused to make himself the center.

He showed neither discomfort nor any need to make himself larger beside her.

Hallie felt something warm settle beneath her ribs. Around them, Cedar Draw was already treating the agreement as something real.

The young Alpha would leave with a signed arrangement his pack could defend, and Cedar Draw would keep its own structure. He was already speaking with one of his people about departure.

By morning, the agreement would no longer give him a reason to remain. If Hallie meant to answer what still existed between them, she had run out of politics to hide behind.

Hallie woke before Grant and stayed still for several seconds. His arm was heavy across her waist. The room was still gray with early light, quiet enough that she could hear his breathing and the faint sounds of Cedar Draw waking beyond the walls.Nothing about the morning looked different. That felt important.Hallie’s name had gained no title overnight. Grant was no easier for other packs to understand, and the mate bond with Austin still existed as a distant pull she could not erase simply because she had chosen something else. And the man beside her was still the man she had chosen. Hallie shifted carefully. Grant’s eyes opened.“You can move,” he said, voice rough with sleep.“I was trying not to wake you.”“Failed.”She smiled. His arm loosened immediately. Hallie noticed that too.Even now, after the night they had shared, he did not assume closeness gave him ownersh

By nightfall, Cedar Draw felt like itself again. The visiting party was gone. The signed agreement had been put away where Caleb could find it tomorrow. Someone had already complained about a stores count, someone else had left muddy boots where they did not belong, and dinner had ended with three separate arguments that had nothing to do with politics.Hallie had missed ordinary problems. She finished helping clear the long table and looked toward the corridor. Grant had disappeared sometime after the meal. Not avoiding her. She knew the difference now. Hallie found him in his room with his sleeves rolled to his forearms, folding a shirt that had no reason to require that much attention. She leaned against the doorframe.“You know that’s already folded.”Grant looked down at it.“So it is.”Hallie smiled. The room was quiet. For days, every meaningful conversation between them had seemed to

The first page of the report concerned the agreement. Austin read it carefully.Cedar Draw and the visiting pack had signed. The arrangement recognized responsibility by function instead of forcing Cedar Draw into traditional ranks. There were limits for temporary contacts, a review process for disputed changes, and protections for work already underway.Useful. Orderly. The kind of political result Austin would normally have studied for weaknesses before deciding whether it mattered to Bellamy Creek. He turned the page. The next lines stopped him. The young Alpha’s interest in Hallie had been real. Not rumor. Not the easy speculation people made whenever an unmarried Alpha spoke too often to an attractive woman. He had wanted her as his wife if she were ever free to choose. He had been willing to make her Luna. Austin read the paragraph again. His hand tightened on the paper. The mate bond pulled beneath his ribs, immediate and famili

Hallie had expected certainty to feel cleaner. It did not.The visiting party was gone. The agreement remained. Cedar Draw had returned to its ordinary noise, as if several days of negotiation and one impossible alternative had not rearranged anything inside her.By evening, Hallie found Grant in the common room with the signed copy open on his knee. He looked up when she approached.“Checking it again?”“Once.”“You’ve said that before.”“Then this is the last once.”Hallie sat beside him. There was enough space on the bench that she did not need to touch him. She did anyway. Her shoulder settled against his upper arm first. Then, after a moment, she let herself lean until part of her weight rested on him.Grant went still. Not tense. Careful.Hallie looked at the agreement instead of his face.“I meant what I told him.”Grant did not

Grant knew Hallie had made a choice before she told him what it was.She had crossed the yard after speaking to the young Alpha and taken Grant’s hand without hesitation. She had stayed beside him while the visiting party prepared to leave. That could have meant several things. Grant refused to decide which one. He waited until they were away from the others.Hallie found him near the common room after the last travel arrangements had been settled. The young Alpha’s people were still in Cedar Draw, but most of their things had already been carried out.Grant looked at her.“You don’t have to tell me anything before you’re ready.”“I know.”She stopped in front of him.“I told him no.”Relief hit so fast Grant almost hated it.It loosened something in his chest before he could stop it. Hallie found him before the visiting party was ready to leave.People were already carrying the last of their things across the yard. The signed agreement had been packed with the other papers. Nothing political remained unfinished between the two packs. One thing remained. The young Alpha saw her coming and stepped away from the others without taking her anywhere private, a choice Hallie appreciated.“You said you would answer me,” he said.“I did.”He waited. Hallie had spent most of the night trying to find a version that would be kind without being false. There wasn’t one.So she started with the truth that made the answer hardest.“You are a good choice.”His expression did not change.“You’re respected. You listen. You don’t need me to explain why the work I was trained for matters. With you, I could walk into a role everyone already understands.”
