1. THE ENEMY

PROLOGUE

~HEAVEN~

I jolted awake at the sound of the loud bells.

Warning bells!

We were under attack!

I quickly ran out of my bed and straight to my parents' room, they too were dashing out of their room, their expressions laced with panic.

“Heaven, go back to your room and stay there. Don't come out until we come get you.” Mom instructed as they both rushed down the staircase.

I however wasn't just going to sit back in my room this time. This was the third time our Pack was getting invaded, and back then I was too young and weak to fight back, but I have been training. I may not be up to eighteen yet, and without a wolf, but I can still fight.

I ran after my parents as they stepped out of the palace gates, and my legs froze at the scene that welcomed me.

It was chaotic. There was blood everywhere, some of our people had been injured, some killed, while the rest fought against the enemies with their life. Most buildings were engulfed in flames, while others had been reduced to ashes. The Blue Moon Pack that was once known for its rich and fertile lands was now nothing but ash and flames.

Dad shifted into his wolf form immediately and joined the fight while mom tried to help out the injured wolves.

I watched how she skillfully healed them with her powers and some returned to the battlefield, while others assisted her in gathering the injured fighters to a corner.

Everything was happening so fast and I tried my best to avoid getting crushed by the giant wolves that roamed our lands.

“Help me.” I heard a faint voice from the corner and turned around to see a young man lying on the ground. His leg had been caught between a boulder and he had a deep cut on his stomach.

I quickly rushed to him and crouched down on the ground. He stared at me with his piercing grey eyes while trying to apply pressure on his wound.

“You're hurt. Let me help you.” I said as I tried to push the boulder off but it was too heavy.

“Little girl, you shouldn't be here. Go, run as far as you can before it's too late.” He said to me and I looked up at him. His expression was serious as he stared at me with a warning gaze.

“I won't abandon my people. I'm not a weakling.” I responded boldly and with that, I summoned courage and tried lifting the boulder once more while the man wiggled underneath until he finally pulled his legs out.

“Thank you. Now go!” He ordered but I couldn't just leave him there like that.

“Stay still.” I said to him as I examined his body before placing my hands on his wound.

I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath like Mom taught me, and then I opened them again and channeled my energy to his body. My hands glowed on his body and his wounds started to heal. When I was finished, I removed my hands and stood up from the ground.

The man stared at me with a stunned expression and it was then I realized that he wasn't a member of our Pack. I had healed the enemy!

Every member of the Blue Moon Pack was aware of our special healing ability and mom warned me never to let any outsider find out about it, and yet I had just healed a member of the very same Pack that was trying to take over lands.

“Who are you?” The man asked as he slowly rose from the ground.

I took to my heels immediately as I tried to find mom. If he decided to capture me, I knew I wouldn't be able to handle him on my own. I felt his energy while healing him, he was no ordinary wolf.

“Mom!” I called out as I spotted her ahead, helping one of the injured guards.

She turned to me and her eyes widened in shock on seeing me outside.

“Heaven, what are you doing?! Get inside!” Mom yelled but at that very moment, a wolf charged at her in full speed.

“Mom, look out!” I yelled as I tried to run to her but I was suddenly yanked backwards, a tight grip on my waist as I struggled to break free.

“Mom!” I cried out as I watched the wolf devour my mother limb by limb. It felt like a knife had been plunged deep into my chest as my heart ached like never before. My tears blurred my vision and I kept trying to break free from the tight grip on my waist.

“You shouldn't be here. Leave.” I recognized that voice as the man I had healed and I felt my blood boil.

He was with them! He was one of them!

“Let me go!” I screamed as I scratched his hand with my nails while kicking the air. If only I could shift, I would have been able to take him down. But I knew it wouldn't be possible until my eighteenth birthday.

“Heaven!” I heard Dad's voice from our mindkink and I turned to see his wolf charging at the man. He tackled him to the ground and I was thrown against the walls from the force.

I winced as I got up from the ground, my eyes tearing up when I remembered that mom was no more.

“Heaven, get out of here.” Dad pleaded as he growled at the other wolves who had now surrounded him. I could feel his energy, it was weak, extremely weak.

He knew mom was dead and that's why his wolf had weakened but he was still holding out, trying to protect me.

“I won't leave you, dad.” I cried out.

My eyes scanned our surroundings, our people had fallen, we were surrounded and dad was outnumbered. He can't take them all.

“Just trust me, Heaven. Run!” Dad growled and I reluctantly took to my heels.

However, before I could get far enough, I heard the shrill growl of Dad's wolf and my tears came streaming down my face. I could feel his energy fading, he was hurt, he was dying and it was all my fault.

Mom died because of me, and now Dad too. My home was gone, and I was the last survivor of the Blue Moon Pack.

I suddenly felt a sharp blow land at my back, as though I had been hit by a wolf's paw as its claws made a deep cut on my back, which sent me crashing on the ground and the next second, I was surrounded by wolves.

My vision was getting blurry from the force of the attack and the last thing I saw was a man standing over me with a dagger. I noticed he had a fire tattoo on his arm and I shut my eyes the moment he raised his hand up, ready to strike me.

“Don't hurt her! She's not a shifter.” I heard the familiar voice of the man I had healed and I slowly opened my eyes to see him holding the hand of the man with the fire tattoo. They looked the same age and almost alike but the man with the fire tattoo had dark short hair and green eyes, while the other had grey eyes and shoulder length brown hair.

“Does it matter? She's one of them.” The man with the dagger responded as he freed his hand, ready to strike again.

“She's young, she's not a threat to anyone. Let her go.”

“Why are you so weak? She's our enemy?!” The man with the dagger growled.

“Then have her sent off to the slave traders. She's more useful to them alive than dead.” The other man responded and the man with the dagger let out a scoff.

“Do whatever you want. I'm out of here.” And with that, I was tied up and thrown into a carriage which housed other young non-shifters like myself but they weren't from my Pack. They all had different energies.

I felt too weak to try to escape, the pain in my chest felt as though my heart had been ripped out violently, but as much as I wanted to cry, I held it in.

I won't give up like this. I'll endure whatever it is they throw at me, and one day, when I'm finally strong enough, I'll make them all pay!
