Caelan reached Whitecliff's east gate as the first cart struck the closed bars from the inside.

Civilians crowded the east gate with children and wounded between them while vampire fire struck the outer wall. Caelan saw at once that opening the main bars would expose everyone pressed behind them. A smaller service door offered less room and less danger. He pointed to it and let the gate captain decide whether to use it.

“Open the passage,” Caelan said.

Lorelai saw the wrong signal before the man carrying it reached the crowded court. It came from the wrong place. That was enough.Children and exhausted civilians filled the space between carts while the stranger watched for the panic his signal was meant to create.Lorelai caught a real custodian’s sleeve. “Move the civilians without looking at him.”“He may run.”“Then let him run away from them.”She crossed the court with the recovered map under her arm and gave the stranger exactly what he wanted to notice: her attention, not the families slipping toward cover behind her.By the time he understood the crowd had thinned, Lorelai had already taken away the part of the trap that mattered most. The man followed. The false custodian followed Lorelai into the empty passage.“You have the wrong route,” he said.“I know.”His hand vanishe

The silence from Eve's convoy reached Karl as a line of empty lamps on the copied plan.He did not need the map to tell him what the absence meant. The true convoy had gone silent, and his first instinct was already pulling him toward Lorelai’s road. He stayed where she had asked him to stand. The lower gate shook beneath a second impact.Karl turned back to Greyhaven's corridor. Civilians were still crossing between the broken gate and the cart road, trapped in the narrow space where a shield line could protect them only if it stayed a line. The captains who had chosen to hold the evacuation lane waited for an order.“The corridor stays open,” Karl said. “Three shields wide. Civilians through the center. No one leaves the line to chase.”A captain looked toward the breached street. “They are falling back.”“Then they want us to follow. Hold the corridor.”He took the first positio

Lorelai laid Valerian’s stolen map beside the confirmation naming the Ash Refuge.Eve stood under the broken arch in a travel cloak, watching the road that had already been compromised.“If we use the route he expects, he hunts the route,” Eve said.“If we do not, he hunts the absence,” Lorelai answered. There was no arrangement clever enough to make pursuit disappear. Lorelai chose something simpler: deny Valerian certainty. What mattered about the decoy was not how it was built, only that Eve would not be where the stolen map promised.Eve caught Lorelai’s sleeve before leaving. “And the evidence?”“It does not travel as your shadow.”Eve searched her face, then nodded. She had spent too long being treated as the container for other people’s secrets. Protection that made her indispensable to the case would only build another cage around her.“Good,”

If we open it, they follow the civilians through.”Caelan pointed to the smaller service door. “Get the civilians through without turning the whole gate into a target.”The captain chose the smaller door. Once it opened, Caelan stopped thinking about command and started lifting people. He carried a burned woman through first, then went back into the smoke because too many frightened bodies still stoo

Valerian crossed the length of Whitecliff's war room without looking at the door. The maps had been weighted with daggers, cups, and a broken piece of red stone from the outer wall. Greyhaven's lower gate was marked with a black pin. Avelune's Node carried three white pins, one for each route that had failed to close. Valerian moved the nearest white pin half an inch toward the river and left it there. The room waited for him to make the movement mean something. That was why he had not dismissed the officers.Valerian’s dispatch table still held the terms he had sent Lorelai: evacuation offered as mercy, protection offered only after surrender. The papers looked orderly enough to disguise the threat if no one read them together.“This goes to her,” he said. The clerk did not reach for it. “The bearer returned from Avelune. The letter was burned.”The unopened demand still bore his red seal. Lorelai had refused i

The first false seal came loose beneath Lorelai's thumb with a sound like wet paper tearing.Water had climbed the steps below Avelune’s map table, carrying the metallic smell of the damaged Node. Two custodians fought the leak while Lorelai kept the evacuation map from sliding into the water.“That flow reaches the shelters,” a custodian warned. The poison reached them as a metallic smell under the rising water. Lorelai went down into the cold beside the custodians because the shelter branch was already threatened. For several brutal minutes the current shoved at her knees and pain flashed through the old injury in her hand. She did not need to understand every hidden channel; she needed the poisoned flow kept away from the people behind those doors.A custodian caught her elbow when her boot slipped. By the time Lorelai climbed back onto the steps, soaked and shaking, the dark surge was moving away from the shelters. The clean result c
