Chapter 3

Author: Popcorn Pop
On the day of the math competition, Dad never showed up. He called to say his truck had broken down on the highway, and he couldn't get back in time.

However, when I walked out of the competition hall, I spotted his scooter parked across the street. Daniel was standing next to him, clutching a brand-new basketball. Meanwhile, Dad crouched beside him, seemingly trying to comfort him with a cake.

"Come on, don't be mad. I didn't mean to forget that it's been a whole month since you transferred schools."

Daniel turned his face away. "Then, you have to spend the whole day with me today."

"Okay. I'll spend the whole day with you," Dad agreed without hesitation.

When he turned around and saw me, the smile froze on his face.

"Nate?"

He instinctively tried to hide the cake behind his back. "Didn't you say you'd be done with your competition this afternoon?"

"I finished early."

"How'd it go?" he asked.

"Pretty well."

Dad visibly relaxed and took a couple of steps toward me, but before he could say anything else, Daniel called out, "Dad, my foot hurts."

Dad stopped in his tracks. A second later, he turned around and went straight back to Daniel.

"Take the bus home. I'll make you something good for dinner tonight, and we can celebrate your results then."

My gaze fell on the writing on the cake. "Happy One-Month Anniversary of Your School Transfer, Danny!"

Apparently, even something like that was worth celebrating.

"Okay."

I turned and walked away.

…

The results were announced three days later, and I had won first place in the entire province. I also won the 8,000-dollar cash prize. Westbrook High School even handed me my admission letter on the spot.

Eleanor was so excited that tears welled up in her eyes.

"Nate, your dad is going to lose his mind with happiness when he hears the news!"

I tucked the prize money deep into my backpack. "I haven't told him yet."

"This is huge! You need to tell him right away!" she exclaimed, barely able to contain her excitement.

I called Dad, but the phone rang for so long that I eventually gave up. Half an hour later, he sent me a voice message, with Daniel's nonstop screaming audible in the background.

"Nate, Danny got into an argument with one of his classmates, and I'm dealing with it right now. If it's important, we'll talk tonight."

I didn't reply.

After school, I went straight to the bus station and bought a ticket to the city for 4:00 pm tomorrow.

"One ticket to the city for tomorrow at 4:00 pm," I told the ticket agent.

He handed me the ticket and asked, "Traveling alone?"

"Yes."

"Do your parents know?" he asked curiously.

I took the ticket and offered him a faint smile. "They will soon."

…

That evening, Dad came home with Daniel, who was clutching a brand-new tablet. His eyes were red, and his jaw was clenched.

When Dad saw me, he seemed to finally remember my phone call from earlier.

"What did you want to tell me?"

I hid my admission letter behind my back. "My school is holding an awards ceremony tomorrow."

Dad immediately smacked his forehead. "Right! I remember now. Is your mom coming?"

"No."

He let out a sigh of relief. "Then, I'll go. I'm not taking any deliveries tomorrow. Hell, the whole world could come crashing down, and I'd still be there."

Daniel suddenly spoke up. "Tomorrow is my school's parent-teacher conference, too."

Dad froze. "Didn't you say you didn't want your parents to come?"

Daniel lowered his head and fiddled with his tablet. "Whatever. It's not like what happens at my school matters as much as Nate's stuff."

Dad fell silent.

I studied his face before asking, "Dad, which one are you actually going to?"

"Of course, I'm going to yours," he answered quickly, though he couldn't bring himself to look at Daniel.

I nodded. "Okay."

This was the last chance I was willing to give him.

If he showed up, I'd show him my admission letter. However, if he didn't…

My fingers brushed the bus ticket in my pocket.

4:00 p.m. Tomorrow.

After that, he wouldn't have to choose between us anymore.

Three years later, I was admitted to Kingsley University with the highest science-track score in the entire city. On the day the results were announced, reporters crowded the school gates, eager to cover the news. Eleanor threw her arms around me, crying even harder than I was. "You did it, kid. I'm so proud of you."I smiled and gently wiped away her tears. "Come on, Ms. Lawson. We promised we wouldn't cry." Over the past three years, Dad had traveled to the city every month. He no longer asked to see me. Instead, he handed my living expenses to Eleanor and stood outside the school gates for a few minutes, hoping to catch a glimpse of me. I hadn't touched a single cent of the money. It was all still sitting in the same bank account. Mom had come to see me many times, too. She had memorized my birthday, learned the name of my medication, and even earned a first-aid certification. Every year on June 29, she brought me a birthday cake. I never accepted it once.It wasn't be

Mom refused to sign the consent form allowing me to attend boarding school for the long term. Instead, she hired a lawyer and demanded that the school release me into her custody. When Dad heard what was happening, he rushed to the school as well. The moment the two of them met in the conference room, they launched into a heated argument. "He's barely been living with you, and you've already driven him to run away from home!" Mom snapped."That's still better than living with you!" Dad shot back. "You can't even remember his birthday! What gives you the right to criticize me?" "When he has an asthma attack, do you even know where his medication is?""And what about you? Someone crushed his medication, and you still told him to be the bigger person!" I sat quietly to the side, listening as they tore into each other. Finally, the lawyer interrupted them. "Nathan, which parent would you prefer to live with?" Both of them turned to look at me. Mom immediately seized the op

A week later, the school held its scholarship awards ceremony, which a crew from the local TV station had come to cover. Mom arrived an hour early, carrying a brand-new tracksuit and a pair of sneakers. She stopped me at the entrance to the backstage area and held them out to me. "Nate, go change into these. The reporters will be taking pictures, and your school uniform looks so worn out." I didn't take them. Looking slightly embarrassed, she softened her voice. "I bought them especially for you. I made sure to get your size."I glanced at the sneakers and immediately noticed the problem. They were a size 7, but I wore a size 9. "They're too small." Mom looked down at the shoes, her expression stiffening. "The sales associate must have given me the wrong size," she explained. "Those are Justin's size, aren't they?" Her lips parted as if she wanted to say something, but she didn't deny it.I walked past her without another word and headed straight into the auditorium

Even after the paperwork was finalized, Dad didn't leave the city right away. He spent the entire day sitting outside the school gates, unable to bring himself to go home. It wasn't until Eleanor came outside that he finally approached her. "Is Nate doing okay in there?" Eleanor glanced at him before answering, "He's quiet and independent. When the dorm supervisor gave him his bedsheets, the first thing he asked was how much they cost. When the cafeteria offered him financial assistance, he said he'd pay it back someday." Dad's eyes immediately reddened. "He wasn't like this when he was little," he murmured. "He used to be so attached to me." Eleanor's voice remained calm. "Children don't suddenly stop wanting to be close to their parents. They just learn that clinging to someone won't change anything."…Dad went home alone. When he opened the front door, he heard Daniel talking on the phone in the living room. Daniel hadn't noticed him come in, and there was humor in

The next morning, I was called to the principal's office, where Dad was already waiting for me. He hadn't slept all night. His eyes were bloodshot, and his jacket was still splattered with mud from his long scooter ride to the city. The moment he saw me, he sprang to his feet. "Nate." I stopped in the doorway, making no move to approach him. He forced a smile, trying to sound casual. "Let's go home. I'm sorry about what happened yesterday."You can be mad at me. You can even yell at me," he continued anxiously. "But how could you come all the way here by yourself?" I walked over to the desk and placed my transfer confirmation form in front of him. "I didn't run away. I came here to go to school." Dad grew increasingly agitated. "Even so, you should've discussed this with your family first. You're only 15! What if your asthma acts up while you're living so far away? Who's going to take care of you?"I looked him straight in the eye. "So, you know I have asthma now?"

By the time the bus arrived in the city, night had fallen. Eleanor was waiting for me just outside the station. When she saw me standing there with nothing but an old backpack, she froze for a moment. "Where's the rest of your luggage?" "This is everything," I answered truthfully. She glanced at me but didn't press for an explanation. Instead, she reached over and took my trophy. "Your dorm room is all set. The school can lend you some necessities until you get settled." Then, she looked me in the eye and said gently, "Nathan, remember this. You earned your place here through your own hard work. You don't owe anyone anything." My nose stung, and I quietly nodded. …Meanwhile, my father returned home carrying two cartons of ice cream. The chocolate one had already started to melt. He knocked on my bedroom door several times, but when I didn't answer, he pushed it open. The moment he stepped inside, he noticed that half the clothes in my wardrobe were gone. My textbook
