Chapter 4

Author: Popcorn Pop
The awards ceremony began at 9:00 am, and the seat in the middle of the front row remained empty.

At 9:20 am, Dad sent me a message. "Danny got into a fight with someone at school. I'll come as soon as I get things sorted out."

At 9:40 am, the principal called my name. "First place in the provincial math competition goes to Nathan Reynolds!"

I walked onto the stage to thunderous applause. Eleanor handed me the trophy, then leaned closer and quietly asked, "Where's your dad?"

I glanced at the empty seat in the front row.

"He's not coming."

At 10:00 am, another message from Dad appeared on my phone.

"The other kid's parents won't let this go. Nate, you're the mature one. Don't hold it against Danny."

I stared at the message for a moment before turning off my phone.

…

After signing the enrollment confirmation for Westbrook High School, I didn't bother returning to my classroom. Instead, I went straight home.

The front gate was open, and a table laden with dishes had been set up inside. Daniel sat on the couch with a Band-Aid on his elbow. He was unboxing a new phone while Dad sat beside him, helping him install the SIM card.

"This is the last time I'm replacing your phone," Dad warned. "Don't get into any more fights."

"But he was the one who taunted me for not having a dad!"

"That's enough." Dad gently ruffled his hair. "If anyone says that again, tell your teacher. Don't worry. I've got your back."

I stood in the doorway, watching them.

When Dad finally looked up and saw me, the SIM card slipped from his fingers and fell to the floor.

"Nate?"

His eyes darted to the clock on the wall, and all the color drained from his face.

"The awards ceremony…"

"It's over."

"I was going to be there," he explained, scrambling to his feet. "But Danny got into a fight, and the other family insisted we pay for a new phone. I couldn't just leave them to deal with it alone."

Daniel immediately raised his arm. "Nate, look. I'm hurt."

The wound beneath his Band-Aid hadn't even bled through.

Dad followed my gaze and noticed it. His voice grew quieter. "It might not be serious, but he's still hurt. His biological father is gone, and I promised I'd protect him."

I placed my trophy on the table.

"What about the promises you made to me?"

Dad went rigid.

He'd promised to pick me up from school. He'd promised to buy me gloves. He'd promised he wouldn't forget about me anymore. He'd also promised he'd be there today, no matter what.

He hadn't kept a single one of those promises.

"Nate, please don't be like this." His eyes reddened. "I know I've hurt you. Once Danny settles in, I'll make it up to you. I promise."

"How long will that take?"

"What?"

"How long until he settles in?" I looked him straight in the eye. "A day? A month? Or the rest of my life?"

Dad opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Claire walked out of the kitchen, looking displeased.

"Do you really have to make a scene today? Your dad already has enough on his plate. You're the older brother. Can't you just be a little more understanding?"

I smiled. "Sure. I won't make a fuss anymore."

Then, I went back to my room and slung the backpack I'd packed long ago over my shoulders. I took only my admission letter, my prize money, and my asthma inhaler. Nothing else.

When I walked out, Dad was in the kitchen cutting the cake, while Daniel stood beside him, insisting on getting the slice with the chocolate plaque.

Neither of them even noticed me leave.

At 4:00 pm that day, the bus pulled out of the station right on schedule, and my phone wouldn't stop vibrating.

Dad called me 17 times.

His final message read, "Nate, I saved you a piece of cake. Where did you go?"

I didn't reply. Instead, I pulled out my SIM card and snapped it in half.

Outside the window, the town slowly faded into the distance, growing smaller and smaller until it was little more than a speck behind me.

This time, Dad hadn't lost me. I was the one who had chosen to leave him behind.

Three years later, I was admitted to Kingsley University with the highest science-track score in the entire city. On the day the results were announced, reporters crowded the school gates, eager to cover the news. Eleanor threw her arms around me, crying even harder than I was. "You did it, kid. I'm so proud of you."I smiled and gently wiped away her tears. "Come on, Ms. Lawson. We promised we wouldn't cry." Over the past three years, Dad had traveled to the city every month. He no longer asked to see me. Instead, he handed my living expenses to Eleanor and stood outside the school gates for a few minutes, hoping to catch a glimpse of me. I hadn't touched a single cent of the money. It was all still sitting in the same bank account. Mom had come to see me many times, too. She had memorized my birthday, learned the name of my medication, and even earned a first-aid certification. Every year on June 29, she brought me a birthday cake. I never accepted it once.It wasn't be

Mom refused to sign the consent form allowing me to attend boarding school for the long term. Instead, she hired a lawyer and demanded that the school release me into her custody. When Dad heard what was happening, he rushed to the school as well. The moment the two of them met in the conference room, they launched into a heated argument. "He's barely been living with you, and you've already driven him to run away from home!" Mom snapped."That's still better than living with you!" Dad shot back. "You can't even remember his birthday! What gives you the right to criticize me?" "When he has an asthma attack, do you even know where his medication is?""And what about you? Someone crushed his medication, and you still told him to be the bigger person!" I sat quietly to the side, listening as they tore into each other. Finally, the lawyer interrupted them. "Nathan, which parent would you prefer to live with?" Both of them turned to look at me. Mom immediately seized the op

A week later, the school held its scholarship awards ceremony, which a crew from the local TV station had come to cover. Mom arrived an hour early, carrying a brand-new tracksuit and a pair of sneakers. She stopped me at the entrance to the backstage area and held them out to me. "Nate, go change into these. The reporters will be taking pictures, and your school uniform looks so worn out." I didn't take them. Looking slightly embarrassed, she softened her voice. "I bought them especially for you. I made sure to get your size."I glanced at the sneakers and immediately noticed the problem. They were a size 7, but I wore a size 9. "They're too small." Mom looked down at the shoes, her expression stiffening. "The sales associate must have given me the wrong size," she explained. "Those are Justin's size, aren't they?" Her lips parted as if she wanted to say something, but she didn't deny it.I walked past her without another word and headed straight into the auditorium

Even after the paperwork was finalized, Dad didn't leave the city right away. He spent the entire day sitting outside the school gates, unable to bring himself to go home. It wasn't until Eleanor came outside that he finally approached her. "Is Nate doing okay in there?" Eleanor glanced at him before answering, "He's quiet and independent. When the dorm supervisor gave him his bedsheets, the first thing he asked was how much they cost. When the cafeteria offered him financial assistance, he said he'd pay it back someday." Dad's eyes immediately reddened. "He wasn't like this when he was little," he murmured. "He used to be so attached to me." Eleanor's voice remained calm. "Children don't suddenly stop wanting to be close to their parents. They just learn that clinging to someone won't change anything."…Dad went home alone. When he opened the front door, he heard Daniel talking on the phone in the living room. Daniel hadn't noticed him come in, and there was humor in

The next morning, I was called to the principal's office, where Dad was already waiting for me. He hadn't slept all night. His eyes were bloodshot, and his jacket was still splattered with mud from his long scooter ride to the city. The moment he saw me, he sprang to his feet. "Nate." I stopped in the doorway, making no move to approach him. He forced a smile, trying to sound casual. "Let's go home. I'm sorry about what happened yesterday."You can be mad at me. You can even yell at me," he continued anxiously. "But how could you come all the way here by yourself?" I walked over to the desk and placed my transfer confirmation form in front of him. "I didn't run away. I came here to go to school." Dad grew increasingly agitated. "Even so, you should've discussed this with your family first. You're only 15! What if your asthma acts up while you're living so far away? Who's going to take care of you?"I looked him straight in the eye. "So, you know I have asthma now?"

  • Reborn Between Two Homes, Belonging to None   Chapter 5

By the time the bus arrived in the city, night had fallen. Eleanor was waiting for me just outside the station. When she saw me standing there with nothing but an old backpack, she froze for a moment. "Where's the rest of your luggage?" "This is everything," I answered truthfully. She glanced at me but didn't press for an explanation. Instead, she reached over and took my trophy. "Your dorm room is all set. The school can lend you some necessities until you get settled." Then, she looked me in the eye and said gently, "Nathan, remember this. You earned your place here through your own hard work. You don't owe anyone anything." My nose stung, and I quietly nodded. …Meanwhile, my father returned home carrying two cartons of ice cream. The chocolate one had already started to melt. He knocked on my bedroom door several times, but when I didn't answer, he pushed it open. The moment he stepped inside, he noticed that half the clothes in my wardrobe were gone. My textbook
