Chapter 3

Author: Lotus
I was just about to say that Cassiano was indeed the one I intended to marry when I remembered what Papa had told me.

"Cassiano is currently dealing with something and will only be back in three days. Before he returns, don't tell anyone about the engagement. I don't want anything to go wrong."

Papa had looked grave when saying that. In our world, "dealing with something" generally came with bloodshed.

In any case, the engagement was set. I wasn't in a rush to announce anything.

I'd never spent much time with Cassiano. In my previous life, even after marrying Dario, I'd barely ever seen Cassiano. His own father, Don Morandi, didn't dare to get close to him, yet he needed him.

Cassiano lived in the annex tucked in the deepest corner of the Morandi estate. When I occasionally ran into him in the hallways, he would just silently step aside to let me pass.

Then came the day I'd died. After Dario had given our enemies the intel, they'd burst in through the doors and ambushed us. Papa had collapsed in a pool of his blood after being shot thrice, and someone had grabbed me by the hair, pinning me to the floor.

That was when Cassiano had emerged from the darkness. He'd given Dario a shot straight to the head, then scooped me up and ran out. I'd already been on the brink then.

Ultimately, he'd been one step too late. As I'd died in the arms of this man, who'd been raised like a beast in that fighting pit, I'd felt him shaking all over.

In this life, I swore to make sure he lived out the rest of his life safe and sound.

At that thought, I suppressed my roiling emotions and gave Dario a cold smile. "You'll find out soon enough."

I turned and walked away.

When the party ended, Lina came running after me. She jogged up to me, panting slightly from the exertion. Her white dress fluttered in the wind, making her look like a fragile little flower.

She held up her left hand and turned it under the lights, making the snake-shaped ring on her finger gleam coldly. "Ms. Vito, Dario said that even though he'll marry you, I'm the only one he'll ever truly consider his wife."

She smiled and continued softly, "I'm the only one he'll ever buy rings for in this lifetime."

I patted her on the shoulder. "Don't be so jumpy, Lina. If you and Dario do end up getting married, I'll make sure to attend the wedding. I'll even prepare a huge gift."

Lina froze, a hint of disbelief flashing in her eyes. Then, she smiled, her timid expression fading away to reveal the disdain hidden beneath. "You can drop the act, Ms. Vito. No way you can let go of Dario after pursuing him for so many years. Not that it matters—I'm the only one he loves."

I nodded and turned away, getting into the car. I didn't care whether or not she believed me. I just wanted to watch the show that was about to be put on—would Dario still be so devoted to her when he lost access to the Vito family's resources and Papa's protection?

For the next three days, I kept busy picking out the things needed for my engagement to Cassiano. I even sent people to find out his measurements. He was incredibly tall and broad-shouldered; regular boutiques didn't carry tuxedos that fit him, so I had to get one custom-made.

And it was also during these three days that Lina became oddly active on her social media. She updated it at least three or four times a day.

Breakfast with Dario, winery dates with him, enjoying wine before the fireplace with him… Her latest update showed her grilling steaks in the kitchen, wearing an apron. It was captioned, "Cooking for my beloved is the most blissful thing in the world."

The comments were envious.

I was about to lock my phone when Lina texted me. "Ms. Vito, Dario hasn't left my side for the past three days. He told me he's never been happier. I'm so thankful you gave him to me."

She even sent me a photo of herself smiling while holding up a steak.

I stared at her smile for five seconds. At my wedding in my previous life, she'd walked into the church wearing that same smile. She'd worn a white dress that showed off her baby bump, and her smile had slowly turned to grief and tears.

All 300 guests had turned their gazes from her to me, and then to Dario. I would never forget the suffocating atmosphere of that day, as well as how Dario had killed my entire family for her dead baby.

I took a few deep breaths before replying to Lina. "Enjoy it while you can. I hope you can still feel so blissful when my family kicks your father out."

Then, I blocked her number.

Less than three minutes later, Dario called me. "What the hell is wrong with you, Cecilia? Lina is just a regular young woman, and her father has worked tirelessly for your family for 20 years. Why did you threaten her?

"She's just helping you take care of me. Do you know how upset and how badly she's crying now? Get the hell over here and apologize to her in person!" His tone was beyond icy, his rage barely in check.

He was the same as he'd been in my previous life, always siding with Lina and thinking that I'd bullied her. But in this life, there was a hint of something else in his tone, concealed beneath his rage—restlessness.

After all, my behavior had once again gone beyond his expectations. He thought giving me the cold shoulder for the past three days would've driven me mad with jealousy and that I would've sought him out already. Yet not only had I not gone to him, but I'd even threatened Lina.

I leaned against the leather backseat of my car and laughed. "Sure thing. I'm already on my way to the Morandi estate."

Dario sounded smug on the other end of the line. "At least you still have some sense in you. Bring a box of macarons on your way here. Lina likes them."

"I don't have time for that. I'm too busy meeting my fiance." With that, I hung up.

Cassiano was returning on this day.

Dario was locked up for three days. On the fourth day, I went to Cassiano's villa, wanting to discuss the wedding with him. He wasn't around, but one of the drawers in his room was half open.I walked over to close it for him. When I looked down, I was taken aback. The drawer was stuffed full of things, mostly newspaper clippings that were all about me. There were reports of me attending charity galas, photos of me accompanying Papa to chamber of commerce events, and even a candid shot from my 16th birthday party. There were many more photos. Me watering flowers in the garden, sitting in the car and staring out the window, spacing out on the balcony… Every single one had been taken from a distance and in secret.Dates were written on the back. The earliest one was from the year Cassiano had been brought back home.My hands started to shake. It turned out he hadn't come to my rescue in my previous life on impulse. That decision had been made out of love that he'd never once put int

After we came back from the fighting ring, Cassiano stopped disappearing.I had Papa's private doctor come to the villa to treat Cassiano's wounds. When the doctor came out, he looked grim. He said Cassiano's body was covered in overlapping injuries, new and old, and that some of his bones had been broken more than once. They'd healed badly."Can he be treated?" I asked."Yes, but it'll take time," the doctor answered. "Some of the old injuries may need surgery again.""Then treat them. All of them."…In the days that followed, I went to the villa every day. Sometimes I brought food, sometimes supplements. Sometimes, I just sat across from Cassiano and read.He was very uncomfortable at first. For the first few days, he was tense almost the entire time, but slowly, he started to relax.Once, I fell asleep while reading some documents. When I woke up, I saw his jacket draped over me. He was sitting across from me with a book in his hand, pretending to read. The book was upside

Three days after the engagement party, Cassiano disappeared. I went to his villa to look for him, but only an old butler was there. He looked troubled. "Mr. Cassiano went out last night. He didn't say where.""Does he do that a lot?"The butler nodded. "Every so often, he just vanishes for a few days. When he comes back, he has new injuries. I've asked, but he won't tell me anything."My heart sank.Papa sent his people to investigate, and they came back with answers that very night. Cassiano had gone to an underground fighting pit. There were no rules or protective gear there. The fight went on until one party could no longer get up.The people who entered were either desperate or had nothing left to lose. Cassiano wasn't short on money, so what was he doing in a place like that?I went straight there to look for him.The air in the fighting pit was thick with the smell of blood, sweat, and cheap alcohol. Dozens of people crowded around an iron cage, screaming and waving wads

The engagement party was set for a week later. 300 invitations were sent out from the Vito estate, and soon the whole circle knew that the Vito family's Principessa was going to marry the "lunatic" of the Morandi family.Once the news got out, gossip broke out everywhere."She chased Dario for six years, and now she's picking that freak they dragged out of the fighting pit? She's clearly just being spiteful.""Three months. I'm betting this marriage doesn't last more than three months.""Knowing what Cassiano is like, I wouldn't be surprised if he snaps one day and hits Cecilia."…On the day of the party, I walked into the hall with my arm linked through Cassiano's.He was wearing the custom black suit I had made for him, his hair slicked back to show off his chiseled face. The way he moved was completely different from everyone else—every step was firm, and he kept his weight low. He was like a predator prowling through unfamiliar territory. As we passed, the whispers in the

The day after the engagement was confirmed, I went to where Cassiano lived. The Morandi estate was huge, with beautifully manicured gardens. But Cassiano lived in a villa furthest from the main wing. No one took care of that place; the weeds grew up to my knees. The maid leading the way stopped halfway and refused to go any further. Her face went pale as she pointed at the narrow path ahead. "Ms. Vito, Mr. Cassiano… doesn't like strangers getting close. I can only take you this far."I didn't push her. I walked on alone. The door of the villa wasn't locked. When I pushed it open, I saw there was almost no furniture inside. The light was dim, and there was a faint smell of disinfectant in the air."Who's there?"A low voice came from the top of the stairs. I looked up and saw Cassiano standing in the shadows on the second floor. He was wearing black slacks and a loose white T-shirt. He was barefoot, and his hair was slightly tousled. He looked like he'd just woken up.When he saw

Dario's eyes widened. He blurted out without thinking, "Cecilia, I'm the one you're supposed to marry!"No one paid him any attention. He clenched his jaw, a wild edge creeping into his smile. "Fine, I admit your little stunt worked. Now, cut it out."He reached out to grab my wrist, but Cassiano stepped in front of me at once. His height alone made his presence downright oppressive. He said icily, "She's my fiancee."Dario's hand froze in midair, then slowly dropped. Unwilling to accept this change, he turned to both our parents. "Father, Don Vito, there has to be some mistake. Cecilia has chased after me for six years. Everyone knows the engagement is between her and me—""Dario," Papa said, cutting him off. His voice wasn't loud, but it still made everyone fall silent."The person meant for this engagement is the one my daughter chooses herself." He glanced at Cassiano, then at me. "And she chose Cassiano."Dario refused to give up and stared stubbornly at Don Morandi. "Father
