Chapter 1

مؤلف: Perfect Timing
"Calista, what is wrong with you?" Madison Walker shot to her feet.

The entire class of over 40 students turned to look at us.

Madison clutched her lower abdomen, her eyes welling up with tears. "It's fine if you don't want to give me one. Did you really have to broadcast it to the whole room?"

I snapped the cap back onto my pen, my expression completely impassive. "Periods are natural. There's nothing to be ashamed of. You were too embarrassed to ask loudly, so I helped you out."

My response left her speechless.

A few students nearby lowered their heads to hide their laughter, while others whispered that I was too blunt.

Madison glared at me. "Forget it."

Hunched over in pain, she grabbed her bag and walked out.

After class, the class group chat quickly blew up with messages.

Someone joked, "Calista yelling like that today scared the hell out of me!"

"Madison looked mortified."

"Still, it's pretty rude to shout about something like that across a crowded room."

Madison stayed silent in the group chat, choosing to post on her social media instead.

There was no caption—just a photo of a sterile hospital hallway showing an IV stand, white walls, and a portion of her wrist.

Within ten minutes, the comments poured in.

"What happened, Madison?"

"Bad cramps?"

She replied to every single person with the exact same message. "I'm fine. It was my own fault."

Madison didn't show up for class the next day.

And the day after that, she still hadn't returned to the dorm.

Our other two roommates, Nancy Smith and Judy Towne, whispered back and forth in hushed tones.

"What happened to Maddie?"

"She said she couldn't talk about it."

That afternoon, I had just left the library when the student advisor, Percy Cobb, called me.

"Calista, report to the administrative office immediately."

When I arrived, Madison was sitting on the couch, looking pale and clutching a medical report.

Dr. Barry Keller from the campus health center was there too.

Percy sat behind his desk, his brow furrowed. "Calista, Madison has reported something serious."

Madison looked up at me. Her eyes were swollen and bloodshot, as if she had been crying all night.

"Calista, I didn't want to blow this out of proportion." Her voice trembled. "But I'm really scared."

Percy placed a medical report on his desk. "Madison was tested at the hospital and was diagnosed with an infection."

He paused, then continued, "She said she borrowed a sanitary pad from you a few days ago."

I met his gaze. "And did she actually get one from me?"

Madison instantly burst into tears. "You didn't give me one in class that day, but I asked you for one the night before in our dorm.

"You gave me one from your drawer. I noticed the wrapper looked like one corner had already been peeled open, but I didn't think anything of it at the time."

Percy said sternly, "Calista, you can't just deny something like this. You need to cooperate with the school and get tested at a hospital."

"I never gave her a pad," I insisted.

"Your word alone isn't enough." Percy's tone hardened. "You live together, share a bathroom, and are close. For everyone's safety, you need to get tested right away."

I looked straight at him and said flatly, "I refuse."

The door wasn't fully closed. Two students walking by stopped in the hallway outside.

"What kind of infection?"

"Could it be… that disease?"

"And she won't get tested? Doesn't that mean she's guilty?"

Whispers broke out in the hallway.

Percy's expression darkened. "Calista, think carefully. If you refuse to cooperate, the school will treat it as a serious disciplinary violation."

Madison lowered her head, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed.

I stood by the door as more and more footsteps came to a stop outside.

Everyone was waiting for me to back down.

Adrian quickly sent another message. "Actually, everyone wants to apologize to you."I stared at the message. After a long moment, I typed, "You can apologize without using a group dinner as an excuse."He didn't reply after that. That afternoon, Judy stopped me outside the classroom building. She wasn't crying, but her eyes were slightly red-rimmed."Calista, I know you won't forgive me," she said. "But I still wanted to apologize to you in person."I looked at her, then said, "Got it."She gave a bitter smile. "Can we ever go back to the way things were?"Judy wanted things to be like they were before? We used to eat together, fight for study rooms, and stay up late finishing assignments. She used to buy me little cakes for my birthday.Yet she was also the first person to throw my things out of the dorm when everyone turned against me."No," I replied.Judy nodded as tears rolled down her cheeks. "I understand."After she left, I went to the lab. When my advisor saw m

Nancy's expression froze.I didn't take the basket from her. "We can be classmates, but forget about being friends."The door slowly closed. I could hear her standing outside for a long time before her footsteps finally faded away. That evening, Judy messaged me too. "Calista, I'm sorry for the nasty things I have said before. Madison fooled me too."I stared at the screen but didn't reply.Being lied to didn't excuse all the things she had done. The next day, the disciplinary committee called me in to verify what had happened.I handed over everything I had. There were screenshots from public social media accounts, chat records, the original audio file, a recording of the class meeting, and screenshots of the posts. The investigation lasted five days.Madison didn't return to school during that time. She deleted all the posts from her social media, changed the names on her accounts, and replaced her profile picture with a solid black image. But it was too late. The guys she

Warren waved for Percy to stop talking. "The scholarship can be granted as special school funding, but we can't call it compensation.""Call it whatever you want. I just want the money and paperwork in place," I said.I didn't care how they presented it. I only cared about the outcome. The meeting lasted for an hour and a half.In the end, they agreed to issue an official school-wide statement that same day.My accommodation was restored, and I was allowed to request a room change. My research grants were restored, and I was still being considered for the college's top scholarship. The school also awarded me a special scholarship from the college president to compensate for the harm the incident caused. As for Madison, the disciplinary committee would decide what to do about her.I stood up to leave, and Dr. Keller followed me into the hallway. We were alone, but he lowered his voice anyway. "Calista, I admit I made some assumptions about you. I'm sorry."I nodded. "I hope t

The next morning, the conference room was packed.Madison didn't show up. Apparently, she had called in sick. The associate dean, Warren Malt, spoke as soon as I sat down. "Calista, we've looked into what happened yesterday. We admit that some of the school's handling of the matter was inappropriate."That was a very mild way of putting it. They made it sound like a minor mistake. They had singled me out and put me through hell, and they were trying to frame it as a minor clerical error. Percy wouldn't even look at me. A new set of documents sat next to him.Warren continued, "The school wants to keep this from escalating any further. If you have any reasonable requests, we're more than willing to hear them.""What about the proposed disciplinary action?" I asked.Warren answered immediately, "It will be officially suspended, of course.""No. I want it completely and permanently expunged," I replied calmly. The room went quiet for a moment.I placed my phone on the table.

As I called the police, the lecture hall erupted into absolute chaos. Voices clashed from every direction. Some students argued I was taking things too far, while others loudly insisted calling the police was the right thing to do. In the middle of the uproar, several students hurriedly lowered their heads, frantically scrubbing their phones to delete the posts they had just shared. Madison finally panicked. She lunged forward, desperately clawing at my arm to snatch the phone from my hand. "Calista, you can't call the police!"Judy stopped her without thinking.Madison jerked free from Judy's grip. "You're all enjoying this, aren't you?"Her voice rose to a frightening pitch. "Didn't you all say you liked me? Why aren't you helping me now?"Percy hurried down from the podium, barely keeping his temper in check. "Calista, hang up the phone right this second. The school is fully equipped to handle this internally." "Will you?" I looked at him. "How? Slap me with another disc

Projected across the screen at the front of the hall was an official medical statement bearing a hospital's verified seal. It was a medical report from the dermatology and infectious disease department at one of the city's top hospitals.I zoomed in on two crucial paragraphs. The first excerpt read, "The infection is transmitted primarily through direct sexual contact. The probability of indirect transmission via casual contact with fomites is clinically negligible." The second statement declared, "Even if outer packaging is compromised or partially torn, a disposable sanitary pad cannot serve as an effective vector for transmitting the aforementioned infection." The collective murmurs in the hall instantly died down as students read the text for themselves. I swiped to the second page of the document. "This specific infection has a well-documented incubation period ranging from several weeks to months. Attempting to attribute a sudden positive diagnosis to a borrowed sani
