Chapter 4

Author: Late Love
My heart sank. Abigail had heard it too.

We exchanged a look. She finally tucked her ID card close against her body, then took my hand. "Let's go."

This time, she was the one who took hold of me first.

We had barely ducked into the cornfield when a long string of firecrackers went off behind us, so loud it sent the birds in the field flapping into the air.

Abigail stopped short. She knew what it meant: the groom's party was back.

In my last life, it wasn't long after these firecrackers went off that Dad and the others found her in the haystack.

I pulled her down into a crouch. "Don't take the path between the fields. They'll see us."

The corn had already grown taller than my head. Even from a whole field away, I could still hear the celebration in the yard.

Someone was shouting, "The groom's here! Hurry up and pour the drinks! We can't be late for the ceremony!"

Little kids were chasing the grown-ups around, begging for candy.

My sister's grip suddenly tightened. I remembered the two pieces of candy in my pocket too. In my last life, I'd happily called everyone over just to get them.

I didn't dare keep thinking about it. I tugged her onward through the corn.

We hadn't gone far before she stumbled. When I turned around, I finally noticed the ring of black-and-blue bruises around her right wrist. The rope had done that last night.

Back then, Mom had told me, "Every girl makes a fuss before her wedding. Once she's married, she'll understand her parents only want what's best for her."

And I'd actually believed it. When my sister cried, I'd even offered her a piece of wedding candy. Thinking about it now, the sweetness of that candy turned my stomach sour.

Soon, someone shouted in the distance, "Nothing on the east side! Nobody on the bridge either!"

Then one of the relatives hollered, "Everybody pitch in and look! We can't afford to delay the ceremony!"

Someone else immediately called back, "The Wrights already put down eighteen grand. You think this wedding's not happening today?"

My sister went pale.

I pulled her toward the edge of the field.

Everyone who'd come for the feast today claimed they were here to celebrate. But all it would take was one word from Dad, and they'd block every road she had.

We climbed down into the abandoned irrigation ditch. It had been dry for years, and the two of us ran west, bent low.

My sister had already tried to run once last night, and her heels had been rubbed raw. Partway down the ditch, her legs gave out and she sucked in a sharp breath from the pain.

I quickly held her up. "Abby, just hang on a little longer. The old brick kiln is right at the end of the ditch."

As long as we got past the kiln, we could head for the highway.

Right then, the loudspeaker at the wedding feast blared to life. A shriek of static drowned out the firecrackers, and Dad's voice carried across the entire field.

"Attention, everybody! Abigail's thrown another tantrum and run off!

"The groom's cars are already in the yard, and we're about to miss the ceremony. Anyone who sees her, help stop her!

"She took Aaron with her too! Whoever spots him, bring him straight back to me! Don't hurt the boy!

"If Abigail won't listen, hold her down. Don't let her get to the bus station!"

For a moment, I couldn't even speak.

In my last life, Dad said my sister only cared about money and turned her nose up at being poor. Then after she died, he said she'd had a nasty temper and couldn't even behave herself in her in-laws' home.

So that was how it worked. As long as Dad spoke first, my sister would always end up the one in the wrong.

Above the ditch, motorcycles roared to life.

Someone shouted, "Get Freddy over to the highway! The Wrights' people are covering the bus station! A few of you women go ask around at her classmates' houses!"

And then there was Mom.

I heard her above us, her voice urgent. "Bring Aaron back to me first! Those two have been close since they were little. As long as I've got Aaron, I don't believe Abigail won't come back for her brother!"

After Abigail died, Dad burned every book she'd left behind. He said she was gone, and keeping them around was bad luck.I didn't understand back then. Now, I finally knew that what those books held wasn't just paper. They held the life my sister should have had.As for me, since my family's situation was still being evaluated, I was placed for the time being with my grandmother, Felicia Cornwell, at her house in the county seat. She had been working out of state as a nanny for years, so she'd only known a little about my sister being forced into marriage. After she rushed back, she held the two of us and cried for an entire day.Mom came by once. She stood outside the door, wanting to see me.I didn't go out.Through the door, I heard her crying. "Aaron, Mom really did it all for this family."I didn't answer.I used to be terrified of Mom crying. Now, it only made me tired. If a family could only be held together by sacrificing my sister, then it could fall apart for all I c

Justin's face darkened. Dad raised his hand to slap Abigail.I threw myself in front of her.The slap never landed. Police sirens suddenly wailed in the distance.Dad's hand froze in midair. Everyone stood there, stunned. Two police cars raced into the gas station, one right behind the other. Their doors flew open, and several officers quickly climbed out. "Nobody move!"Mom went white as a sheet.Justin turned to leave, but an officer blocked his way. Before I could even react, a policewoman had already rushed up to us. "Abigail Ritter?"Abigail went completely stiff. The policewoman turned to me. "Aaron Ritter?"I nodded, and the tears spilled right out.It was only later that I learned what had happened. The day we were taken, the driver of the passing city bus had felt something was off. As soon as he got back to the depot, he pulled the footage from the bus's onboard camera. It clearly showed my sister being dragged into the van by two men. It had caught the license pl

"Help! Kidnappers!"A city bus that was just passing by suddenly slowed down. The driver glanced over at us.I didn't know whether he'd gotten a clear look. The next second, I was shoved into the van too.The door slammed shut.Abigail was pinned down in the back row by the two men. The corner of her mouth had split open and it was bleeding. I threw myself at her and held on tight. The person in the front seat turned around, and I froze. It was Mom.She looked worn out, but when she saw us, it was like a weight had finally lifted off her. "Have you had enough yet? Come home with me."Abigail didn't cry. She only asked Mom one thing. "How did you find us?"Mom didn't answer. "We're your parents. You can run to the ends of the earth, and you'll still be our daughter."The van drove north the whole way. They'd taken all our phones. The two men took turns driving, and Mom sat up front the entire time. Every so often she'd look back at me, as if she was afraid Abigail would "lure

I shrank back toward Abigail in fright. That one movement said more than any words could have. A female officer came right over and shielded me behind her.It took until the afternoon to sort everything out.Ms. Stein got in touch with the school, then contacted the county Women's Advocacy Center. In the end, since I kept crying and refusing to go home, and since Abigail had injuries on her wrist and feet, the staff decided to place us somewhere separate for the time being instead of letting Mom and Dad take me home on their own.As for Abigail, Ms. Stein would go with her to the county seat. Before we left, Dad stood at the entrance of the police station. He looked at Abigail, his voice a low growl. "Abigail. If you walk away today, don't ever call yourself part of this family again."Abigail paused.I thought she would cry. Instead, she only held my hand even tighter."Fine."It was the first time Abigail had ever spoken to Dad that way.But three days later, we found ou

The bus went quiet for a moment. Then a woman sitting near the front spoke up. "Call the police first."The driver nodded. But Mom suddenly reached in to snatch the paper. Right at that moment, the door slid shut. It nearly caught her hand, and she had no choice but to step back. The driver didn't hesitate again. The shuttle bus pulled back onto the road.Through the window, I saw Mom standing by the highway. She didn't run after us. She just took out her phone and stared hard at our bus.A bad feeling suddenly rose in my chest.Sure enough, a few minutes later, the driver's phone rang. He listened for a while, then turned to look back at us. "The police station up ahead wants me to pull over. Your family called the cops."Abigail's hand clamped down on mine.Dad beat us to the police station. He was still wearing the brand-new shirt he'd put on for today's wedding. The moment he saw Abigail, he charged over to grab her. "Abigail! Think you're something now, huh?"An offic

My back went rigid. Abigail stopped too.Slowly, I turned around.Up on the barren slope, Mom was standing beside a locust tree. Behind her were Aunt Melanie and Mom's sister, Aunt Janice.None of the three had sticks in their hands. Even so, seeing them scared me more than seeing Dad would have.In my last life, when Dad dragged my sister out of the haystack, Mom was the first one to throw her arms around her. She kept crying, "Mom's only doing this for your own good." And then, with her own two hands, she'd pushed my sister into the wedding car."Aaron, come here." Mom reached out to me. Her forehead was beaded with sweat, but she kept her voice soft. "Abigail doesn't know any better, and you're going along with her nonsense?"Abigail instinctively stepped in front of me.Mom's gaze immediately shifted to her. "Abigail, the Wrights' cars are already here. Dozens of tables full of family are waiting to eat. How long are you going to keep this up?"My sister squeezed my hand.
