Chapter 5

Author: Late Love
Abigail's breathing turned ragged. She pushed me toward a small hollow in the side of the ditch. "Aaron, hide in here. I'll go out."

I grabbed her. "If you go out there, they'll take you away!"

"But I'm the one they're after." Her voice was shaking, but she was still trying to soothe me. "When you go back, just tell them I tricked you into it. They won't do anything to you."

"Yes, they will," I cut her off.

She froze.

I clenched my jaw and whispered, "I ran away with you today. I'm not on their side anymore."

At least, that was surely how Dad would see it.

In my last life, while I stood on his side, he'd doted on me. But that love came with conditions. I had to obey him, help him shout for my sister, and believe she was the bad one.

The footsteps outside the ditch were getting closer.

I hurriedly pointed west. "Go to the brick kiln. Nobody's blocking that way."

My sister didn't move. Instead, she looked right at me. "Aaron. How do you know where they're going to be?"

The words caught in my throat.

For a split second, I almost told her everything. I wanted to tell her that she'd died, and that I hadn't learned the truth until I was eighteen. I wanted to tell her that for twelve years, every time I dreamed about her, all I could hear was my own voice shouting, "I found my sister!"

But someone was already running along the edge of the ditch above us. All I could do was grip her hand tight.

"Because I don't want to be the reason you suffer ever again."

She stared at me, stunned.

I didn't give her the chance to ask anything else. I just pulled her onward.

A man's voice drifted down from right above our heads.

"Catch the little one, carry him off first! Don't let the big one get away. Tie her hands if you have to, just get her over there. We can't afford to cancel the ceremony!"

Abigail immediately pressed me flat against the wall of the ditch. We barely even breathed.

Only after the footsteps had passed overhead did she slowly let go of me, though her hand never left the back of my head.

By the time we crawled out the far end of the ditch, her feet had started to bleed.

The old brick kiln was just ahead. She made it a dozen or so steps before she couldn't hold herself up anymore, and she sank down against a crumbling wall.

"Aaron, take my ID card." She pushed it into my hands. "And Ms. Stein's number. Go flag down a car on the highway, and once you get to the county seat, go find her.

"Show her my ID card. She'll know something happened to me."

I put my hands behind my back. "No."

She got frantic. "Do as I say!"

"You said you'd teach me how to write your name."

She clearly hadn't expected me to bring that up out of nowhere.

I looked at her. "You still haven't."

Her lips moved.

After two seconds, she tucked the ID card away again. "Okay. Once we're out of here, I'll teach you."

We circled around the brick kiln. The highway lay at the bottom of the barren slope ahead, and I could already hear cars passing by.

The 11:40 bus to the county seat came through here every day. When I was little, I used to stand by the road and count how many times a day it honked its horn.

When I looked up, I saw the green shuttle bus coming around the bend.

My heart leaped into my throat. "Abby! The bus is here!"

She saw it too. Ignoring the pain in her feet, she grabbed my hand and ran down the slope with me.

If we could just get down there. If we could just flag down that bus. If someone would just be willing to let my sister on...

Then a woman's voice came from behind us.

It wasn't loud. If anything, it was perfectly calm.

"Aaron. Where are you taking your sister?"

After Abigail died, Dad burned every book she'd left behind. He said she was gone, and keeping them around was bad luck.I didn't understand back then. Now, I finally knew that what those books held wasn't just paper. They held the life my sister should have had.As for me, since my family's situation was still being evaluated, I was placed for the time being with my grandmother, Felicia Cornwell, at her house in the county seat. She had been working out of state as a nanny for years, so she'd only known a little about my sister being forced into marriage. After she rushed back, she held the two of us and cried for an entire day.Mom came by once. She stood outside the door, wanting to see me.I didn't go out.Through the door, I heard her crying. "Aaron, Mom really did it all for this family."I didn't answer.I used to be terrified of Mom crying. Now, it only made me tired. If a family could only be held together by sacrificing my sister, then it could fall apart for all I c

Justin's face darkened. Dad raised his hand to slap Abigail.I threw myself in front of her.The slap never landed. Police sirens suddenly wailed in the distance.Dad's hand froze in midair. Everyone stood there, stunned. Two police cars raced into the gas station, one right behind the other. Their doors flew open, and several officers quickly climbed out. "Nobody move!"Mom went white as a sheet.Justin turned to leave, but an officer blocked his way. Before I could even react, a policewoman had already rushed up to us. "Abigail Ritter?"Abigail went completely stiff. The policewoman turned to me. "Aaron Ritter?"I nodded, and the tears spilled right out.It was only later that I learned what had happened. The day we were taken, the driver of the passing city bus had felt something was off. As soon as he got back to the depot, he pulled the footage from the bus's onboard camera. It clearly showed my sister being dragged into the van by two men. It had caught the license pl

"Help! Kidnappers!"A city bus that was just passing by suddenly slowed down. The driver glanced over at us.I didn't know whether he'd gotten a clear look. The next second, I was shoved into the van too.The door slammed shut.Abigail was pinned down in the back row by the two men. The corner of her mouth had split open and it was bleeding. I threw myself at her and held on tight. The person in the front seat turned around, and I froze. It was Mom.She looked worn out, but when she saw us, it was like a weight had finally lifted off her. "Have you had enough yet? Come home with me."Abigail didn't cry. She only asked Mom one thing. "How did you find us?"Mom didn't answer. "We're your parents. You can run to the ends of the earth, and you'll still be our daughter."The van drove north the whole way. They'd taken all our phones. The two men took turns driving, and Mom sat up front the entire time. Every so often she'd look back at me, as if she was afraid Abigail would "lure

I shrank back toward Abigail in fright. That one movement said more than any words could have. A female officer came right over and shielded me behind her.It took until the afternoon to sort everything out.Ms. Stein got in touch with the school, then contacted the county Women's Advocacy Center. In the end, since I kept crying and refusing to go home, and since Abigail had injuries on her wrist and feet, the staff decided to place us somewhere separate for the time being instead of letting Mom and Dad take me home on their own.As for Abigail, Ms. Stein would go with her to the county seat. Before we left, Dad stood at the entrance of the police station. He looked at Abigail, his voice a low growl. "Abigail. If you walk away today, don't ever call yourself part of this family again."Abigail paused.I thought she would cry. Instead, she only held my hand even tighter."Fine."It was the first time Abigail had ever spoken to Dad that way.But three days later, we found ou

The bus went quiet for a moment. Then a woman sitting near the front spoke up. "Call the police first."The driver nodded. But Mom suddenly reached in to snatch the paper. Right at that moment, the door slid shut. It nearly caught her hand, and she had no choice but to step back. The driver didn't hesitate again. The shuttle bus pulled back onto the road.Through the window, I saw Mom standing by the highway. She didn't run after us. She just took out her phone and stared hard at our bus.A bad feeling suddenly rose in my chest.Sure enough, a few minutes later, the driver's phone rang. He listened for a while, then turned to look back at us. "The police station up ahead wants me to pull over. Your family called the cops."Abigail's hand clamped down on mine.Dad beat us to the police station. He was still wearing the brand-new shirt he'd put on for today's wedding. The moment he saw Abigail, he charged over to grab her. "Abigail! Think you're something now, huh?"An offic

My back went rigid. Abigail stopped too.Slowly, I turned around.Up on the barren slope, Mom was standing beside a locust tree. Behind her were Aunt Melanie and Mom's sister, Aunt Janice.None of the three had sticks in their hands. Even so, seeing them scared me more than seeing Dad would have.In my last life, when Dad dragged my sister out of the haystack, Mom was the first one to throw her arms around her. She kept crying, "Mom's only doing this for your own good." And then, with her own two hands, she'd pushed my sister into the wedding car."Aaron, come here." Mom reached out to me. Her forehead was beaded with sweat, but she kept her voice soft. "Abigail doesn't know any better, and you're going along with her nonsense?"Abigail instinctively stepped in front of me.Mom's gaze immediately shifted to her. "Abigail, the Wrights' cars are already here. Dozens of tables full of family are waiting to eat. How long are you going to keep this up?"My sister squeezed my hand.
