Chapter 3

Autor: Perfect Timing
Keyla's mother had passed away when she was young, leaving her with a gambling addict for a father.

Almost every semester, her father would try to pull her out of school, wanting to marry her off early just to pocket the wedding money.

It was only her straight A's that gave the relatives any leverage to talk her father out of it.

The SAT exam was her one and only ticket to escaping him.

If her application fell through, she'd be dragged right back home and sold off to clear his gambling debts.

They triple-checked to make sure my application data was locked in and completely unalterable before finally letting me go.

But the moment I reached the school gates, Luke caught up and grabbed me by the neck.

"We talked it over, and letting you go home right now is still too risky. So, you're staying at my place for the next ten days. You can go home once the first round of applications officially closes."

Without giving me a chance to protest, the group shoved me into the back of Luke's car.

Panic flared in my chest. My temples throbbed as I pleaded, "I swear I won't tell anyone. My parents are going to worry. Please just let me go home."

Nobody listened. After locking me in Luke's garage, the group let out a collective sigh of relief.

Keyla suggested cheerfully, "We're about to start a whole new life. We should go celebrate!"

Everyone cheered in agreement, though they quickly began debating where to go.

Keyla glanced at Luke. Smiling, she said, "Let's go to Starlight Lounge."

The crowd fell dead silent, exchanging uneasy glances.

Starlight Lounge was a high-end luxury club, way past the budget of a bunch of broke high school graduates.

Sensing their awkwardness and eager to show off in front of Luke, Keyla pulled out her phone and flashed a bank balance of three thousand dollars.

"We're about to be top students at elite schools. By then, our parents' and relatives' gifts, plus school scholarships, will be rolling in. Tonight is on me. Let's live it up!"

The realization clicked, and the room erupted into cheers.

I scoffed inside the dark room. They hadn't even received their acceptance letters yet, and they were already living in a fantasy world.

Still, given her family situation, there was no way she legally had three thousand dollars. Where did that money come from?

Leaving me locked in the garage, the crowd swarmed around Keyla and Luke as they headed out.

As twilight faded into pitch-black, my anxiety spiked. Going radio silent for a whole day meant my parents would be worried sick.

Ever since surviving that fire in my past life, confined spaces had absolutely terrified me. The darker it got, the more the panic closed in.

Shaking uncontrollably, I fumbled around the floor until my fingers brushed against a piece of rusted wire.

Clutching it like a lifeline, my hands trembled so violently that it took several tries before I finally wedged it into the padlock.

With a sharp click, the lock fell to the floor.

I bolted out the door, sprinting wildly in the direction of my house.

As I neared my neighborhood, I spotted a crowd in the distance, and the sound of familiar laughter echoed down the street.

"Man, Luke's confession to Keyla tonight was so beautiful. I almost said yes for her!"

I hadn't expected them to be heading this way. Before I could duck out of sight, someone spotted me and yelled, "Justin escaped! He's going to ruin our futures!"

I immediately dodged past them and bolted. Luckily, my family's bookstore was close by, and I was inside in just a few strides.

Dad looked up, surprised to see me. "You're finally home! Where have you been? We couldn't reach you all day."

Before I could even catch my breath, Keyla's cold voice echoed from right behind me. "Mr. Drew, Justin just came back to tell you that we're all going on a graduation trip. He'll be out of town for the next ten days."

Dad beamed with relief. "Oh, that's wonderful! You kids worked hard. You deserve to relax."

Furious, I whipped around and yelled, "Are you ever going to leave me alone?"

Then I saw that standing behind Keyla, who was smiling innocently, was the escaped convict who had slaughtered my family in my past life. He was clamping a hand on Jake.

Keyla's father reeked of alcohol, and the smile in his eyes carried a chilling edge. "I heard you won't be going to college after all? And you went behind my back to borrow three thousand dollars from loan sharks?""I'll pay it back myself!" Keyla cried out. "I can still go to college. I just need to repeat one more year.""And how much more of my money are you planning to waste? You've always been a financial drain, eating my food and giving nothing back. It's better to marry you off now so I can finally get a return on my investment."Tears streamed down Keyla's face as she begged, "Dad, please, just one year. Just one last year."He landed a slap on her face. "You worthless bitch! How much longer do you expect me to feed you? I've already picked out a husband for you. Toby Murray from the next village. Sure, he's a bit slow, but he offered the biggest engagement gift."With that, he dragged her toward a waiting cab and left.…Many years later, after returning from abroad, I

The hall fell dead silent, save for the aggressive clack of a woman's high heels.Luke clutched his head, fresh blood seeping through his fingers. The woman marched up, grabbed Luke by the collar, and unleashed a barrage of slaps that echoed through the room."Is your family tired of living? You practically begged me for this arranged marriage, and now you're fooling around behind my back?"Panic flooded Luke's eyes as he stammered, "No, honey! She and I were just a fling! She forced me into it!"The panic of failing to match a college had already pushed Keyla to the brink. Hearing Luke dismiss her as a fling was the final straw. She glared at him, yelling, "A fling? I literally took out a three-thousand-dollar loan from loan sharks just to treat you to a high-end club for a night, and now you're saying I forced you?"My jaw dropped. The three thousand dollars was from loan sharks. She had actually gone that far just to please him.But Luke didn't show a shred of gratitude. He

Without even waiting for the official media investigation, the students in the room finally snapped and lunged straight at Luke."You said the app was foolproof! Give me my future back!""Luke, you ruined our lives! You have to take responsibility for this!""And you, Keyla! Didn't you brag about helping design the system? This is on you too!"Luke was forced backward step by step, but Keyla suddenly grabbed his arm, a manic desperation flashing in her eyes."We didn't have a choice! Justin hired a bunch of thugs to threaten Luke and me! We were just too terrified of getting hurt, so we gave in and let everyone use the app!"Luke's eyes lit up, taking the cue as he nodded vigorously. "Yes! Justin's been hooking up with street thugs for a long time. We even saw them outside a hotel!"The live stream comment section exploded instantly."Wow, getting taken from behind by street thugs? Such a whore.""He looks so decent. Who knew he was into such wild stuff? Isn't he afraid of cat

Lawson looked absolutely livid. He was supposed to retire next year, and he never thought a giant clusterfuck like this would land on his lap."There's nothing we can do. Get ready to repeat the year," he said. The parents, who had just managed to calm down, nearly fainted from shock.Only now did everyone finally realize that their college dreams had completely shattered. The brilliant prodigies who had looked so glamorous moments ago were now deathly pale, panic swirling in their eyes."But we're honors students! Our scores are well over 1,400!"Lawson pointed a furious finger right at their noses and roared, "If your application fails to match, you could score a perfect 1,600, and you'd still have to repeat the year!"One of the reporters had started a live stream, and the comment section was already scrolling at a manic pace."Some 'elite geniuses' they are. Just a bunch of idiots.""Failing to match as a whole class? Wow, true friendship. I'm so moved. Hahaha!"Keyla sto

"Failed to match any college? How is that possible?"Not a single one of these supposedly elite students believed it.Luke threw his arm right back around Edward's neck, looking incredibly smug. "I didn't realize you were such a comedian, Mr. Hopkins. The entire class scored over 1,400 on the SAT. There's no way we failed to match."Besides, I can guarantee that the majors our class picked are the absolute best choices available for our scores."One classmate peeked out from behind Edward. Seeing the news reporters outside, he began excitedly fixing his clothes. "My mom spent a fortune buying me this limited-edition outfit. She said I couldn't look cheap on camera."Another student picked up my poster, stifling a laugh as he held it up. "Mr. Hopkins, the whole class is ready for the interviews. Even Justin, who only applied to community college, brought his own sign."Staring at the crowd of highly-educated fools before him, Edward suppressed his rising fury as he asked, "And wha

The blood froze in my veins. As I stared back into those bloodthirsty eyes, a single voice screamed inside my head, "Run!"Dad was warm and welcoming, clearing off a table and inviting my classmates inside to rest.I wanted to stop him, but my entire body was paralyzed with fear.Reeking of alcohol, Luke leaned in close and hissed a low threat into my ear, "Come with us. Don't make me say it twice."Faced with dozens of cold eyes, I had no choice but to follow Keyla out the door.I tried my best to comfort Jake as we walked, but the sheer terror wouldn't leave me.The convict's words—"Men taste even better"—rang relentlessly in my ears.We finally pulled up to a hotel entrance. Luke turned to me with a sickening smirk. "Since you love snitching and sticking your nose in other people's business so much, consider this a graduation gift you'll never forget."Panic took over. I looked desperately at Keyla. "Keyla, do you even know what you guys are doing? Let me go home. I swear I
