Chapter 4

Autor: Julian Rowan
Charles’ jaw slowly tightened. “Once tomorrow’s briefing is over, you won’t have a seat at the board table or a voice there ever again.”

I looked at him calmly. “Then you’d better make every word count tomorrow. Once the evidence comes out, you won’t be able to take any of it back.”

I left the Peay residence and went straight to Grant Corporation's headquarters.

In the conference room, the evidence I had just brought was spread out in front of Elizabeth. She flipped to the final page. “Did you come here because you want me to protect your inheritance rights?”

“The Peay family's inheritance is an issue between the Peay family and me.”

I pulled out the USB's preservation records and Peay Corporation’s investigation report, placing them side by side in front of her. “But the losses Grant Corporation suffered on this project are something we share.”

Elizabeth looked at me. “What do you need from Grant Corporation?”

“I need a complete copy made of the devices that have already been sealed. I also want the earliest system records, the ones no one has had a chance to alter.”

I circled the gaps in Peay Corporation’s report.

“I need to confirm three things—which USB drives were connected to the project computer that afternoon, which computer was used to access my account, and who altered the original records.”

Elizabeth picked up the phone and pressed the intercom. “Notify the investigation team and legal counsel. Launch a joint investigation immediately. Anything you find gets copied to Henry as well.”

The head of the investigation team arrived soon after and took the documents from her.

“What about the 20 million dollars?”

“Start with the signature and phone number used when the account was opened, then identify every device that has accessed the account since.”

I paused for a moment.

“The account was opened under the name I had before I was adopted. Pull the records documenting that name change as well, but don’t release anything publicly yet.”

Elizabeth looked up. “You suspect there's something wrong with your adoption records?”

“I can't be sure yet.”

That lead could be connected to the 20 million dollars, or it could simply be another piece of Charles’ setup to frame me.

Elizabeth slid another document across the table. It was a formal request from the Peay family to replace me as Elizabeth's marriage partner.

“The Peay family wants Charles to take your place. The Grants have rejected it. The Grants choose someone willing to take risks with us, not a title the Peay family can hand out whenever it suits them.

“The engagement will not change. Don’t sign anything accepting liability until the joint investigation is complete.”

With that, Elizabeth signed the investigation authorization.

“I’ll attend tomorrow as the project partner.”

I gathered the documents. “You don’t need to help me prove my innocence.”

“I know.” Elizabeth held my gaze. “I’m only making sure no one can throw you out of that room before the evidence comes to light.”

By the time I left Grant Corporation, night had fallen.

A notification appeared on my phone: [The first batch of unaltered original records has been extracted.]

I opened the file. The bid was first copied at 4:12 pm. Charles handed me the USB drive later, at 4:31 pm. It was 19 minutes apart, which meant the bid had already been copied before that USB drive ever appeared.

I kept reading.

The USB drive connected to the project computer at 4:12 pm was not the one that was later sealed.

Every USB drive had a unique device ID, like a person’s national ID number. The two IDs in the records were completely different.

I stared at the screen, then slowly closed my laptop. They would publicly declare me responsible and have everyone sign the confirmation document tomorrow. That document would become evidence they could never deny.

…

At 9:00 am the next day, Peay Corporation’s largest conference hall was packed. Directors, senior executives, investor representatives, and members of the press were all in attendance.

Grant Corporation’s seats were empty.

Dad explained that Elizabeth had something urgent come up and might not be able to attend.

Gideon and Aaron cooperated with the investigation and accepted responsibility for their respective roles. Those involved from Stark Corporation were also held accountable. The project that had originally been compromised was put back out for bid.Peay Corporation and Grant Corporation made it to the final round once again.Someone asked me if I was worried history would repeat itself. I only replied, “Procedures exist to keep people from gambling on the assumption that they’ll get away with it.”This time, both teams reviewed and confirmed the bid together. Every step was witnessed. No one could take the documents away alone, and no one could bypass the rules simply because of who they were. When the results were announced, we won the project with a reasonable bid, not by ten thousand dollars more, and not to prove that it had belonged to me in my previous life.We won because our proposal was simply the better one this time. After the celebration dinner, I returned to the o

Charles stared at me. “What are you talking about?”“Nothing.” I had already found the answer in his expression. He leaned back in his chair. “Henry, are you feeling pretty satisfied with yourself now? Dad has lost his position, and I’m sitting here. Peay Corporation and the Grant family’s project are all yours. You finally have everything.”I looked at him calmly. “You still think we were fighting over the same thing.”“Were we not?”“No. What I wanted was for everything I did to be mine to answer for, and for no one to force me to confess to something I never did. What I wanted was for you to never again be able to use the word ‘brother’ to put your crimes in my hands.”Charles let out a cold laugh. “Without Elizabeth, you couldn’t have done any of this.”I opened the evidence index. The USB drive was sealed because I had demanded it.The third-party evidence preservation was something I had arranged in advance. The original records were something I made him sign with his o

After news of Dad's suspension from Peay Corporation became public, Stark Corporation immediately issued a statement. They claimed they had not known anything about the leaked bid. The 20 million dollars, they said, had simply been a legitimate consulting fee. After reading the statement, I told my secretary, “Turn Aaron’s chat records over to the project owners.”The messages showed that Stark Corporation’s contact had not only confirmed the receipt of our bid but had also discussed with Charles how to make it look as though I had received the money. The scheme was simple. They knew our number, then they bid 10,000 dollars more. The final step was transferring the money into my account. That was the entire plan. Anyone could understand it.The project owners quickly announced that Stark Corporation’s winning bid would be suspended and that the entire bidding process would be reviewed.Representatives from Stark Corporation came to see me. They were willing to compensate us for

I asked, “So he has to hurt me before you’ll call it a crime?”Dad lowered his voice. “Henry, you’ve already won. Your position, your inheritance rights, Peay Corporation… They’ll all be returned to you. Why do you have to destroy him?”I suddenly felt exhausted. In my previous life, I spent my last breath trying to understand why he had never been willing to hear my explanation. In this life, I finally knew the answer. It was not that the evidence had been insufficient; it was because I was the one being accused, and the person who had actually done wrong was his biological son.“Call a board meeting tomorrow.” I rose to my feet. “You can repeat what you just said in front of everyone.”…The next day, Peay Corporation’s board convened again. This time, there were no reporters.Dad sat at the head of the table, looking as though he had aged years overnight.I played the recording from the abandoned archive building.Charles admitted in his own voice to fabricating the ban

“Sign a statement admitting that you instructed Aaron and Gideon to frame me, then hand over the original evidence. If you do as I say, I’ll give you this letter back.”I glanced at the statement. “Do you really think I’m going to sign this?”“You will.” Charles raised his phone. Dad's number was displayed on the screen. “Dad already agreed. As long as I keep this matter under control, he’ll protect me. I’m his only biological son.”When he said the words biological son, a long-suppressed pride finally surfaced in his eyes.“Everything in the Peay family is supposed to be mine. You were nothing more than a replacement he chose when he didn’t have a son.”I did not argue. I simply asked, “So you copied the bid and framed me because Dad told you to?”“Of course not.”He gave a cold laugh. “He wouldn’t have the nerve, but he’ll clean up the mess for me. Just like yesterday, when he could throw you out with a few fabricated records. Then he can use the entire Peay family to put me

I stared at those words for a long time without saying anything. It turned out Charles was not an adopted son like me. He was Dad's biological son.Back then, Lovina’s identity could not be made public, so Dad used an adoption arrangement to bring him into Peay Corporation. No wonder he sided with Charles without hesitation every time a choice had to be made. It was not because Charles was more obedient, and it was not because I was somehow less of a Peay. It was simply a matter of them sharing the same blood.Elizabeth looked at me. “What are you going to do?”I closed the file. “We keep this out of the public eye for now.”She raised an eyebrow. “You’re not going to use it?”“Charles leaked the bid and framed me. The evidence we already have is more than enough. I don’t need to prove whose biological son he is to prove that I committed no crime.”His parentage could explain Dad's favoritism, but it could not lessen anyone’s guilt.I returned to the temporary office and too
