ALICE

The glass door of the café slid open as I stepped inside. After the awful morning I had, all I wanted was to sit down with Brea and pretend the rest of the world didn't exist.

I walked toward her table, glad she had texted me to meet up just in time. Spending time with her was exactly what I needed to clear my head.

I sank into the chair opposite hers, letting out a quiet breath to calm myself. The sharp sting in my cheek had faded to a dull throb, but it still felt like Mrs. Stevens’s p

DEVONThe ache in my chest only got worse the more I tried not to think about Alma. How could I not? No wonder I did not feel like going to that party or engaging in that arm wrestling match earlier. Maybe if I was not distracted, I would have seen her text message on time and stopped her before everything happened. The fact that she had risked her life to save Alice made me wonder about her reason behind it."I do not know for now, but I am going to figure that out, and they are going to pay for it," I said, my teeth grinding together in a tight line. "I do not care if I end up dying in the process."My hand clenched around the steering wheel as I spoke without looking in her direction. I knew if I looked at her, she would see how teary my eyes had become, how close I was to breaking even when I tried to stay strong."Devon," she whispered, her voice low as if wanting to say something but not knowing where to start. "I am so sorry that you lost your step sister because of me."Her la

ALICEMy heart thudded in my chest at a pace that made me think it would jump out soon, as I held onto Devon's hand. The way he was reacting to the woman's death made me realize that he must have known her."No, this can't be happening," Devon groaned, shoving his hand into his hair. "She can't be dead.""Devon," I called, trying to get him to look at me, but he didn't. His gaze followed the ambulance until it was out of sight. "Do you know her?"Devon turned to look at me briefly and nodded. "She should not have come here. She should have let me do it myself. I do not care if I died in the process, but not her.""Let's go inside," my mom's voice pulled our attention away as she walked to where we were standing to meet us. "The police might start asking questions again, since they are still investigating."My mother paused when she saw the look on Devon's face, her brow knotting in a frown. I could tell she wanted to ask questions, but instead she gestured for us to go into the house.

DEVON"Devon, do you always have to be cold?" Tristan shouted from where he was sitting, raising his hand up in the air. "Come join us in arm wrestling, and trust me, I am going to win."A slow smirk pulled up on my lips as I stared at him. It was obvious he was trying to boost his own confidence. The last time we tried arm wrestling, I beat him every single time despite all the excuses he made."Is that what you tell yourself to feel better?" I asked. He laughed, exchanging a look with Marco, another one of our teammates. "That is what a scared guy says when he is afraid of loosing."I took a sip from my drink, holding back the urge to walk straight over to the table."You should not go over there. Tristan is just trying to prove a point," Mac said, clicking his tongue. "He knows you will win.""I am not going to give him the satisfaction of a refusal," I told Mac, who was waving his hand at Tristan to stop."What a shame," Marco said in a smooth voice. "I was looking forward to seei

ALICE"What are you going to do?" Brea asked when I did not say anything for a while. "We cannot tell the cops this. They will think we have gone nuts."I rested my back against the headboard without looking in Brea's direction. "We do not need to tell anyone about it. I have been looking out to know who it might be.""Do you think it is Dominic or his parents?" Brea asked me, her eyes wide with concern."I do not know yet," I replied, turning my gaze to meet hers. "But I suspect it could be his parents or some stranger they hired."Brea let out a tired sigh. "We have to be careful. Dominic cannot get away with everything he has been doing against you. I just wish there was a way for us to tell the cops.""We cannot tell the cops," I told Brea, my voice firm. She blinked, her face shifting as if she had just remembered the previous incident I told her about the police where they did nothing to help us. "Yes, that is a bad idea," she mumbled, rubbing her arms. "So it is up to us to fig

DEVON"Nothing really," Mac said, taking a sip from the drink in his hand. "I am in a good mood today and just decided to celebrate it with my favorite teammates."I shook my head, my gaze drifting toward Tristan as he placed his arm on the table, lifting it to start an arm wrestling match while the guys around them cheered out. "So what is making you so happy? Because if it is about the Wildcats game, you and I both know you are not that thrilled over hockey."Mac laughed, shaking his head. "You know me too well, man. But the thing is this, I asked Brea to be my girlfriend, and she agreed."He spread his arms as if he wanted to give me a hug. "Isn't that worth celebrating?"I frowned at him as I walked over to take a seat on the couch opposite his. "Since when did you get this serious?""Since I saw your marriage with Alice thriving. And besides, Brea is a good choice for a girlfriend. She is sweet and kind. Did you see how she was cheering for me at the game yesterday?""Asking her

ALICE"Alice, is that you?" my mom called from the kitchen as I walked into the house, closing the door behind me."Yes, Mom," I replied, staring at the papers scattered around on the glass table before I made my way toward the kitchen. My mom was standing in front of the oven as she pulled on her gloves and reached down to pull out a tray of freshly baked cookies. She placed them on the counter."How are you, mom?" I asked, taking a seat on the high stool near the counter. I stared at the cookies, holding back the urge to grab one right away, and brought my focus back to her."I am fine. I decided to make some cookies so we have something to eat while you are here," she replied. But when her gaze met mine, I frowned."You do not look fine to me, Mom," I said, standing up. I walked over to where she was standing. "Did you sleep at all last night? You have dark bags under your eyes, and what is up with all those papers out in the living room?"She sighed, taking off her gloves. "I am f
