Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
I had said, "Mom, Dad, women can take care of themselves these days. Besides, wealthy families care about education too."

Those words had made Dad hesitate. He knew better than anyone the perks of a respectable job in this day and age.

Grandma, who was already against the idea, immediately threw her arms around Rachael, coddling her. "Did you hear that? Selena said education is the only way out. Don't you dare ruin my granddaughter's life!"

At that time, Mom had given me a dark, unreadable look, silently cursing me for sticking my nose where it didn't belong.

And while Grandma had spoken up for me, every single word she said was a reminder that this was my idea. If anything went wrong in the future, the blame would fall entirely on me.

With half the family opposed, the idea of making Rachel drop out of school was put on hold. I was genuinely happy for her, and I secretly handed over all my savings to her.

"Rachael, you have to get out of this place. Make something of yourself!"

But instead of studying, she ended up falling for a deadbeat hooligan.

By the time we found out, Rachael was already pregnant. Unable to face the public humiliation, Mom and Dad rushed through a wedding and married her off.

The guy had no job and lived off his parents. He wasn't a college student at all, just a thug drifting around the area where they met.

Rachael threw a few fits when she realized she'd been deceived, but it only earned her brutal beatings.

Living miles away, we couldn't protect her. She endured two years of that abuse until she couldn't take it anymore and ran back home.

As Mom held her precious daughter, her eyes burned with a hatred so intense it felt like it could pierce right through me. "This is all your fault, you jinx! If we hadn't listened to you, Rachael would be living the high life right now!"

Dad kicked me to the ground without a shred of hesitation. "You just want to ruin her life, don't you? You just can't stand to see your sister happy!"

"You wicked girl! My poor Rachael!" Grandma wailed at the top of her lungs, but her tears weren't for me. Her heart ached for Rachael, and she had completely forgotten that she had opposed the idea as well.

The blame lay solely on me.

Ignoring the throbbing pain, I banged my head against the floor over and over, begging for forgiveness. I didn't dare say a single negative word about Rachael.

Even though I knew that this was the consequence of her own failure to study, I had to take the blame, or Mom and Dad would literally beat me to death.

Seeing me submit so easily only fueled Mom's rage. She took my compliance as a guilty confession. She and Dad tied me up in the woodshed, shoved a rag into my mouth, and beat me up.

Grandma, too frail to do much, just struck me repeatedly with a broom.

The nightmare didn't end until nightfall.

As I lay on the dirt floor, barely catching my breath, Rachael walked in under the moonlight. The knife in her hand reflected a chilling gleam.

Before I could react, she drove the blade into me.

As my eyes widened in bitter disbelief, her final curse echoed in my ears. "It's all your fault, you jinx. You ruined my life."

When my blood splattered across her face, I saw Rachael clearly for the very first time. Her expression was utterly monstrous.

"What are you standing around daydreaming for? Just because you said a few nice words doesn't mean you get out of cooking, you lazy brat."

Mom's kick to my backside snapped me out of my thoughts. She scoffed at my hesitation.

I nodded obediently, hurrying into the kitchen.

Now that the family was in full agreement, they would be discussing how to pull Rachael out of school.

It was better that I wasn't there anyway. The more I knew, the sooner I'd die.

Because I had been given a second chance, I felt exceptionally cheerful. I even walked over to the market to buy a nice cut of meat.

Since Rachael was dropping out, I didn't need to save money for her anymore. Besides, she was a total ungrateful leech. I'd rather throw my money down the drain than give her another dime.

The neighborhood ladies noticed my good mood along the way and called out to greet me, asking how Rachael was doing in school.

She had been the village's bright hope for college. But now, that road was completely blocked.

I looked up, feigning an innocent, timid curiosity. "Mrs. Murray, what kind of people are the Hesters, exactly?"

Village women love nothing more than gossip. Swapping rumors about who was doing what was their favorite way to pass the time.

Hearing my question, Mrs. Murray quickly leaned in closer and pulled me over to the side.

What a touching scene. The trap they had set for me dissolved in an instant as Ethan, nursing his bruises, tried to comfort Rachael. In my previous life, it had been that same sweet-talking mouth that had deceived Rachael into marrying him. It seemed that even in this lifetime, nothing had changed.Mom completely forgot about trying to ruin me. She grabbed my hand tightly, suddenly treating me like her only lifeline. "Talk some sense into Rachael! Please, talk to her! If she marries a piece of trash like that, her life is over!"She even slapped her thighs in pure desperation.I ripped my arm out of her grasp and mocked, "How interesting. When I refuse to marry, I'm an ungrateful wretch, but when Rachael marries, her life is over? I actually think they're a match made in heaven.""That's different!" Mom shrieked as she slapped her thigh, looking as though she had aged ten years in a single second.I savored her ugly breakdown, turned on my heel, and walked away. From the very mo

Rachael was clearly grasping at straws.Refusing to fall into the trap of self-defense, I responded coldly, "Then let him prove it. Let him show everyone the evidence that we slept together!"They had been waiting for me to say exactly that. Luke eagerly fished a piece of clothing out of his pocket. It was my underwear.Mom and Dad really had spared no expense in setting this up. Too bad clothes couldn't talk. It proved absolutely nothing.I shot back, "And how do we know that isn't Rachael's? You honestly expect me to marry him based on a piece of fabric?"For all we know, Rachael's the one sleeping around with him, and you're just trying to pin it on me. It wouldn't be the first time you tried to force her messes onto me. Just last week, you tried to make me hand my degree over to her!"My words were sharp and dripping with venom.Rachael flew into a frenzy, lunging forward to claw at my face. "What the hell are you talking about? I'll rip your tongue out!"Her explosive re

A few days later, a swarm of reporters forced their way onto campus.Mom and Dad, dressed in tattered rags and sporting dark circles under their eyes, ambushed me right outside my classroom. The reporters' questions came fast and sharp."Ms. Selena Booth, is it true that you abandoned your adoptive family after getting into college? Don't you think that's incredibly ungrateful?""According to your parents, after a few years of school, you grew materialistic, looked down on your childhood fiance, and want to dump him now. Is that correct?"As the crowd surrounded me, Mom and Dad dragged a man forward who looked like a total thug.I frowned in disgust. It was Luke Gordon, the biggest scoundrel in our village. His family had a bit of money. When he wasn't busy causing trouble, he spent his time harassing women around the village. He went after anyone and everyone. Age didn't matter to him, and he certainly wasn't picky. The moment his eyes landed on me, they lit up with greed, tho

Following the incident, the dean, Professor Justin Newman, came to check on me personally. His eyes were filled with sympathy as he patted my shoulder. "Things will get better. Someday, you'll build your own family and have people who truly love you."He was running out of words to comfort me.I lowered my head, clutching the hem of my shirt as my voice cracked. "Professor Newman, my parents won't just give up. You have to help me."When I looked up, tears streamed down my cheeks. At this college, Professor Newman was the only shield I had left. Mom and Dad had completely lost their mind. It wasn't beneath them to abduct me and force me into a marriage.Taking my safety into account, the faculty collectively decided to temporarily move me into the staff dormitories.Meanwhile, Mom and Dad were lurking outside the women's dorms to dig up information. They spared no expense, buying gifts and trying every trick in the book, terrified that I might suddenly vanish. But their efforts

As the recorded audio played in full, the crowd's fury instantly shifted onto Mom and Dad.If my supposedly ruining Rachael's life had made the students angry yet indifferent, Mom's and Dad's actions now struck a nerve.Every student knew what it felt like to live under the weight of favoritism. If a precedent like this were set, any one of them could be the next victim forced to give up their future.Several students stepped forward, surrounding Mom and Dad with clenched fists."What do you think you're doing? Assault is against the law!" Mom screeched, trying to mask her fear.A female student sneered. "You're the ones who came to our campus to cause a scene. If anyone's breaking the law, it's you. Besides, look how many of us there are. We're the future of this country. Our words carry weight."She held up her hand, showing palms calloused from serious training. A punch from her would definitely leave a lasting mark.Rachael shrank into Mom's arms, whimpering, "Selena, I don'

Mom yelled, "Stop acting innocent, you bitch! If you didn't know beforehand, why did you leave so quickly? Why didn't you stop me back then? You're the one with the education in this family."You did this on purpose to ruin Rachael! Listen up, you're going to transfer your degree to Rachael right now, or I swear I'll beat you to death!"A cold laugh escaped my lips. Now that the marriage into the wealthy Hester family had fallen through, they suddenly remembered me again.Under the guise of a debt of gratitude for taking me in, I had slaved away for them for years, all while starving in rags. Even my college tuition had been paid entirely with money I earned from my part-time jobs. What did I actually owe them that made them so shamelessly entitled? But that twisted family didn't care about my feelings.Dad took over the phone next. He didn't yell. Instead, he lowered his voice. "Selena, you've always been a tough kid. You can survive on your own. But Rachael is different. She's
