Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
"Kenneth's different," Mom blurted out. "He's behind in school, and he needs someone to help him adjust—"

"That's his problem." I cut her off. "I'm not going to pay for it with my future."

I straightened up, shutting down her attempt to keep persuading me. "I'm going to bed now. Please leave."

In my past life, I'd dropped down to a regular class so I wouldn't disappoint Mom and Dad.

But what had that gotten me? Kenneth acted weak and pitiful to win the sympathy of the whole class, then got them to ostracize and bully me.

My grades dropped sharply. For those three years, I was stuck with the ugly label of a vicious schemer.

Every time I tried to explain myself or set the record straight, a single line from him would drown me out—"I knew it. Jonah still hates me as much as ever."

This time, I wouldn't let his scheming ruin my future again.

…

On the first day of school, I walked into the honors classroom. A board on the wall celebrated past graduates who had been admitted to top colleges.

Everything here was the same as it had been in my past life—only this time, I wasn't going to leave.

"Jonah?" a familiar voice called out right beside me.

I looked up and saw my childhood friend, Julia Jensen, standing in front of me, her face lit up with delighted surprise.

"It really is you! We get to be in the same class again."

She pulled out the chair next to mine and sat down without a second thought, just as close to me as she'd always been since we were kids.

In my past life, having her this close would have made my cheeks burn and my heart pound.

But now, I remembered the words she'd said in the hospital hallway before.

"Jonah, Kenneth really needs me. Please, just let us be together. I know this isn't fair to you, but I really love him."

Those words cut like knives, slicing into my heart again and again.

I pushed down the emotions churning inside me and smiled politely. "Yeah. What a coincidence."

Julia noticed my cold distance and was visibly taken aback. "Jonah, what's wrong?"

I arranged my textbooks one by one without looking up. "Class is about to start. You'd better hurry back to your seat."

"I—"

The bell rang, cutting her off.

…

High school coursework was intense, especially in the honors class.

During lunch break, a roar of laughter echoed from the hallway.

"Hahaha, I'm dying!"

"Oh my God, he didn't even know it was an automatic door!"

"He thought it was a push door and walked straight into it!"

I had a hunch, so I walked over to the door and looked out.

Kenneth stood in the doorway of the classroom next door, his face flushed bright red and a noticeable mark on his forehead.

His backpack lay on the floor, its contents spilled everywhere—a few shabby notebooks, a ballpoint pen nearly out of ink, and a pencil case that had been patched up several times.

A crowd of students gathered around him, some laughing behind their hands, others whispering.

"He doesn't even know how an automatic door works…"

"I heard he transferred here from somewhere in the mountains, and both his parents are gone."

"No wonder he's such a hick."

Kenneth crouched down, fumbling to gather his things as tears welled in his eyes.

Just then, Julia walked over. She crouched down, helped him pick up the scattered books, and said softly, "It's okay. I walked into one of those too when I first got here."

Her voice was gentle and caring, like warm sunshine on a winter day.

Kenneth looked up, and right on cue, his tears spilled over. "I'm sorry. I didn't know. I thought I had to push it."

Julia handed him a tissue. "Don't cry. There's a first time for everything."

Then she turned to the students who gathered to watch the show and snapped, "All of you, clear out!"

But instead of leaving, they laughed even louder. They'd seen how Kenneth accidentally knocked Julia's bracelet to the floor as he took the tissue.

On the day he left, he kept crying and screaming, "Jonah framed me!"But no one believed him anymore. From then on, Mom, Dad, and Lenora started coming to see me at school all the time. Every few days, they brought over clothes, health supplements, snacks, fruit—anything they could think of.Whenever Mom came, her eyes were red-rimmed. "Jonah, make sure you eat enough. Don't go hungry."Dad was always reminding me, "If you need anything, just let me know. Don't try to handle everything on your own."Lenora called me every single week. "Jonah, how have you been? Is school stressing you out? Do you want me to come back and keep you company?"It was their way of trying to make amends and bridge the rift between us.I accepted everything they offered."Thanks.""Got it.""No need. I'm fine."My answers were always short and cold.Every time Mom heard my replies, she'd falter for a moment, disappointment flickering in her eyes. But she di

Mom snapped out of her daze and hurried after me."Jonah, wait!" she called, her voice trembling with panic.I stopped, but I didn't turn around."I'm sorry," she choked out. "I was wrong. I shouldn't have doubted you."Dad walked over too, his eyes red-rimmed. "Jonah, I owe you an apology. I should've asked you first instead of just…"He hung his head.Lenora stood beside them, her hands hanging limply at her sides. "Jonah, I was wrong too. I shouldn't have blamed you without asking first."I listened quietly to their belated apologies. Then I brushed it all off as if it were nothing. "Got it."I walked on. Behind me, Mom still wanted to follow, but Dad held her back."Give him some space," Dad said, his voice low and heavy with guilt. The three of them stood rooted in place, watching me walk away, completely at a loss.…When I got back to the classroom, Mason immediately rushed over. "Jonah! Are you okay?""I'm fine," I said flatly, sitting back down at my desk."This

"Jonah, I'm begging you. Just own up to it…" Kenneth pleaded through his tears. The sympathetic murmurs from the audience grew louder."Kenneth's such a good person. Even after all this, he's still pleading for Jonah," someone said.Another agreed, "Seriously. Having an older brother like that is the worst luck in the world."Hearing the crowd's comments, Kenneth could no longer hide the smugness in his eyes. He looked at me, his lips curling into a faint smirk. It was time."Is everyone done watching the video?" I asked, my voice calm and unhurried.Everyone in the auditorium was taken aback."Then could you freeze the footage at the 1:32 mark?" I added, turning to the dean. "And zoom in on that person's profile."The dean looked startled for a moment, then did as I asked. The footage paused. In the frame, the figure stealing the exam questions had just turned around, revealing his profile to the security camera. It was only for a split second, but it was clear enough for ev

"Jonah, say something already!" Mason urged. "The whole school's talking about it. Aren't you going to set the record straight?"I sat at my desk, turning the pages of my book slowly. "No rush.""No rush?" Mason blurted out, on the verge of tears. "Do you have any idea what people out there are saying about you? Some say you stopped at nothing to get into the honors class, and others say your family donated money to the school to hush it up.""Let them talk."I looked up and gazed out the window. Out on the sports field, Kenneth was saying something to a group of girls, looking deeply pained every so often. He was a really good actor, just as he'd been in my past life."The more you rush into things like this, the more likely you are to mess up," I said. "Sit back and watch how it all plays out. That's the only way to see everyone's true colors."…The rumors spread even faster than I'd expected. That same afternoon, Mom and Dad got a call from the school about an emergency me

What burned in Kenneth's eyes was jealousy bordering on madness. The day after the midterm results came out, the school forum blew up.Someone had put up an anonymous post titled, "Shocking! Jonah Shepherd, Ranked Third in His Grade, Stole Exam Questions in Advance—Video Proof Inside."The post described in detail how I'd supposedly cheated. It claimed that the night before the exam, I'd snuck into the academic affairs office and taken pictures of the answer key.Attached below it was a blurry screenshot of security footage. It showed a figure in a school uniform standing at the door of the academic affairs office with his back to the camera. His face wasn't visible, but his build did look somewhat like mine. The comments section exploded instantly."Damn, is this for real?""I knew it. His grades are usually middle-of-the-road, so how did he suddenly score that high?""If this is true, that's way over the line.""But you can't even see his face in the footage. How can anyone

The office went dead silent.Dad's mouth hung open, the rest of his words stuck in his throat as he stared at me blankly.Mom was stunned too. She'd never expected me to apologize to Kenneth so suddenly.Kenneth froze where he stood. His expression shifted erratically—panic and shock flashed in his eyes, along with a trace of disappointment. He'd been waiting for me to fight back, to get into an argument with Mom and Dad, to hear Dad say, "We're going to transfer you to a regular class."That way, he could keep playing the poor, understanding younger brother who got the cold shoulder from his older brother. But I refused to give him that chance.I stayed bent in a deep bow, not moving a muscle. The room was so quiet I could hear everyone breathing.Kenneth's voice trembled slightly. "You… You don't have to do this…"He was panicking. Then Mom spoke up, her tone much softer. "See, Kenneth? Jonah apologized to you. From now on, if you need anything, just go straight to Jonah fo
