Chapter 5

Author: Nameless
Julia's bracelet was a limited-edition piece of fine jewelry worth six figures.

The hallway fell dead silent in an instant.

Kenneth went rigid, staring at the bracelet on the floor, his face as pale as a sheet.

"I'm… I'm sorry. I didn't mean to!" he stammered, his voice trembling with fear as he teetered on the brink of tears.

Julia was taken aback for a moment, but she spoke gently anyway. "It's okay. It's just a bracelet."

The crowd around them, though, had already erupted into chatter.

"That's a limited edition," someone gasped. "There are only three in the whole country!"

"Can he even afford to pay for it?" another asked.

"He's just some bumpkin from the sticks. He's probably never even seen jewelry like that before."

Whispers buzzed from all sides, every comment jabbing at Kenneth like a needle.

I stood at the edge of the crowd, watching the spectacle with cold indifference. It was perfectly clear to me that the whole thing was a performance he'd meticulously ed.

I remembered clearly that Mom had bought him a full set of imported school supplies—a Staedtler mechanical pencil, a Pilot fountain pen, Moleskine notebooks, and a limited-edition canvas pencil case.

Altogether, they'd cost at least 800 dollars, but he'd deliberately hidden them all away, just so everyone would see how pitiful he looked on the first day of school.

He'd calculated the exact moment Julia would walk past, setting the stage so a pretty girl like her could play savior to a poor, helpless guy like him.

Julia carefully helped Kenneth to his feet, comforting him in soft tones.

From the middle of the crowd, Kenneth zeroed in on me, and a subtle flicker of satisfaction crossed his eyes.

What I hadn't expected was just how quickly his revenge would follow.

…

Evening study hall had just ended when I was summoned to the principal's office.

To my surprise, Mom and Dad were there too, their expressions grim. Kenneth stood in the corner with his head hung low, his eyes red and swollen.

My heart sank.

The moment I walked in, and before I could say a word, Mom snapped at me with a stern expression, "Jonah, how could you be so immature?"

Her tone was harsh, and her displeasure was obvious. "You saw what happened to Kenneth today. You're his older brother. Why didn't you step in and help him?"

"I…" I stammered, caught off guard.

Dad was scowling too. "Kenneth just transferred here. Everything is unfamiliar to him, and he doesn't know a soul. You're the only family he has at this school. When people were laughing at him, you just stood there and watched? Is that how an older brother behaves?"

As they took turns blaming me, I only felt annoyed. They were wasting time I could have spent on practice tests.

It had been no different in my past life. Whenever something happened to Kenneth, the first person my parents blamed wasn't whoever had bullied him—it was me.

In their eyes, because I was the older brother, I was obligated to look after him no matter what—even when he was deliberately putting on an act or when he was scheming against other people.

"Mom, Dad, don't blame Jonah…" Kenneth chimed in right then, his eyes red. "It's my own fault for being so stupid. I didn't even know how to use an automatic door."

The more reasonable and forgiving he sounded, the darker my parents' expressions grew.

Dad looked sternly from the principal to Kenneth's red and swollen eyes, his mind suddenly made up. "Mr. Lane, I'd like to—"

My heart lurched. This was bad!

In my past life, after I transferred to a regular class, I not only ended up in a worse learning environment, but I also became the laughingstock of the whole school.

Meanwhile, Kenneth had seamlessly stepped into my spot in the honors class, claiming every resource that came with it as if it were his birthright.

"I'm sorry!"

My sudden shout cut Dad off mid-sentence.

Everyone froze.

The next second, I turned to face Kenneth, bowed low at a precise 90-degree angle, and said in a loud, clear voice, "I've failed as your older brother!"

Don't go hungry."Dad was always reminding me, "If you need anything, just let me know. Don't try to handle everything on your own."Lenora called me every single week. "Jonah, how have you been? Is school stressing you out? Do you want me to come back and keep you company?"It was their way of trying to make amends and bridge the rift between us.I accepted everything they offered."Thanks.""Got it.""No need. Mom snapped out of her daze and hurried after me."Jonah, wait!" she called, her voice trembling with panic.I stopped, but I didn't turn around."I'm sorry," she choked out. "I was wrong. I shouldn't have doubted you."Dad walked over too, his eyes red-rimmed. "Jonah, I owe you an apology. I should've asked you first instead of just…"He hung his head.Lenora stood beside them, her hands hanging limply at her sides. "Jonah, I was wrong too. I shouldn't have blamed you without asking first."I listened quietly to their belated apologies. Then I brushed it all off as if it were nothing. "Got it."I walked on. Behind me, Mom still wanted to follow, but Dad held her back."Give him some space," Dad said, his voice low and heavy with guilt. The three of them stood rooted in place, watching me walk away, completely at a loss.…When I got back to the classroom, Mason immediately rushed over. "Jonah! Are you okay?""I'm fine," I said flatly, sitting back down at my desk."This

"Jonah, I'm begging you. Just own up to it…" Kenneth pleaded through his tears. The sympathetic murmurs from the audience grew louder."Kenneth's such a good person. Even after all this, he's still pleading for Jonah," someone said.Another agreed, "Seriously. Having an older brother like that is the worst luck in the world."Hearing the crowd's comments, Kenneth could no longer hide the smugness in his eyes. He looked at me, his lips curling into a faint smirk. It was time."Is everyone done watching the video?" I asked, my voice calm and unhurried.Everyone in the auditorium was taken aback."Then could you freeze the footage at the 1:32 mark?" I added, turning to the dean. "And zoom in on that person's profile."The dean looked startled for a moment, then did as I asked. The footage paused. In the frame, the figure stealing the exam questions had just turned around, revealing his profile to the security camera. It was only for a split second, but it was clear enough for ev

"Jonah, say something already!" Mason urged. "The whole school's talking about it. Aren't you going to set the record straight?"I sat at my desk, turning the pages of my book slowly. "No rush.""No rush?" Mason blurted out, on the verge of tears. "Do you have any idea what people out there are saying about you? Some say you stopped at nothing to get into the honors class, and others say your family donated money to the school to hush it up.""Let them talk."I looked up and gazed out the window. Out on the sports field, Kenneth was saying something to a group of girls, looking deeply pained every so often. He was a really good actor, just as he'd been in my past life."The more you rush into things like this, the more likely you are to mess up," I said. "Sit back and watch how it all plays out. That's the only way to see everyone's true colors."…The rumors spread even faster than I'd expected. That same afternoon, Mom and Dad got a call from the school about an emergency me

What burned in Kenneth's eyes was jealousy bordering on madness. The day after the midterm results came out, the school forum blew up.Someone had put up an anonymous post titled, "Shocking! Jonah Shepherd, Ranked Third in His Grade, Stole Exam Questions in Advance—Video Proof Inside."The post described in detail how I'd supposedly cheated. It claimed that the night before the exam, I'd snuck into the academic affairs office and taken pictures of the answer key.Attached below it was a blurry screenshot of security footage. It showed a figure in a school uniform standing at the door of the academic affairs office with his back to the camera. His face wasn't visible, but his build did look somewhat like mine. The comments section exploded instantly."Damn, is this for real?""I knew it. His grades are usually middle-of-the-road, so how did he suddenly score that high?""If this is true, that's way over the line.""But you can't even see his face in the footage. How can anyone

The office went dead silent.Dad's mouth hung open, the rest of his words stuck in his throat as he stared at me blankly.Mom was stunned too. She'd never expected me to apologize to Kenneth so suddenly.Kenneth froze where he stood. His expression shifted erratically—panic and shock flashed in his eyes, along with a trace of disappointment. He'd been waiting for me to fight back, to get into an argument with Mom and Dad, to hear Dad say, "We're going to transfer you to a regular class."That way, he could keep playing the poor, understanding younger brother who got the cold shoulder from his older brother. But I refused to give him that chance.I stayed bent in a deep bow, not moving a muscle. The room was so quiet I could hear everyone breathing.Kenneth's voice trembled slightly. "You… You don't have to do this…"He was panicking. Then Mom spoke up, her tone much softer. "See, Kenneth? Jonah apologized to you. From now on, if you need anything, just go straight to Jonah fo
