"I knew it," Mom sneered.

She pinched the acceptance letter between two fingers like it was a filthy piece of trash. "You've been stupid since you were little. All you ever did was tinker with that useless junk. It'd be a miracle if you actually got into university."

Right in front of all our relatives, she tore the acceptance letter bearing the seal of the Orivelle Institute of Technology, a university known for aerospace studies, in half. The scraps fluttered onto the red carpet in the hotel lobby.

I stared at the torn pieces on the floor without saying a word.

Ten minutes ago, I would have fought desperately to get them back. I would have shouted that it was real, that I'd gotten a perfect SAT score.

But now, that strange text message felt like a bucket of ice water, chilling me to the bone.

"That's enough. Stop embarrassing yourself at the entrance."

Dad frowned as he pulled my younger sister, Winnie Larson, behind him. "Today is Winnie's big day. Stop making a scene."

My brother, Wade Larson, stepped forward and planted his foot on the torn half of my acceptance letter. "Sadie, even if you're jealous of Winnie, you don't have to stoop this low. Forging an acceptance letter from a top-tier university? Are you trying to get yourself arrested?"

Our relatives whispered among themselves, their murmurs pricking at me like a thousand tiny needles.

I lowered my head.

A pair of custom-made leather shoes came into view. It was Henry Carter, my childhood sweetheart, my boyfriend, and the heir to the Carter family.

We had grown up together. When we were 18, he confessed his feelings and promised to protect me for the rest of my life.

He stood there in a perfectly tailored suit, his demeanor gentle and refined, but his eyes were filled with scrutiny.

"Sadie, this is completely unacceptable."

Henry didn't even bother to hear me out. He'd already decided I was guilty.

"Winnie worked herself to the bone to get into Caelmont State University. She stayed up until midnight every night, and she's always been in poor health. Instead of being happy for her, you're pulling a stunt like this just to upset her."

Henry sighed and pulled out a delicate velvet box from his pocket.

I recognized it immediately.

Last month, we were walking past a jewelry shop when I paused to admire a celestial charm bracelet in the window.

Henry had smiled and told me that once my SAT results came out, he'd buy it for me as a gift.

Now, he opened the box right in front of me. Inside lay the expensive bracelet.

He turned around and fastened it around Winnie's wrist. "Winnie, this is for you. A little something to celebrate getting into university."

Winnie gasped and covered her mouth, her eyes instantly filling with tears. "Henry, this is too expensive. Sadie will be mad at me."

She cast a timid glance at me before shrinking behind Henry.

Henry gently patted her shoulder. "She didn't get into university. She doesn't deserve to wear it. You got into university. You deserve this."

Then he turned back to me, his gaze turning cold again. "Sadie, apologize to Winnie."

I looked at the diamonds sparkling on Winnie's wrist and adjusted my glasses.

The left temple of my glasses had snapped two days ago after Winnie sat on them. I'd held them together with clear tape, just enough to keep them on my face.

Back then, Henry had told me that once the SAT was over, he'd take me to get the best, lightest pair of anti-blue light glasses he could find.

Now, I realized his promises were nothing more than empty words.

I met Winnie's eyes, my voice calm. "I'm sorry."

There were no tears, no protest, and no attempt to defend myself.

Henry froze for a moment.

Normally, whenever something like this happened, I would argue with him through tearful eyes, desperately trying to prove my innocence.

But this time, I'd given in without a fight.

The surprise on his face quickly faded, replaced by a look of satisfaction. "That's more like it. She's your sister. You shouldn't be so petty about every little thing."

Out of habit, he reached out to ruffle my hair.

I turned my head, avoiding his touch.

Five years later, a grand ceremony was being held in Orivelle Grand Hall to honor the successful launch of the Orionis-9 Heavy-Lift Rocket.I stood at the center of the stage in a sharply tailored black suit, wearing a pair of lightweight rimless glasses. The national honor medal pinned to my chest gleamed beneath the lights. As the youngest chief engineer on the project, I took the stage on behalf of the team and gave a speech.Thunderous applause filled the hall as camera flashes lit up the room like a sea of stars.I looked out at the pioneers who had devoted their lives to the nation's space program and thanked them.As I stepped off the stage, Brian patted me proudly on the shoulder. "Sadie, you did it."I smiled. "This is only the beginning."…Meanwhile, in a basement in Roston, the ceremony was playing live on a phone screen.Henry sat on a worn folding bed in a threadbare jacket, staring at me on the screen—the woman who now seemed to shine brighter than anyone else.

My family was dumbfounded. Mom stood there with her mouth half open, tears still clinging to her cheeks. She looked almost comical, like a puppet with its strings cut."What… What did you say?" Wade stammered. "Sadie is a researcher? How is that possible? She just started university!"Henry ignored them. He pushed Winnie's hand away and strode out of the airport. But my family didn't stop there. When they learned that I hadn't ended up on the streets and had instead become a researcher at Orivelle Institute of Technology, their first reaction wasn't guilt. It was excitement.Dad slapped his thigh, the worry on his face instantly replaced by a smug grin. "I knew we had good genes! If Sadie has really made something of herself, then Winnie's problem should be easy to fix!"Mom nodded eagerly. "Exactly! Winnie's her sister. She can't just stand by and watch her get expelled. All she has to do is tell the university that she gave Winnie those materials. Then they won't expel Winni

"I don't need you to buy me glasses out of pity, and I don't need to go back to Roston with you," I said flatly.I tore the ID badge from my chest and held it up in front of him. The words were unmistakable—"Core Researcher, National Key Aerospace Project, Sadie Larson".Henry stared at the title, his eyes widened in shock. His face went deathly pale. The words seemed to cut straight through him. "Core… researcher?"He repeated the words under his breath, his tall frame swaying slightly. He had always thought I was a useless nobody who could only survive by clinging to him and my family.Yet now, I was studying at Orivelle Institute of Technology and had become a researcher he would have to make an appointment just to meet."Sadie…" He spoke again, but the certainty in his voice was gone. Instead, it trembled. "Why didn't you tell me? You've got a perfect score on the SAT. Why did you admit at Winnie's celebration banquet that you hadn't gotten into university?"He looked at

  • Reborn: I Won't Give Up My Future Again   Chapter 6

My family was in complete chaos in Roston. After finding out I'd really gotten into Orivelle Institute of Technology, Dad was beside himself with regret. "That brat! She got a perfect score on the SAT and never said a word! She made us look like fools in front of all our relatives."Mom was bitter. "She did it on purpose! She saw us fussing over Winnie and got jealous. She pretended she hadn't gotten into university just to watch us make fools of ourselves! What an ingrate!"Wade ran a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated. "What's the point of complaining now? She's already gone, and she'd blocked every one of us! Where are we supposed to get 10,000 dollars for Winnie's computer and camera?"Henry sat in the corner of the couch, his brow furrowed deeply. He pulled out his phone, opened my chat, and tried to send me a message. The second he sent it, a single gray check mark appeared beside the message. It had been sent, but it hadn't been delivered. He stared at the screen in

The entire living room fell dead silent."Mr. Larson, what did Ms. Lowe just say?" Henry asked, his face stunned in disbelief. "What top scorer? What university?"Dad stood there stiffly, his mind reeling. He didn't even notice the cigarette burning his fingers. After a long moment, he bent down to pick up his phone, his voice hoarse. "Ms. Lowe said… Sadie got a perfect score on the SAT. Orivelle Institute of Technology has already accepted her.""Impossible!" Mom screamed, shooting to her feet. "She's always been a terrible student! She could barely get into an ordinary university. How could she possibly get a perfect score?""Ms. Lowe must've gotten it wrong! Maybe it's someone with the same name!" Wade quickly chimed in.Mom nodded. "Exactly! At the celebration banquet, she personally admitted that she didn't get into university. We all saw that acceptance letter. It was obviously forged. How could it possibly be real?"Winnie sat on the couch, her fingers twisting the hem o
