Chapter 5

Author: Flowering Tree
The last flicker of hope in my heart was snuffed out.

Gideon looked down at me with a cold, detached stare. “Evelyn, you really have gone insane.”

Then, he stepped closer. With deliberate cruelty, he crushed his boot down on my arm. “Which hand did you use to stab her?”

I did not respond. I did not even have the strength to open my mouth. My body felt lifeless, like a corpse.

“Not talking? Fine.”

He drew a silver pistol and, without hesitation, pulled the trigger.

Two deafening shots exploded.

A bullet in each hand.

The pain ripped through me, white-hot and unbearable. Tears burst from my eyes.

Gideon did not even flinch. He simply slid the gun back into its holster.

“Evelyn, that was your final warning. If you ever hurt Bella again, we’re done.”

My parents’ smiles faltered when they heard his last sentence. They rushed to speak.

“This vile woman will only cause more trouble, Don Wade! You should get rid of her at once. How can we ever feel at ease while she’s still around?”

My parents took turns hurling insults. In their eyes, I was trash, a burden, and a disgrace—someone who deserved to die.

However, I was their daughter too.

When Bella left home, I was the one who stayed behind to care for them. I was the one who took them on trips, who sat by their hospital beds when they were sick, and prayed for their recovery.

After everything I did for them, all I got in return were insults.

“Don Wade, the family doctor is here!”

Soon, Bella was lifted onto a stretcher.

The doctor suddenly froze. Her white pants were soaked red, yet the stab wound was clearly in her abdomen.

Gideon noticed immediately. He seized the doctor’s wrist. “What’s going on? Why is she bleeding there? Did… she stab her somewhere else?”

The doctor examined the wound. “Please calm down, Don Wade. From what I can tell, Ms. Bella might have suffered… a miscarriage.”

“What?” Gideon’s head shot up. His hands shook uncontrollably.

My mother collapsed to the ground, crying out, “The baby… The baby’s gone?”

Gideon frowned. “What baby? When did she get pregnant?”

My mother wiped her tears. “It was right after the party. She wanted to surprise you with the news in a few days…”

With every word she spoke, the pain in Gideon’s eyes deepened.

As he looked at the blood streaming down Bella’s thigh, for the first time, the usually stern and unflinching man teared up.

“No… My child…”

Everyone in the family knew that years ago, Gideon had taken a bullet to the abdomen during a gang shootout. The doctors said it left him nearly infertile.

I understood everything now.

My parents’ desperation to make Bella his wife was because she was pregnant.

However, why would she risk losing her own baby just to set me up…

Before I could make sense of it, Gideon’s bloodshot eyes turned to me. There was grief in them, but also bitter, crushing disappointment.

How ironic.

His voice was hoarse when he said, “She killed my child. She’ll pay for that. No one is to treat her wounds.”

The room fell silent.

Randel looked at him with disbelief, but Gideon’s icy gaze silenced him instantly. “If anyone dares speak for her again, they can die with her.”

Then, he turned around and walked away. His silhouette grew smaller and smaller until the world around me dimmed to black.

When I woke up again, the cell was empty. The blood on my body had already dried.

Tears streamed down my face. It was not from the pain but from the hollow ache in my chest.

I realized the heartbeat that once fluttered inside me was gone. My baby was dead, killed by his own father.

The day Gideon was expelled from the family, I released him. Before we parted, he looked at me with a long, unreadable stare.“Evelyn, you’re still too soft. You spared me, and in doing so, you’ve given me another chance to take you back.”I secretly let out a cold snort but kept my expression calm. Zerrick, however, showed no restraint. His expression went dark. “You won’t get that chance.” As he spoke, he drew his gun and aimed it at Gideon. It was just like Gideon had aimed at him in the beginning. However, he did not pull the trigger to kill. Two shots rang out instead. One struck Gideon’s left arm, the other his right. Blood spurted, and he collapsed to his knees in pain.“She held back because her heart is soft. Mine isn't. I always settle my scores.”The guards later said Gideon staggered back to his family's residence drenched in blood, but no one recognized him. Hence, he pushed aside his tangled hair to reveal his face. The guards were stunned for a moment, giving G

On the third day of Gideon’s imprisonment, he still refused to eat.I knew what he was doing. He was gambling, assuming that I would not have the heart to let him die. He was right. I did not want him dead.It was not because I still cared but because I valued life more than he ever did.Besides, this ridiculous revenge of his had already cost too many innocent lives. So, I brought the food myself and went to see him.He looked haggard and was a shadow of himself, though it had only been a few days. For some reason, I almost laughed. Just a few months ago, the scene had played out in reverse.Only this time, he was the one behind bars, and I was the one on the outside.“Eat it.” I tossed the lunchbox in front of him.He barely looked at it, then turned his head, making it clear he would not eat.I let out a sigh, picked the fork up from the floor, and aimed it at my wrist.“If you don’t eat, I’ll stab myself right here.”The next second, the fork was snatched out of my ha

“Let go of me! I’m going to save him!”Randel held me tightly in his arms. “Madam, it’s too late. If you go, there’s only death waiting for you!”I screamed and cried until my throat was hoarse. Eventually, I clutched my stomach in pain and curled up into a ball.Randel hurriedly got me into the car, but the fire was spreading too fast.“Damn it!”The car screeched to a stop on the roadside. I was in too much pain to move. I said in a soft voice, “Go. Just leave me.”Before he could respond, someone pushed him aside. “You go first. I’ll protect her.”It was Gideon. His white shirt was burned and tattered at the hem. His face was streaked with blood and soot.“But… Boss…”“I said, go!”Randel gave us a long, meaningful look, then turned around and left.Gideon lifted me around the waist and ran toward the distant mountains. His sweat dripped onto my face, drop by drop. The night was pitch-black. He could not see the path clearly, and the brambles along the roadside tore a

“What?”Gideon froze instantly. He immediately looked down at my belly, and it was completely flat.“No… That’s not possible…” He lowered his head and muttered. His eyes reddened to the point of bleeding. In a heartbeat, he had my shoulders in a furious grip.“How could the child be gone? Did you… Did you do it? Evelyn, do you hate me that much?!”My disgust only deepened when I heard his hysterical shout.“Me? I did it? This child's death… It was you. It was their father who killed them with his own hands. No child could survive what I endured in that dungeon.”Gideon was dumbfounded.I brushed past him and turned to Zerrick. “Can you carry me back? I can’t walk anymore.”He hesitated for a moment, then nodded with a smile. Instead of just carrying me, he scooped me up around the waist.Gideon rushed forward immediately, but a dozen armed soldiers blocked him. He had forgotten that this was Zerrick’s territory in Denomia. All he could do was watch the man he despised carry

  • Reborn, I’m Done Being The Don’s Wife   Chapter 10

Evelyn's POV:I finally arrived in Denomia. I chose this place not only because Gideon had no power here but also because it was once my dream. I wanted to be a battlefield doctor. After I married Gideon, he would not let me work. He said other people would get close to me, and that would put him at risk.Even though I never graduated from medical school, the years spent at Gideon’s side had taught me the essentials of emergency medicine. Those were skills I learned not only to protect him but to keep myself alive.Over the years, I had watched many people die in front of me.Ruthless drug lords and even innocent bystanders were dragged into the crossfire. Every time someone went down, I felt unbearably sad. That was one big difference between me and Gideon. He felt nothing toward any of it. A Don like him could not afford compassion. He had to be cold and ruthless to protect his people. The cold and indifferent look on his face still made my chest ache.It was like my hand i
