Soul Vault

I had just finished making scrambled eggs for myself for dinner in my newly rented space, a secluded, unpretentious apartment located miles away from the Hamilton villa, in a place where even Alex wouldn't be able to locate me.

Standing alone in the quiet kitchen, holding a plate of warm food that I didn't have to share or seek approval for, a strange, quiet sensation washed over me. For three agonizing years, my evenings had been defined by walking on eggshells. I remembered how Alexander used to inspect the dining table with a cold, critical eye, complaining if the soup was a fraction too cool or if I looked too tired to entertain his snobbish friends. I remembered his mother's sharp, condescending remarks, reminding me daily that a "countryside stray" should be grateful just to sit at their table. They forgot how I had helped Alexander build his company when it was almost crumbling under so much debt, with no investors willing to help.

None of that mattered anymore.

The quiet in this room was now mine.

I set the plate down on the marble counter and stared at it, taking a deep breath to focus my mind. It was time to test the spatial vault, the dormant royal bloodline realm that had awakened inside my soul upon my rebirth.

I raised my palm over the plate and concentrated on the hidden space within my spirit.

Store, I commanded in my mind.

With a barely perceptible ripple in the air, the plate of eggs vanished completely from the counter. I closed my eyes and turned my awareness inward.

Deep within my soul, a vast, twilight-hued expanse stretched out into infinity. Floating near the center was my plate of eggs.

I focused on it, observing the tiny wisps of steam frozen midair, completely suspended in time.

There was no heat loss.

No decay.

No passage of seconds or minutes.

Retrieve, I willed.

In an instant, the plate reappeared on the counter right beneath my hand. A smirk escaped me as I touched the rim of the dish. It was radiating the exact same heat as when I had cooked it seconds ago.

I took a small bite with my fork. It was piping hot, perfectly moist, and untouched by the transfer.

A cold, razor-sharp feeling settled deep in my chest.

It fucking works.

This wasn't just a storage space. It was an absolute time capsule. In sixty days, when the global cataclysm hit and the entire world turned into an ice-choked wasteland, food would become more precious than gold. While others would be killing each other over moldy crusts of bread or frozen trash, I could pull out steaming, fresh meals as if they had just left the stove. I would store medicine and hoodies too. My soul vault was the ultimate key to my survival and my revenge.

I took the plate over to the small wooden table in the corner and pulled out a notebook to map out my initial procurement plan. I had liquidated my personal savings, money I had spent years quietly saving from selling off the small pieces of jewelry my late mother had left behind before she died. It amounted to roughly two hundred thousand dollars.

Working as a dumb secretary to my husband was like pouring water into nothing.

"You work for me as my secretary, I take care of every bill you need." Those were his stupid words.

The money wasn't enough to buy out major industrial supply yards, but it was enough to secure the essentials before I tapped into bigger resources: high-density grains, antibiotics, thermal gear, and fuel.

As my pen moved across the paper, the sudden, violent vibration of my phone startled me.

The screen flashed brightly on the wooden surface. The caller ID blared a single name in big black letters: ALEXANDER.

I didn't reach for the phone.

I didn't rush to answer it like I used to, trembling with anxiety over what I might have done wrong. I simply leaned back in my chair, resting my chin on my hand, and watched the screen pulse with a dead, unblinking glare.

In my past life, if Alexander called and I didn't pick up on the first ring, he would barrage me with insults, accusing me of being incompetent or ungrateful. I used to scramble to explain myself, swallowing my pride just to keep the peace.

The call timed out and went straight to voicemail. Less than five seconds later, the screen lit up again.

Ring. Ring. Ring.

He called three times in a row, his impatience escalating through the screen. When I didn't answer, the notifications began pouring in as rapid-fire text messages:

[ALEXANDER: Where the hell are you? I brought my mother and friends home for dinner, and the house is completely dark.]

[ALEXANDER: What is the meaning of this childish act, Lavina? Get back to the villa immediately and cook. You are embarrassing me in front of my guests.]

[ALEXANDER: Did you think dropping your ring on the table would make me panic? Drop this pathetic act and answer your phone!]

I read every single word, a bitter, amused smile touching my lips.

He truly believed this was a temper tantrum. He thought I was sitting in some cheap motel room, crying into a pillow and waiting for him to notice my absence so I could come crawling back. Three years of my quiet submission had convinced him that I was a spineless, helpless tool who existed only to serve him.

Then, a final text flashed across the screen, dripping with his signature, unearned arrogance:

[ALEXANDER: Enjoy sleeping on the street. Don't bother begging me to let you back in when you freeze tonight. Who knows which man you'll open your legs for this time for shelter.]

The word freeze hit my chest like a physical strike.

My mind flashed back to the warehouse, the suffocating duct tape over my mouth, the heavy nylon ropes tearing through my skin, the agonizing pain in my abdomen as my unborn child slipped away, and the ice slowly creeping up my legs while Alexander walked away without looking back. He had left me to rot in the cold, telling me to "reflect on my selfishness," with no food or water.

Freeze tonight? I thought, my knuckles turning white as I clenched my fist under the table. Alex, you have no idea what real freezing feels like. But in sixty days, I will make sure you learn.

I didn't reply.

I didn't have to waste a single letter or drop of emotional energy on him. I didn't block his number either. I wanted his messages to stack up endlessly in the dark. I wanted him to send fifty more arrogant texts, growing progressively more furious as the hours bled into days and the obedient wife he took for granted never returned to scrub his floors again.

I slid my finger across the settings, switched the phone to Do Not Disturb, and laid it face down on the table. The silence returned to the room, absolute and sweet.

Just as I stood up, a quiet, encrypted chime sounded from my secondary device, a private satellite phone I had purchased earlier that morning.

I picked it up.

An unmarked email from an encrypted server flashed on the screen:

[STONE HOLDINGS, LEGAL DIVISION: Your formal severance from the Winslet Family Register has been legally filed and certified by the municipal court. As per the revised alliance agreement, your presence is required at Stone Manor tomorrow at 09:00 AM to execute the formal Betrothal Contract with Damien Stone.]

Attached to the message was a digital authorization certificate: an unrestricted, black-tier credit line issued under my legal name, funded directly by the Stone family's central accounts.

A cold, silent wave of triumph washed over me.

Frederick Winslet thought he was discarding his worthless daughter to protect his precious Stephanie from a dying recluse. Alexander thought I was weeping on the street, homeless and broke.

Neither of them realized that, in their greed and arrogance, they had just handed me the keys to unmatched military and industrial wealth.

Damien Stone, the feared, reclusive heir rumored to be on his deathbed, was about to become my ultimate shield.

And with the Stone family's infinite capital in my hands, my soul vault would soon be filled to the brim before the world drowned in ice.

I walked over to the window, looking out at the distant city lights flickering in the autumn air.

"Enjoy your dinner, Alex," I whispered softly into the quiet room. "It's the last warm meal you'll ever have because of me."

The notification from my burner phone broke the silence inside the empty warehouse.I already knew what it was before I picked it up. The Winslet family's elite group chat was flooded with unread messages, one after another. It had started with a batch of high-resolution photos sent from an unknown number. The private investigator Alexander had hired to follow me had done his job. In the pictures, I stood alone beside towering pallets of supplies, surrounded by sacks of cheap flour and piles of canned beans. The chat quickly filled with cruel jokes, laughing emojis, and insulting memes."Good God, look at her," my aunt typed, followed by a string of laughing emojis. "Is she opening a shelter for stray dogs, or is she preparing to hibernate like a bear?""More like she's stocking a nuclear bunker because she got kicked out onto the street with nothing," one of my cousins replied. "What an embarrassment to the Winslet name. Imagine falling this far."My phone vibrated again. This time,

The industrial district on the western edge of the city was filled with wholesale warehouses. Diesel fumes mixed with dust as forklifts moved pallets of goods in and out of the loading bays. With the Stone family's Black Tier credit card in my pocket, I didn't waste any time.I stood inside one of the city's largest agricultural supply depots, watching hydraulic lifts lower stacks of 50-pound sacks of white rice, unbleached flour, and cooking oil. Nearby, wooden crates held thousands of cans of preserved beef, condensed milk, and dried beans. It was enough food to feed a small village for years. The warehouse manager approached with a clipboard tucked under his arm. A thick gold chain hung around his neck as he studied the enormous invoice. His eyes moved from the order to my simple clothes, and a mocking smile spread across his face."You're buying half my grain stock, miss." He gave a short laugh. "Cash upfront, no questions asked. I'm not turning down money, but what does a young

The restaurant was bathed in warm, golden chandelier light, smelling faintly of truffles, aged wine, and effortless luxury. It was the kind of upscale establishment where society elites gathered to flaunt their status, laughing over white-clothed tables while the city outside hummed with oblivious routine.Alexander sat near the center of the dining room, a crystal glass of red wine catching the light as he raised it toward Stephanie. He was celebrating.Celebrating his "freedom" from a marriage he viewed as a burden, celebrating the clean break from a woman he thought he had completely crushed. Stephanie sat across from him, draped in a designer silk dress that cost more than a month's groceries for an average family, her laughter ringing out clear and sharp to draw the attention of nearby tables."To new beginnings, Alex," Stephanie purred, her fingers brushing against his across the table. "And to finally clearing out the dead weight."Alexander smiled, leaning in to clink his glas

Alexander's POVThe house was calm and empty the moment I stepped inside with my mother and a few friends I had invited over for dinner.Lavina used to work as my secretary at the office, but for days she had stopped coming in, citing some ridiculous illness or clumsy excuse. I had tolerated her little acts of defiance because she was usually quiet and predictable, always waiting in the shadows to serve me the moment I walked through the door.I walked straight toward the dining area, anticipating the warm scent of cooked meals and the usual sight of her fussing over the table setting.Instead, the place felt cold and empty. The lights were off, and the kitchen was pitch-black and dead quiet. There was no soup simmering on the stove, no fresh bread, not even a glass of water laid out.My mother scoffed behind me, adjusting her designer coat with an annoyed sigh."Is this how your wife entertains guests, Alexander?" she sneered, her heels clicking loudly against the marble floor.
