Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
Tears streamed down my face.

But rushing in now would do nothing.

The killer's knife slashed wildly in every direction—if I got close, I'd be cut down instantly.

I sprinted downstairs, dialing the police as I ran.

"Help! The killer is in the hospital—my husband is going to be hacked to death!"

After struggling through the snow, I finally made it to the security booth.

When I saw the two guards—both at least seventy years old—I nearly broke down in despair.

After hearing me out, the police told me not to act rashly. They were on their way.

The moment I hung up, my phone chimed.

A message—from my husband.

[Cindy, the killer went straight after you!

[I can see you now—you're at the security booth, right?

[Listen to me. Go to the underground parking garage. My car is in its usual spot!]

I looked up.

Sure enough, I caught a distant glimpse of his back as he stepped away from a window.

I texted back, asking whether the killer had taken the stairs or the elevator—but there was no reply.

He must have been on his way down, too busy to check his phone.

With no choice but to take a chance, I slipped back into the emergency stairwell.

The hospital was eerily dark tonight. Only a few emergency lights remained, casting a cold, pallid glow along my path.

I tried to steady my ragged breathing, my body shivering uncontrollably from the cold.

At three in the morning, the underground parking garage was utterly silent. No matter how lightly I stepped, I couldn't avoid making some noise. All I could do was pray my luck wouldn't be so terrible as to run straight into the killer.

But of course, the very thing I feared happened.

Not far away, a shadow flickered past.

I dropped into a crouch at once, hiding behind the massive frame of an SUV.

Holding my breath, I peered out, trying to see which direction he would go.

He scanned the surroundings—then suddenly lay flat on the ground.

He was looking through the gaps between the tires… searching for my feet.

My scalp prickled as terror shot through me. I grabbed the car handle, bracing my feet against the side, hauling myself up.

Just before my strength gave out and I slipped, he turned and walked away at a slow pace.

I exhaled sharply, relief crashing over me.

The moment I spotted my husband's license plate, I nearly burst into tears of joy.

But I didn't have the key. I could only unlock it through the mobile app.

And when it unlocked, it would make a loud sound—basically a death sentence.

I gripped my phone tightly, my palms drenched in cold sweat.

Then—

The piercing wail of sirens erupted outside.

The police!

I was going to be saved!

But that shadow returned, striding quickly in my direction.

My hands shook violently. Using the cover of the sirens, I unlocked the car and slipped smoothly inside.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

Holding my breath, I slid down, keeping myself below the line of sight through the windows.

In this life, my husband had been gravely injured because of me. I had to survive.

I pulled out my phone and sent a message to the police captain: [The killer is near Parking Area A, Lot 15. Please come save me!]

Moments later, my phone vibrated in my palm.

It was the captain's reply: [Ms. Parker, you're safe now. Don't be afraid. We've apprehended the suspect on the fourth floor of the hospital. It's the wanted criminal. We're taking him back to the station now.]

What?

The next second, a soft, crisp tapping sound came from above me.

My whole body trembled as I slowly lifted my head.

The masked man rested his head gently against the glass.

Those pitch-black rabbit eyes stared straight at me.

The bindings were cut away. A sharp, tingling numbness surged through my wrists and ankles as blood rushed back. But I barely felt it.All that remained was the hollow weakness of someone who had narrowly survived death. My body trembled uncontrollably. After that, I gave countless statements at the police station.Ethan was formally arrested. But he never revealed his motive. The last time I saw him was through a pane of glass at the detention center. He wore a prison uniform, his expression calm—almost gentle. The officer asked, "Ethan, as far as we know, you and your wife had a good marriage for five years. Why did you suddenly choose to kill her this way?"He lifted his gaze, looking toward the one-way glass. He knew I was watching."Because a serial killer happened to appear nearby. If I copied his methods and killed Cindy, no one would suspect me. A perfect plan, isn't it?"A perfect plan.Sitting behind the glass, a bone-deep cold spread from the soles of my feet to th

"You—!"I forced out a single word as I struggled. In the final moment before my consciousness sank into darkness, his voice slipped softly into my ear, laced with a smile."Silly Cindy. It's not poison—but in that dosage, it's enough to make you sleep for a good, long while."My awareness clawed its way back through a haze of sharp, suffocating fear.A dull ache throbbed at the back of my head. My eyelids felt as heavy as lead. With effort, I pried them open a sliver and saw the bedroom ceiling.I was tied to the bed.My limbs were bound tightly to the bedposts with tough strips of cloth, pulled so taut that the restricted blood flow brought a numb, prickling pain.I tried to struggle, but it only drove the bindings deeper into my flesh."You're awake?"The familiar voice came from beside the bed.My neck turned stiffly.Ethan sat there in a chair. He had changed into dark loungewear and was wearing disposable sterile gloves. On the mobile cart beside him, a set of instr

"Ms. Parker."The captain spoke in a measured, official tone, laced with reassurance."You've been through a severe shock. The mental strain is significant—we understand these stress reactions."I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.Ethan stepped to my side and slipped off his heavy coat, draping it gently over my shoulders. His movements were soft and attentive. He sighed, his smile tired yet sincere."Thank you, Captain. We're really sorry to trouble you. My wife's been under a lot of stress lately. I'll take her to the hospital for a proper checkup another day."A checkup.Psychiatry.My fists clenched instantly, nails digging into my palms. If I said now that he wanted to kill me, I'd only sound more insane—proving his point. The captain nodded."All right. Go home and get some rest. The snow's heavy—be careful. Contact us if anything comes up.""Of course, of course." Ethan thanked him repeatedly, his arm wrapping lightly around my shoulders—firm, leaving no room

Love?My stomach churned."Save it for yourself, Ethan."I cut him off, my back pressed tightly against the seat."The police are upstairs. I just contacted them—see?"I quickly lit up my phone screen, then turned it off again, pretending to check."They're asking where I am. If I don't reply, they'll get suspicious and come down immediately. Ethan, if you kill me, there's no way you're getting out of this."His pupils shrank.I caught that fleeting hesitation. Now!I lunged forward and slammed my entire palm down on the center of the steering wheel with all my strength."BEEEEEP—!!!"The deafening horn exploded through the enclosed garage.Ethan hadn't seen it coming. At such close range, the sound hit him full force. My fingers clenched tightly around my phone, the joints going rigid. I could almost hear my bones grinding. They'd caught him. Then who… was the one outside the car?The answer struck like a needle driven into my temple, sharp and blinding. Every inconsistency snapped together in an instant. He knew the layout of the house like the back of his hand. He could open the front door with ease. No matter where I hid, he could always find me.It wasn't because the killer was some omnipotent monster. It was because—The killer was the master of that house. My husband. The man I had shared a bed with for five years.Behind the rabbit mask, his gaze clung to my face, as if savoring every flicker of my fear.He lifted his hand, knuckles curling, and tapped—slow, deliberate—against the glass beside the driver's seat.Tap.
