Chapter 3

Author: Moore
Stella noticed the drastic shift in Alexander's mood, and her expression stiffened briefly.

Soon, she broke into a smile. "You're quite lucky, aren't you, Ms. Sage? You have two amazing brothers who care so much about you. I can't help but feel envious. I think Alex is great. Perhaps you should consider—"

"That's ridiculous. Lolo is my sister!" Alexander said with a frown, his eyes full of helplessness despite her unfinished sentence.

I nodded in agreement. "Yeah. I've only ever seen Alexander as my brother. Ms. Lockhart, you shouldn't joke about things like this again. Honestly, I think you two are more suited to each other than I am."

Alexander's face instantly went ashen. He ground his teeth and enunciated, "Yeah? Should I introduce you to someone else, then?"

"That'd be great. Thank you, Alexander," I answered softly with a gentle smile, without a hint of resistance on my face.

With a loud crash, he overturned the glass on the table. He seemed not to notice as he strode toward the door without even saying a word to Stella.

She muttered an apology and hurried after him. Before leaving, she shot me a long, intense glance, an expression I couldn't quite read.

My chest tightened, and an inexplicable unease settled.

Meanwhile, the always clueless Christopher didn't realize a thing. He simply grumbled, "What's wrong with him this time? That temper of his never changes! I don't even know how he managed to find a mate!"

Indeed—seven years together, and I had tolerated his temper endlessly. Thinking back now, I realized I had been foolish.

I didn't continue talking to Christopher about him. Instead, I brought up my plans for further study. "Hey, Chris? I'm planning to book a flight three days from now and head to Northmoon early."

He blinked in surprise. "So soon? I thought the semester wasn't starting for another month. This is all happening so fast… You haven't even told Alex about your plans."

I shook my head lightly, speaking both to him and to myself. "I don't have to. He doesn't need to know, anyway. My matters are no longer his concern."

I assumed my life would no longer intersect with Alexander and Stella from then on, but the day before I was to leave, she personally called me to the edge of the forest, saying she had something important to tell me.

I hadn't wanted to go, but she seemed to anticipate my refusal and said outright, "I figured your relationship with Alex isn't ordinary. If you don't want your brother to find out, you'd better come."

A strange tightness gripped my chest. I honestly didn't want Christopher learning about my messy past with Alexander right before I left.

That day, Stella wore a bright, flowing dress. She looked radiant. The first thing she said when we met was blunt, almost accusatory. "Willow, I knew you had something going on with Alex!"

My heart sank, but I still denied it. "He's always just been a brother to me. How could there be anything between us?"

There never should've been anything beyond friendship between us. Denying our relationship was nothing more than returning to where it all started.

Stella looked dubious and refused to let go. "Really? You don't like him at all? Aside from me, you're the she-wolf he's closest to. If there was nothing between you two, why would he be so close to you?"

"I really don't. He's only close to me because he's best friends with Chris. Besides, he told me himself that he plans to hold a mating ceremony with you, for the sake of your pup."

Ever since I died alone and miserably in my previous life, I had decided to let them have their wish and be together.

Delight flashed across Stella's eyes, but a strange, unsettling smile quickly replaced it. "He really said that? I don't believe it. To see if you're telling the truth, I'll first have to do… this."

As she spoke, she suddenly stepped closer to me. A bad feeling surged through me. I turned to run, but she grabbed my arm and pulled me alongside into the swamp.

Mud and water rushed up around us, carrying rotting leaves and a fetid stench. I struggled on instinct, yet the harder I fought, the faster I sank. A swamp had no bottom, and it gave no one time to react.

My breathing fell apart. Beside me, Stella screamed, stretching her hand toward the forest path. That was when I saw two figures sprinting toward us—Alexander and Christopher.

In a daze, I watched Alexander rush to Stella without hesitation. He plunged half his body into the swamp and dragged her out of the sucking mud.

What was I even hoping for?

Thankfully, Christopher arrived in time and pulled me free. As I watched Alexander's retreating figure, I refused Christopher's suggestion to take me to the infirmary.

Hoarsely, I said, "Take me straight to the airport, Chris. I want to get out of here now."

My luggage had already been packed, so I changed my flight to the earliest available. After taking a quick shower, I left the pack without looking back.

In the infirmary, Alexander lay on the stone bed, his face as pale as paper.Lyla avoided his gaze and spoke solemnly. "The silverbane has eaten away your wolf. It's gone. It'll never return."He had once been the pride of the pack, a ruler who could tear through the night itself. Now, he was only an empty shell, stripped of his spirit.Alexander closed his eyes in pain, but a single figure stubbornly appeared in his mind.It wasn't his father, currently buried by the weight of the council's pressure. It wasn't Lyla, who had just delivered a cruel sentence. And it certainly wasn't Stella, who had essentially taken away his soul with her dagger. It was me.If only he had looked at me one more time back then. If only he hadn't taken my waiting and love for granted. If only, when caught between Stella and responsibility, he had walked toward me sooner…Alas, no amount of regret could change the present. Now, he lay there, stripped of everything, while the she-wolf who once regarde

The news quickly spread through the pack.Alexander had been poisoned with silverbane, directly harming his wolf. His wolf let out one last howl before completely vanishing. In the pack's council hall, the Elders' shouts nearly shook the roof. "He's lost his wolf!"The chief Elder slammed his cane on the ground, his voice burning with rage. "He'll no longer be our Alpha!"The guards escorted Stella inside, her clothes still stained with Alexander's blood, hair disheveled and plastered to her face."I did nothing wrong!" she declared, her voice hoarse but firm as she met the Elders' judging eyes."Exile her from the pack! She must never set foot here again!"The cold verdict fell upon her. Two strong werewolves dragged her out of the council hall. The sunlight made her squint, but she looked back toward the infirmary where the werewolf she loved lay. She didn't regret it in the slightest. If she couldn't have him, she would destroy him. This was her final gift to herself.…

Alexander rushed back to the pack's infirmary in a blind panic, only to find Stella sitting there perfectly fine. Aside from looking a little pale, she seemed normal."You lied to me?"Alexander's anger flared. He turned around, ready to leave. She lunged forward and clung to him, tears streaming down her face. "I just wanted to see you! Why are you being so cruel to me? You promised me you'd form a mate bond with me! Why are you going back on it?"He tried to shake her off. "I've never said anything like that!""You did!" she shrieked. "Willow told me herself! She said you'd hold a mating ceremony with me for me and my pup!"Alexander was stunned. "Willow told you… that? That was drunk nonsense! It can't be taken seriously!"He struggled again, clearly no longer focused on her at all. All he wanted now was to return to Northmoon and explain everything to me.The moment he tried to leave, a look of utter despair and madness flashed through Stella's eyes. Suddenly, she pulled a

That Sunday, I was training with Hunter when a familiar shout rang out from outside the hall. When I looked up, I was met with Alexander's burning gaze. His expression was a tangled mess—relief, regret, and heavy guilt."I finally found you," he murmured, his voice rough and hoarse.I looked at him coldly. "What are you doing here?""Lolo, listen to me. I think you misunderstood. I didn't know you were in the swamp, too. If I'd known, I would've never…"Alexander's voice trailed off, almost dissolving into the air."You didn't know because all you could see was her," I said calmly."No, that's not it. I'm sorry, Lolo. I shouldn't have ignored you during that time. I was wrong not to cherish you. "Lolo, we were clearly dating. Why did you deny it? Why are you treating me like this? Please, give me another chance.""Another chance?" I scoffed, eyes cold when I looked at him. "Did you forget what you said that night? You told me that for Stella and her pup, you'd hold a mating c

Life at Northmoon Academy was just like the winter here, biting and hard.Training, classes, and rest were packed tightly into every moment of the day. By nightfall, I was so exhausted that I fell asleep the instant my head touched the pillow. The memories of the pack faded just like that, scattered and buried underneath the dry wind and Northmoon's snow.In the third week of the semester, a sudden blizzard halted all outdoor training. Outside the window was a roaring white world. My roommate, Elise Clawford, fished a leather wineskin out of her locker, as if she were pulling a secret treasure. She winked at me, explaining, "Authentic Frostwolf Ale—I smuggled it in. Let's celebrate surviving these first two brutal weeks!"Amber liquid sloshed into wooden cups, carrying the sharp scent of pine resin and snow. I took small sips. After the burn came a strange warmth, spreading from my throat down into my stomach.Elise told stories about her homeland. Somewhere between one cup and

Alexander didn't answer. He grabbed Christopher and dragged him outside, only to rush once more toward my cabin. He tore through the place like a madman, yanking open every drawer.Inside, there used to be the birthday scarf I had knitted for him, the wrist guards I had sewn from beast skin, and so many other things I had hand-made.Back then, he had only glanced at them before pushing the drawer shut. "Leave them here for now. It wouldn't look good if others saw."Now, the drawers were empty."Where's the stuff?" he murmured, his fingers brushing over the bare wooden bottom. "She kept everything… here."He suddenly spun around to face Christopher, who was leaning against the doorway. Alexander's voice trembled as he said, "I swear she kept all of it! The scarf, the wrist guards, and… everything she made for…"He trailed off, realizing I had destroyed and erased everything that had anything to do with him. After a long silence, Christopher's voice, sharp with impatience, came
