Chapter 2 Don't Be Ungrateful

Penulis: Fortune Abundant
It had only been several hours, yet my phone was already blowing up with calls and messages from relatives, all demanding I pay back the money.

My cousin's family had been trashing my reputation for a long time. So, everyone would take their word for it. No one would ever bother to listen to little old me. To them, my side of the story didn't matter.

So, I blocked them all.

The very next day, Jasmine and my aunt showed up at my workplace, dragging a group of relatives with them. They barged in like they were out for blood.

As soon as Jasmine spotted me, she dropped to her knees, her eyes red and swollen from crying. "Please, Kaelyn, I'm begging you! Just return the money for Grandma's surgery. You can buy a car any time, but she won't even make it to the end of the month if she doesn't receive the surgery!"

A crowd of coworkers gathered, curious about the scene.

Of course, my relatives wasted no time twisting the story, exaggerating like they had so many times before.

Colleagues who had been friendly with me now shot me looks of suspicion and disgust, their opinions shifting in an instant.

"Who would've thought a quiet girl like her could stoop so low? Stealing her own grandmother's surgery money!"

"Stealing to buy a car, too! What kind of person does that?"

"If I had a daughter like her, I'd beat her within an inch of her life."

"My diamond ring's been missing for a while. I bet she swiped that, too!"

Their whispers seeped into my ears like the murmurs of devils, pinning me to a pillar of shame.

I fought to keep my voice steady as I retorted, "Just because you say I stole the money, that makes it true? Where's your proof?"

Jasmine sniffled dramatically. "Why would we come all the way here without proof? The security cameras at home caught you taking Grandma's surgery money. We didn't want to show the footage publicly. We're trying to save you some face."

What a load of nonsense. The thief in the video was her. That was how the family found out she was the one who stole it!

I fixed her with a cold stare. "I don't care about saving face. Go ahead, show me the footage if you have it."

"I can't do that," she muttered.

"Can't? Or don't even have it?"

Jasmine's face flushed as if with frustration. She raised her voice, eyes red, "You were naked when you stole the money! If I release that video, how will you face your co-workers? I'm only holding back because I don't want to hurt you like that!"

My aunt spat at my feet. "You shameless little thief! Pay up, or we'll release that video for everyone to see!"

"Mom, please don't," Jasmine begged, looking pitiful as she turned toward me. "She's still my cousin after all." Then, with a pleading expression, she added, "Kaelyn, I'm begging you, just return the money. It was never yours to begin with."

"Yeah, Kaelyn, just pay it back already!"

"You're in the wrong here."

A chorus of voices chimed in, pressuring me from all sides.

I couldn't outmatch Jasmine's crocodile tears and twisted words. So, I pulled out my phone, ready to call the police.

She noticed my actions and jumped to her feet the second she sensed trouble. She reached for my phone as panic flashed in her eyes. "Don't call them! You'll end up in jail!"

I dodged her easily. Before I could dial, a hand shot out from behind me and snatched my phone.

I spun around to see Joziah, panting as if he had run a marathon. My blood boiled. I could have strangled him right then.

"Give me my phone back!" I snapped, my patience gone.

"Jasmine's right. Calling the police isn't an option," Joziah said, holding my phone out of reach. "Kaelyn, this can't be swept under the rug anymore. You've stolen a lot of money, and I can't just stand by and watch you throw your life away by ending up in jail. I'll cover the 300 thousand. You don't have to worry."

My anger flared, and I slapped him hard across the face. "Who asked for your help? Give me my phone!"

He ignored me, turning instead to Jasmine. "Give me your bank account number. I'll transfer the money now."

"Okay! Oh, Joziah, thank you so much. I'd feel so guilty if she really called the police and got herself thrown in jail."

They were already getting ready to finalize the transfer.

I clenched my teeth, desperate to stop them. Alas, my relatives and co-workers held me back.

"Kaelyn, don't be ungrateful."

"Yeah, you should count yourself lucky for having a boyfriend like Mr. Roach, who's willing to bail you out. You owe him big time."

"At least your cousin's family didn't press charges. You should be thankful for that."

It had always been this way. Jasmine would fling dirt on my name and then play the gracious victim. Meanwhile, Joziah would swoop in, taking the blame on my behalf before paying off the damages like a saint. He would then be praised by everyone around him.

As for me? I was forever the one accused, the one berated and despised.

I watched their mouths open and close, spewing venomous words at me. Yet, all I could feel was this sinking dread, like I was caught in quicksand. The harder I fought, the deeper I sank. It wouldn't take long for the ground to swallow me whole, stifling my breath and choking the air from my lungs.

Suddenly, two police officers shoved their way into the crowd, cutting through the commotion.

The younger, taller one stepped forward and asked, "Who called the cops?"

This is the first time I've ever witnessed Joziah looking so utterly defeated in my two lifetimes. However, I didn't feel the least bit sorry for him. In fact, I felt deeply satisfied with how things had turned out."I've only betrayed you once, and you're already crumbling? What about all those years when you forced me to apologize to the real culprits? What about the times you've compensated them and made me thank you for it? Did you ever stop to think about how humiliated and disgusted I felt?" His face twisted with guilt. "Jasmine deceived me. She tricked me into thinking you were the one at fault."I scoffed. "No, Joziah. The problem lies in your lack of trust in me. You've never trusted me even once. You've never bothered to consider how I felt. Stop making me sick. If you keep this up, I won't hesitate to add more fuel to your bonfire there."Then, I didn't hesitate to turn on my heel and walk away with Lucas by my side.Lucas, who was in an unusually good mood, hummed al

I froze at his words and instinctively avoided his gaze.Lucas spun halfway around, leaning back toward me. "What are you running from?"I reluctantly met his gaze with a surge of embarrassment. "Your confession. It's just, well, a bit sudden."No sooner had I said that than his frustration flared. "We've been classmates for seven years! Anyone can see I've liked you for ages! If I'd known you were this clueless, I would've confessed a long time ago. That way, Joziah, that jerk, wouldn't have swooped in and stolen you first. He treated you like dirt! I swear I would do anything just to get my hands on him!"I wasn't sure about how to approach his feelings. "Lucas, I'm not planning on dating anyone right now."He seemed to ignore my uneasiness as though it didn't matter. "What are you so afraid of? If I make you uncomfortable, you can always walk away. However, we can take it slow if you don't mind being around me. Let's stay as friends and see where it goes. Your comfort comes f

My aunt despised me so deeply that she wanted to give me a beating the second she saw me.I calmly pointed my phone at her and said, "Go ahead, hit me if you dare. However, I won't hesitate to ring the police."Henry, who had been standing quietly in the background, quickly dragged her away from me.He released a long sigh and said, "Kae, no one wanted things to get this bad. It's my fault for being too busy to notice how your aunt and Jasmine were treating you. I've already dealt with them. They won't dare to pick on you anymore."I looked at him with cold detachment. "Good cop and bad cop, huh? You two really do work together perfectly. If I hadn't overheard you saying I was a bitch who bullied your daughter and that I should have died with my parents, I might still believe you were a decent person."He had spent so long pretending to be a gentleman that he didn't know what to say after I exposed his act. Instead, he could only stay silent and continue to stand there uncomfortab

  • Reborn, No More Taking the Fall   Chapter 5 Why Are You So Vicious?

Joziah's face was dark with anger. "Kaelyn, you've been bullying Jasmine for over twenty years. Now, you're pushing her to the brink just because she wronged you once? Do you even know that she'll be behind bars this time and that her entire life will be ruined!?"I set my fork down calmly. "That's exactly what I'm aiming for."She made me live in her shadow for half my life and also caused me to die tragically in my previous life.No amount of revenge I took could be too much!Unfortunately, Joziah clearly didn't see it that way. "How can you be so vicious?"Before I could respond, Lucas slammed his fork onto the table with a loud snap. "And how can you be so stupid?"He said sarcastically as he looked Joziah up and down, "Every day, you walk around with those useless pairs of eyes. It's a shame that they seem to function well enough when you can't even use it properly. You've got a head sitting on your neck, but it's just there for height. It might as well be utterly useless."

  • Reborn, No More Taking the Fall   Chapter 4 Steal Money to Buy a Car

I froze in disbelief upon hearing those words.I never thought that Jasmine had really stolen the money to buy a car. To make matters worse, she had even registered it in my name!Joziah stood up and said with an air of confidence, "I knew it."Jasmine's eyes gleamed with a subtle hint of triumph. "So, are you ready to pay up now?"The police officer spoke up, saying the evidence was still incomplete and that further investigation was needed. Joziah and his relatives were further convinced I had stolen the money. If it weren't for the officer scolding them, they would have even wanted to snatch my phone and transfer the money themselves. I was never good with words. Nonetheless, I wasn't a troublemaker like them. All I could do was call my lawyer and snap into the phone as my frustration grew, "Where are you?"The lazy fool was always late to class during school. How could he even afford to be late when handling a client's case?"I'm here! Sorry about the delay, everyone." A

"It's me!"I shouted the words loud and clear, my heart racing. Just yesterday, I told my two closest colleagues to call the police if any strangers came looking for trouble at the office."Kaelyn, are you sure you want to do this? Calling the cops is just asking for trouble," Jasmine stammered, her facade cracking for a moment before she switched to a pleading tone.Joziah was nearly frantic. "Stealing 300 thousand isn't just some childish game, Kaelyn. You can't talk your way out of this. Hurry and tell the officers it's all a misunderstanding, and—""Get lost!"I shoved past the people blocking my way and strode straight to the police, ready to lay everything out."I called the police. My cousin Jasmine stole 300 thousand meant for my grandmother's surgery and framed me for it. She's been pressuring me to pay her back and causing a scene at my workplace!"Joziah grabbed my arm. "Kaelyn, stop being so stubborn. Why do you always pin your mistakes on Jasmine?"I shook him off,
