Lucy Hale

What's going on?

I thought this was supposed to happen two days ago.

Uneasiness creeped its way across my skin, pricking me in every way possible.

I could sense it. The moment our eyes met, my entire body went numb, recognizing every bit of his hideous soul.

A face I once woke up to every morning.

A face I last saw staring down at me mercilessly  as I fell off a cliff to my death.

My lungs refused to work for a second and even so, I forced myself to breathe.

I forced my hands to unclench, undigging my nails from my palm.

I tore my gaze away from him, desperate to reclaim even a shred of control.

My voice scraped out of my throat. “Mia, could you–” I cleared my throat, “I mean, handle the gentlemen? I still need to sort the new stock.”

It was a weak excuse, but Mia didn’t notice. Or she pretended to, I wildly guessed.

She nodded, eyeing me oddly before she turned to greet both of the men.

The other guy smiled politely at her, adjusting the sleeves of his dark blazer, while Adrian’s gaze lingered on me with unreadable intensity.

I couldn’t bear it.

I quickly slipped behind the small counter and professed to inspect through the inventory on the tablet, though the screen might as well have been blank.

My heartbeat drowned out everything, the thick, suffocating, pounding in my ears.

Why is he here? What is he doing in the store today of all days?

I avoided the original meeting date. I changed the event. I changed the timing. Why does fate keep dragging him to me?

My fingers trembled as I pretended to scroll. Every movement felt brittle, fragile.

All I wanted was to stay invisible and for him to leave.

But fate, ever so cruel, had other plans.

Footsteps approached, painfully slow, quiet and deliberate halted in front of the counter.

I reflectively stiffened.

Then his voice came, low and smooth, the same voice that once made me trust him. A voice I now feared more than anything.

“Excuse me.”

My breath caught. My head lifted automatically, even though every instinct screamed not to.

Adrian stood in front of me.

Up close, he was exactly as I remembered, sharp features softened by controlled expression, dark eyes that always seemed to hold something back.

He wore a tailored suit jacket over a crisp shirt, casual but effortlessly expensive. In this life, he shouldn’t recognize me.

He shouldn’t know me.

But still, his gaze held a strange familiarity, as if he was studying me a little too much.

“Could you help me with a measurement?”

My stomach twisted violently.

Of all requests.

I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice even. “Oh, um—I think Mia is free—”

As if summoned by fate’s cruelty again, I glanced over and saw Mia completely absorbed with the other man, holding up fabrics, laughing lightly. There was no way she’d hear me now.

My escape route disappeared instantly.

I felt my throat tighten. “I– I can call someone.”

But the boutique was small. There was no one else.

Adrian tilted his head slightly. “If it’s not too much trouble.”

My fingers distressedly dug into into my palm, almost tearing my skin. My vision blurred for a moment, panic swelling, growing, threatening to break me open.

My breath came shallow as my back felt uncomfortably icy, forming a cold sweat.

The memory of the cliff flashed behind my eyes, the wind, the betrayal, his expression as he pushed me.

My chest tightened intensely, I almost gagged.

Go away, if you have a tiny bit of remorse, just leave me alone.

“Are you alright?” Adrian asked, his voice softer. Concerned. As if he wasn’t the man who betrayed me. As if he wasn’t the reason I died.

No. No.

I couldn’t break down in front of him. Not here. Not when he had no idea who I truly was.

I forced myself to inhale and somehow shaped the trembling air into words. “I—I’m fine. Just… I have to cater to something. Please wait a moment.”

Before he could respond, I stepped back and practically fled toward Mia.

She turned, startled by how fast I approached. “Lucy? What? Oh my god, you’re pale! Are you okay?”

I grabbed her arm, shaking my head quickly. “Mia, please. Can you handle Adr– the other customer? I can take this gentleman instead. I just… I don’t feel well, I can’t—” I whispered desperately.

I didn’t know what I was saying anymore. Everything felt too loud, too bright, too choking.

I couldn’t face Adrian, not when every cell in my body remembered every nook and hook of my past life.

As though it had happened only yesterday.

Mia took one look at my face and didn’t question it. “Okay! Okay, no problem. I’ll switch. Just sit down for a second, Lucy.”

Relief washed over me, I almost buckled right there and then.

I'm indebted to you, Mia.

I nodded shakily and stepped back, trying to breathe through the nausea clawing through me.

But before I could steady myself, someone touched my shoulder, gentle yet hesitant.

I flinched violently.

“Hey,” the man who had come in with Adrian greeted softly. He wasn’t Adrian’s assistant, I remembered that much.

He was someone I had seen only once at a Hawthorne family event in my past life. It felt I supposedly should've known him.

I couldn’t recall his name, but something about his persona screamed of kindness, that one I could assure.

His eyes were genuine, as he looked at me with quiet concern.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice low and steady, nothing like the suffocating dread coming from Adrian’s presence. “You look like you’re about to faint.”

I swallowed hard, unable to form words as the world wobbled slightly around me.

Trying desperately not to collapse as this familiar stranger waits for my answer.

Lucy Hale“We’re here,” Elias stated quietly. He smoothly parked the car in front of the Hawthorne estate, turning off the engine.I bit my lips anxiously, feeling it a bit chapped. The Hawthorne estate rose before us exactly as it did in my memories.Vast, elegant, and mercilessly unchanged. My fingers tightened around the door handle, feeling it too heavy to push open. The wrought iron gates, the pale stone walls, the carefully trimmed hedges framing the path into silent witnesses. The moment both of my feet touched the ground, my eyes shut tightly before fluttering it open again.I hadn’t planned to return here.“Oh my god, it’s intimidating.” Mia let out a breath on the other side of the door. Her eyes widened in awe as the mansion stole her gaze.I couldn’t answer. The air felt too thick in my lungs. I hate the way the estate loomed over me, mocking me in every way.I despise feeling weak like this.Elias quietly stepped out of the car and walked to the trunk, lifting it open

Lucy HaleElias didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to.He simply stood there, tall and still. His gaze fixed on the driver with a calm intensity that felt heavier than rage ever could.“Explain,” Elias uttered, demanding in his tone.Just a word. The driver swallowed.Up close, I could see the tension crawl up his neck, his earlier arrogance evaporating into mist under the sunlight. His shoulders stiffened, his hands clenched and unclenched by his sides.“There was a misunderstanding,” he pressed, his tone suddenly respectful. My lips curled in disgust. It’s unbelievable, he was very much disrespectful to us earlier. It seemed he did know his place.“The road was crowded. The brake is—”Elias tilted his head slightly.“The road was clear,” he replied evenly. “And the damage suggests you failed to maintain a safe distance.”Silence.I watched the realization dawn in the driver’s eyes. Then, my gaze shifted towards Elias. It was admiring and refreshing to see how composed someon

  • Reborn: Not Your Wife Anymore!   Chapter 10 - Unresolved Anger

Lucy HaleFor a few seconds after the impact, neither of us moved. The engine idled softly, almost mockingly calm compared to the chaos pounding inside my chest. My ears rang, my hands trembled, and the smell of hot metal seeped faintly into the air.I scrunched my nose instinctively.“Did we just get hit?” Mia breathed finally, her voice thin with disbelief.I nodded, though my mind was already racing ahead. To the consequences, explanations, and the inevitable conversation I will have with Mrs Clair. The company car.Her trust. Her quiet expectation that we would arrive without incident or any issues.I bit my lips, wheels of thoughts already running in my mind. How was I supposed to explain this?“It might not be too bad,” I queried automatically, forcing myself to sound steady. “Maybe just a scratch.”I didn’t believe it.We unbuckled in silence and stepped out of the car. The air felt heavier here, the road empty from any vehicle except for the tall trees on the side. Their s

  • Reborn: Not Your Wife Anymore!   Chapter 9 - Accidental?

Lucy HaleThe engine hummed softly beneath us as the car slid onto the main road, its polished surface reflecting the morning light. Mrs Clair had insisted we use the company car.She thought it was only proper, given the importance of the event. I sat in the passenger seat, seatbelt neatly hugging my front, posture composed.Though inside, I was anything but.I sighed, nerves started to build on my spine.Mia gripped the steering wheel tighter, her shoulders stiff. “I can’t believe this,” she muttered, eyes fixed firmly ahead. “An actual Hawthorne family event. I feel like I’m going to mess something up, Lucy.”“You won’t,” I chirped, patting her shoulder gently though my own voice felt far away. “You’re doing great.”She laughed nervously. “You say that now. Wait until we arrive.”I didn’t answer, only huffed a laugh.Because I know I couldn't hide my nervousness as well. The suits hung carefully in the backseat, protected by garment bags, swaying gently with every turn. One b

Lucy Hale“So it’s really them.” Mia whispered, not even trying to hide her curiosity. “It seems they really are big figures.”“Yeah.” I let out a small smile. It was as figured, it was him.“This works,” Adrian muttered, checking himself on the mirror. “Better than expected.”The man whom now I deemed as Adrian’s friend adjusted the cuff thoughtfully. His fingers brushing the fabric as if committing the texture to memory. A genuine smile tugged on his lips. “It’s perfect. You were right about the fabric. It holds its shape beautifully.”Luckily, both of them were already satisfied with the first suit. That alone should have been a relief. And yet my shoulders only loosened slightly as Adrian nodded at the finished fitting. His calm and unreadable expression settled an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. Mia let out a quiet breath beside me, pride flickering across her face.I inclined my head, keeping my tone professional. “I’m glad it meets your expectations.”“That’s why we

  • Reborn: Not Your Wife Anymore!   Chapter 7 - Bravery

Lucy HaleThe boutique closed an hour later than usual that evening.By the time Mia pulled down the metal shutters, the sky outside had darkened into a deep blue. It was a thoughtful blue, the kind that made the city feel hushed and intimate. Most of the people had either finished their work or had already gone home. The silence outside the shop felt heavier than normal, thick with questions neither of us had asked yet.Mia broke it first.“So,” she started, “who do you think this important guest is?” She leaned against the shutter and inserted her hand in her pocket jacket, the night wind might have been too cold for her.I pretended to rummage through my bag, buying myself a few seconds. My fingers brushed over an unused heatpad, gripping it before handing it to Mia. “I don’t know,” I muttered, carefully neutral. My chest tightened from the dishonesty.Mia shot me a look. “Liar.” Though she still reached out for the heatpad and began to stride towards her home direction.I sm
