Aurora woke to the blinding white of the hospital ceiling. The world around her was muffled, as though she were underwater. Her chest felt heavy, her throat raw, but the first thought that cut through the fog was of Elara.

Her baby.

She turned her head sharply, searching for the small figure that should have been curled beside her bed. Panic clawed at her chest when she saw only Cole, seated in the chair beside her, his face drawn and pale. His hand rested on hers, steady, almost too steady, as though he were holding himself together for her sake.

“Cole,” she rasped, her voice hoarse. “Where’s Elara? Where’s my baby?”

Cole’s expression flickered, pain flashing across his features. He swallowed hard, his voice low and careful. “Aurora…”

“No.” She sat up quickly, her breath coming in shallow bursts. The IV tugged at her arm, but she ignored it, gripping his sleeve with desperate fingers. “Don’t look at me like that. Where is she? Tell me she’s fine.”

Cole reached for her trembling hands, trying to still her. “Aurora… Elara is gone.”

The words struck like a thunderclap, but Aurora shook her head violently. “No! No, that’s not true. Don’t you dare say that.” Her eyes brimmed with tears, wide and wild with denial. “The doctor was fixing her. He said he’d fix her! And you—” her voice cracked, trembling with betrayal—“you promised me, Cole. You promised you’d help her. You said you’d find a cure!”

Cole’s chest constricted. He had faced outbreaks, plagues, human suffering in every form….but never this. Never the sight of Aurora, broken and unraveling as she clung to a hope that had already slipped through her fingers.

“I was going to,” he whispered, his voice thick with grief. “God knows I was going to.”

But Aurora wasn’t listening. She tore the IV out of her arm, the sting of the needle lost beneath her hysteria. Blood dotted her skin, but she barely noticed as she stumbled out of bed.

“Aurora, wait—!” Cole shot up, reaching for her, but she was already rushing for the door.

Her bare feet slapped against the sterile floor as she stormed down the corridor, her hospital gown trailing behind her. Nurses called after her, startled, but she didn’t stop until she burst into the emergency ward.

And then her world froze.

There, under the harsh fluorescent light, two nurses were gently wiping down a small, still body. Elara’s skin was pale, her lips tinged with blue. They were preparing her for the morgue.

“No!” Aurora’s scream tore through the ward like shattered glass. She shoved the nurses aside with a strength born of madness and collapsed over her daughter’s body.

“My baby!” she wailed, clutching Elara to her chest. “Don’t touch her! She’s just sleeping. Do you hear me? She’s fine, she’s just sleeping.

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she rocked the little girl back and forth, pressing frantic kisses to her cold forehead. “Wake up, sweetheart. Mommy’s here. You’re okay now. What do you want to eat, hmm? Chicken soup? Pancakes? I’ll make anything you want when we get home.”

But the silence was merciless.

The nurses stood frozen, their eyes glassy with sorrow. Cole stood in the doorway, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were white, his heart breaking as he watched the woman he once admired crumble in grief.

Dr. Henry approached cautiously, his tone gentle but firm. “Aurora…”

She glared up at him, her face streaked with tears, her arms clutching Elara like a shield. “Don’t you say it. Don’t you dare say she’s gone!”

The doctor’s voice softened further, his eyes heavy with compassion. “If we don’t transfer her now, decomposition will—”

“Shut up!” Aurora screamed, rocking her daughter harder, her words tumbling in broken sobs. “She’s not dead. She’s not! She just needs rest. She just needs me. I won’t let you take her. I won’t let anyone take her from me!”

Her voice cracked into a whisper as she buried her face in Elara’s hair. “I promised I’d protect you, baby. Mommy’s here. Nothing will happen to you. Nothing.”

Cole couldn’t breathe. The sight of Aurora clinging to Elara’s lifeless body, refusing to let go, tore at him in ways he couldn’t have imagined. His own tears burned hot as he turned away, his shoulders shaking.

Finally, Dr. Henry nodded at the nurses. His voice was thick with regret. “Sedate her. It’s the only way.”

A nurse stepped forward with the syringe, her hands trembling. Aurora struggled violently, her screams echoing down the corridor, until the sedative took hold and her body slackened, her head lolling against Elara’s chest.

Even unconscious, her arms were still curled protectively around her daughter until the nurses gently pried them apart.

The emergency ward doors opened, and the sound spilled into the hallway. Curious patients and visitors had gathered, whispers rippling through the crowd. Among them stood Xavier, Lilith, and Jaxon.

Jaxon clung to Xavier’s arm, he had an episode earlier and was brought to the hospital, his little face that looked slightly like Elara’s was pale. Xavier, distracted, frowned as he glanced at the commotion.

“What’s happening?” He asked a nearby nurse.

The nurse’s expression darkened with sorrow.”A woman just lost her child.”

For a fleeting second, Aurora and Elara’s faces flickered across Xavier’s mind. But he shook the thought away, dismissing it as absurd. It couldn’t be them. Not his family. Not like this.

If only he knew.

As Xavier turned back to Lilith and guided Jaxon down the hall, the ward doors opened again. Two stretchers rolled out, one carrying Aurora’s limp body, her face streaked with dried tears, and the other carrying Elara, small and still, shrouded in white.

One bound for the recovery ward.

The other for the morgue.

And Xavier walked away, unaware of how close he had come to the truth.

Aurora turned around slowly, the movement deliberate, controlled, even though her heart had already begun to hammer against her ribs. The air between them shifted, thickening with something sharp and electric, the kind of tension that warned of damage long before the blow ever landed. Her eyes locked onto Lilith’s face, onto that familiar smile that never quite reached her eyes, and she heard her own voice come out steadier than she felt.“What did you just say?”Lilith didn’t hesitate. She didn’t falter. If anything, the question seemed to amuse her. The smirk curved her lips upward with practiced ease, her posture relaxed, almost indulgent, as though this confrontation was nothing more than a pleasant diversion in an otherwise tedious day. She tilted her head slightly, studying Aurora the way one might study a reflection that annoyed them simply by existing.“You heard me well,” Lilith said smoothly. “Billy. I believe you have met him before.”The name landed like a weight in Aur

Xavier stared at the documents in Professor Adrian Holloway’s hands as though they might rearrange themselves into something less damning if he looked hard enough. His jaw tightened, a slow tension building in his shoulders as he exhaled through his nose and shook his head once, deliberately, as if physically rejecting what he was being told.“What do you mean?” he asked, his voice controlled but strained beneath the restraint. “That’s not possible. You have to be mistaken.”Professor Holloway did not look up at him immediately. His attention remained fixed on the papers, his fingers flipping through the pages again, slower this time, more deliberate, as though he were confirming something he already knew to be true. When he finally spoke, his tone was firm, stripped of hesitation.“I’m not mistaken, sir,” Holloway said quietly. “Not at all.”Xavier took a step closer, his frustration sharpening. “You’re telling me —” He stopped himself, jaw flexing, then spoke again, “—you’re tellin

Xavier sat alone in his office long after the meeting had ended, the skyline beyond the glass walls dimming as the afternoon slipped toward evening. He hadn’t moved from the chair behind his desk, not when the last executive excused himself, not when Ms. Collins quietly peeked in to ask if he needed anything. He waved her away without looking up. His attention was fixed on his phone, resting face down against the polished wood, as though it might vibrate again if he stared at it long enough. It did.The ping was sharp in the quiet room, the sound amplified by his nerves. A message notification flashed across the screen from the number he had just called minutes earlier. Xavier reached for the phone, his fingers already tightening around it, when it rang instead. He frowned slightly and answered without greeting.“Talk to me,” he said. The voice on the other end hesitated, then sighed. “Xav, I’ve got the footage. Clean angles. Multiple cameras. But there’s no audio.”Xavier leaned back

Xavier’s voice came from behind her.“Who was that?”Lilith froze. Not visibly. Not dramatically. But something inside her seized hard enough that for half a second, her lungs forgot what they were supposed to do.She did not turn immediately. She inhaled first, slow and measured, then turned around with what she hoped passed for surprise rather than panic.“Xavier?” she said. “What are you doing here?”He stood a few steps away, jacket still on, phone in his hand like he had just lowered it mid-call. His expression wasn’t angry. That would’ve been easier. Anger was loud, obvious. This was something quieter. Watchful. Careful. The kind of look a man wore when he was putting pieces together and didn’t yet like the picture forming.“That’s not what I asked,” he said evenly. “Who was the man you were talking to?”Her heart thudded once. Hard.Lilith blinked, brows knitting together as if she were genuinely trying to remember.“I… don’t know,” she said. “He asked me something. I think he th

“You’re late,” he said sharply, glaring at her.Lilith didn’t flinch. She stopped beside the table, set her bag down slowly, and exhaled as if she had just come from a long, exhausting day…which, technically, she had. Her shoulders rolled back, her chin lifted, and then she looked at him.“Yeah,” she said evenly. “I know. I’m sorry. I needed to get a solid alibi in place before I left.”Billy leaned back in his chair, eyes narrowing. His fingers drummed once, twice, against the polished table.“An alibi,” he repeated flatly. “Is that what we’re calling it now?”Lilith pulled out the chair across from him but didn’t sit yet.“You’ve been ignoring my calls,” he continued. “I’ve been calling you for days.”She finally met his eyes. “Yes. Because I’ve been trying to meet the deadline you gave me.”Billy let out a humorless laugh. “All I’m hearing are excuses.”Lilith’s jaw tightened.“Take a damn seat.”He snapped. She did.The chair scraped softly against the floor as she lowered herself

Lilith washed her hands for the third time after finally finishing the batch of drugs. She had been spending nights at the lab, sleeping on chairs, surviving on caffeine and adrenaline, and today was no exception. The fluorescent lights hummed softly above her as water ran over her fingers, carrying away the last traces of chemicals she no longer even noticed the smell of. Fatigue tugged at her body, but fear didn’t touch her.Not anymore. She had beaten the timeline Billy had given her.His messages had been coming in steadily throughout the night, one after the other, growing more impatient as the hours passed. She had ignored every single one. There was no need to rush now. The work was done.Lilith turned off the tap and moved through the lab with quiet precision. She wiped down every surface, cleaned every instrument, and disposed of every material properly. Counters were scrubbed until they looked untouched. Trash was sealed and removed. Files were locked away. By the time she w
