Athena De Vera, a twenty-two-year-old cheerful and simple young woman, has always believed that the right person will come at the right time. But she never expected that the man who would make her heart race would be the one she should never fall in love with—Leonardo Del Castillo, the handsome, successful, and respected father of her best friend. At first, Athena saw Leonardo as nothing more than a kind and responsible father. However, the more often she visited her best friend's house, the more she got to know the man. Little by little, she discovered his kindness, compassion, and genuine personality hidden beneath the cold and serious image he showed to everyone else. With every conversation and every moment they spent together, an unexpected feeling began to grow between them. It was a love they desperately tried to resist because they knew the truth would hurt many people. Yet no matter how hard they tried to suppress their feelings, they only fell deeper in love with each other. Fearing the judgment of others and the possibility of ruining their relationships, they chose to keep their romance a secret. To everyone else, Athena was simply the best friend of Adrian's daughter. But behind closed doors and during their secret meetings, a love that grew stronger with each passing day quietly blossomed. But no secret can remain hidden forever. What if her best friend discovers their relationship? What if their families refuse to accept it? And what if the day comes when they must choose between the love they share and the people who matter most in their lives? How far are they willing to fight for a love that fate seemed to deny, yet one their hearts freely chose?

Chapter 1

I was sitting in the car on my way to school. I was already a third-year college student at one of Manila's well-known universities. As soon as we stopped in front of the gate, I spoke to the driver. "Kuya, you can drop me off here. There's no need to drive me inside," I said as I adjusted my bag. He nodded. "Yes, Ma'am."

"And Kuya, you don't have to pick me up later either, okay?" I added. "Understood, Ma'am." I smiled before getting out of the car. As soon as I stepped onto the campus, I couldn't help but smile again. It was the first day of classes, and it already felt like it was going to be another wonderful day.

As I walked, I searched the classroom for my first subject. The moment I entered, I immediately spotted Amarah already seated inside. She waved at me and pointed to the empty seat beside her. I smiled back, walked over, and sat beside her. "You're here early," I said.

"Yeah. You know Daddy—he always wants to be early," she replied with a playful eye roll, making me laugh. “You know, girl, your dad is really handsome. But why hasn’t he remarried since your mom left him?” I asked curiously. Amarah simply shrugged. “I don’t know. Besides, I don’t want him to.”

“Why not?” I asked. “I don’t know. I guess I’m happy with it being just the two of us. I’m afraid that if Dad gets married again, everything will change.” I nodded quietly. She had a point. Still, deep down, I couldn’t help thinking that it would be such a waste for someone as handsome as her father to remain single for the rest of his life. “And, girl, your dad is so strict,” I teased.

“He’s not that strict. He’s actually very kind,” Amarah defended. I laughed and leaned closer to her. “So… would you let me be your mommy, Amarah?” I asked jokingly. Her eyes widened in disbelief. “Are you crazy? Flirt with every guy on campus if you want, but stay away from my dad! Besides, we’re the same age!” she said, launching into a long lecture.

I burst into laughter. “I’m just kidding. Besides, he’s practically like a father to me,” I replied with a chuckle. But honestly, Amarah’s father didn’t look like a man in his forties at all. He was incredibly handsome, with a tall, well-built physique that made him appear much younger than his age. It was no surprise that so many women admired him.

“Seriously, your dad is so strict,” I teased again. Amarah immediately shook her head. “He’s really not. Dad is actually very kind,” she insisted. Grinning, I leaned closer once more. “So… would you really let me be your mommy?” I joked. Her eyes grew wide before she lightly smacked my arm.

“Are you out of your mind? Go flirt with every guy in this school if you want, just not my dad! And besides, we’re the same age!” I laughed even harder. “Relax, I was only kidding. Besides, he’s like a father to me too,” I replied, trying to hold back my laughter.

She rolled her eyes at me before shaking her head and turning her attention to the front of the classroom. But as the smile slowly faded from my lips, I couldn't help but fall into deep thought. Honestly, Amarah's father didn't look like a man in his forties at all. He was tall, well-dressed, and clearly took good care of himself.

On top of that, he had a strong, well-built physique that was rare for men his age. It wasn't surprising that so many women admired him. But to me, he was simply my best friend's father... or at least, that was what I kept telling myself. After our classes ended, we headed straight to Amarah's house with their driver. It was just the two of us today since Joan wasn't with us.

As soon as we arrived, we went directly to Amarah's room. We spent the next few hours chatting while working on some of our school requirements. After a while, their nanny knocked on the door. "Miss Amarah, your father is waiting for you in the dining room. Dinner is ready," she said politely.

"We're coming, Yaya," Amarah replied. As soon as the nanny left, Amarah turned to me. "Come on. Daddy's probably waiting for us." I nodded and followed her out of the room. As we walked downstairs, I couldn't help but feel a little nervous. I didn't know why, but every time I was around Amarah's father, I felt like I had to be extra careful with my actions and the way I spoke.

When we entered the dining room, I immediately saw the man seated at the far end of the table. As always, he was impeccably dressed, and his face wore the same calm, serious expression. The moment he noticed us, his eyes briefly landed on us before he gave a slight nod. "Good evening, Daddy," Amarah greeted cheerfully as she took her seat.

"Good evening, sir," I greeted politely. That evening, I was only wearing casual clothes—a pair of simple shorts and a sleeveless top because of the warm weather. I hadn't expected to join Amarah's father for dinner. Quietly, I sat beside Amarah and arranged my plate.

As we ate, I couldn't help but notice Mr. Del Castillo glanced in my direction several times. At first, I ignored it, assuming it was nothing more than a coincidence. But as the minutes passed, I became more aware of his lingering glances. They weren't rude or inappropriate, yet there was something about the way he looked at me that I couldn't explain. It was as if he wanted to say something but chose to remain silent.

The thought made me slightly uneasy. I lowered my gaze and pretended to focus on my meal. I didn't want to overthink something that might not mean anything at all. Meanwhile, Amarah remained completely unaware, happily talking about everything that had happened on our first day of classes.

Her father responded from time to time, but I noticed that he didn't seem fully focused on the conversation. And whenever our eyes accidentally met, he was always the first to look away. That only left me even more confused. Was there something wrong with the way I looked? Or was I simply overthinking things? In the end, I chose to stay quiet and focus on my food, even though I couldn't shake off the strange feeling lingering in my heart.
