Chapter 2

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
"Benjamin, it looks like I really left a scar on you. I can't believe you actually took up racing because of me."

Shane looked at me with a pitying shake of his head as he clicked his tongue.

"Too bad I never see your name on the leaderboard. Racing isn't a hobby you just pick up. You're getting up there in age, and you've always been a bit clumsy. Stop trying to force it."

I glanced at him indifferently.

Just minutes ago, I had clinched the overall championship trophy while he finished dead last.

I had no idea how he could still stand there looking so full of himself. His scorecard was so embarrassing that I felt secondhand embarrassment just looking at it.

Moreover, the only reason he hadn't seen my name on the roster was that I raced under a pseudonym, Blade.

But I didn't bother correcting him. My wife and daughter were probably waiting for me.

To him, however, my silence was obviously a cop-out.

He sized me up from head to toe, noticing my bare face, just like the old days, and a satisfied smile spread across his lips.

"It's been a rough few years for you, hasn't it, Benjamin? Why did you have to be so stubborn back then? Now, you're all alone."

He held up his hand, flaunting a diamond ring. "You didn't believe me when I said Natalie and I were just friends. Well, look at us now. We're getting engaged."

The ring was a replica of the one Natalie had used to propose to me.

I was at the peak of my career when Natalie fell for me at the track and pursued me relentlessly after that.

I was young, successful, and entirely focused on my career. Having never been in love before, I fell completely under her spell within a few months.

When Natalie proposed, my career was hitting a new high.

She had held out a simple, modest ring, her eyes burning with an intense passion.

My temporary lapse into that romance was what ultimately ended my professional racing career. Hence, looking at that ring now, I felt absolutely nothing.

Natalie misread my silence for heartbreak, and a smug satisfaction twisted her cold features.

She let out a chilly laugh. "You made your bed, Benjamin, now you have to lie in it. I still don't get what the hell you were thinking when you walked out on our marriage.

"The second the papers were signed, you vanished off the face of the earth. Do you have any idea how much Cody cried over you? And I—"

She cut herself off mid-sentence, her eyes darkening as she stared at me.

My hands froze on the zipper of my racing suit.

They were completely flipping the script, and I could barely believe what I was hearing.

I walked out on our marriage?

She was the one who used to pick apart everything I did, constantly holding me up against Shane. Even when I swallowed my pride to apologize, Natalie would just look at me with sheer disappointment.

"Shane would never act like this," she used to say. "He has self-respect and ambition. He doesn't cling to people like a pathetic loser."

In my previous life, her constant mind games would drive me to emotional breakdowns, yet I had desperately held onto the marriage anyway.

Meanwhile, she kept dragging my name through the mud in front of our friends and family.

"How did I end up married to such a lunatic?" she would complain. "Am I supposed to spend the rest of my life tied to a guy like this?"

Her friends all took her side, even staging a group intervention just to pressure me. "Benjamin, just let her go. Don't you see how selfish you're being?"

Even Cody turned on me. "Dad, Mom and Mr. Maddox are genuinely in love. You don't even bring home a paycheck, and Mom treats you well enough. Why can't you just let her be happy for once?"

In this life, I had given them exactly what they wanted, yet they turned around and pinned the blame on me. It was absolutely sickening.

I looked at them, my expression as blank as if I were staring at total strangers.

"You're flattering yourselves," I said. "I've never regretted the divorce for a single second. I'm only here to fulfill my own dream. Besides, I already have a new—"

Cody had slept with that teddy bear every single night since he was a baby, and I never expected him to hand it over to Daphne. The moment Natalie picked him up, she asked anxiously, "Well? How did it go?"Cody kept his head down and stayed silent, which instantly set off Natalie's temper."Your dad always spoiled you rotten! What exactly did you say to him?" she snapped. "Answer me!"Natalie's voice grew louder and louder until she looked ready to hit him.Cody finally broke down, bursting into a loud sob. "Dad doesn't care about me anymore! That evening, Shane had dropped by to comfort him, smiling as he told Cody he was his dad now. But Cody completely lost it, screaming and driving him out of the house. "I eat my vegetables now without being told, and I even wash my own socks. Does Dad know? I promise I'll never make him mad again."Natalie never knew what to say because she had absolutely no clue where I had gone. Now, she knew, but I had already married someone else, and I had Daphne.Natalie refused to accept this."Daphne's your child, but so is Cody," she uttered through gritted teeth. "You've ignored him for all these years. It's about time you stepped up and took care of him."Daphne was curled up in my arms, acting like a spoiled

On the screen, a manic Shane held a megaphone, shouting his accusations at the camera. "Blade rigged the championship! His wife, Lauren Keegan, is one of the main event sponsors! I demand a full investigation into the event!"The Elandorian Championship had wrapped up hours earlier, and his video rode that viral wave to spark an immediate reaction online. The view count cleared a hundred million in no time.Guilt washed over me as I looked at Lauren. "Did I bring trouble to your doorstep?" I asked, my voice tight with anxiety.Lauren glanced at me, an unexpected laugh escaping her lips. "You think I'm upset because you caused me trouble?"My mouth opened, but before a reply could form, Daphne scrambled right into my lap. "Mommy's mad at those people for upsetting you, Daddy.""See?" Lauren huffed, her tone teasing. "Daphne gets me better than you do.""I was going to say the same thing," I countered. "She stole my line."We laughed and joked, unbothered by the online drama.

Lauren placed her hand on my shoulder, looking at me with genuine concern. "Benjamin, are you okay?"Daphne's eyes welled with tears as she looked up at me. "Are you feeling down, Daddy? Let me give you a hug."I shook my head, my anger fading as I pulled myself together. "I'm fine."Natalie, who had just screamed at Shane, turned her attention back to Daphne. She looked completely out of it, her eyes brimming with tears."If we'd had a daughter, she would've been even prettier than her."The second those words left her mouth, both Lauren and I stiffened, our faces dropping.Lauren immediately scooped Daphne into her arms, glaring at Natalie with disgust. "Watch your mouth."Natalie's expression hardened, and she let out a bitter laugh. "If you don't have anything to hide, why are you being so defensive?"She was clearly trying to get under Lauren's skin. That was just how Natalie behaved. Whenever she was unhappy, she became a total nutjob, lashing out at anyone within arm'

Natalie froze in her tracks, a flicker of emotion crossing her eyes. Her hardened expression faltered, giving way to a sudden flash of vulnerability."Don't you know what I want by now?"Though she fought to hold it in, a tear finally escaped the corner of her eye."We've been divorced for five years and three months. I sent you hundreds of texts and called you a thousand times, but you never answered once."I even went to see your dad, but they wouldn't tell me anything and threw me out. I don't get it. How much do you have to hate me to be this cruel?"Even as she dissolved into tears, my expression remained calm."The second you cheated on me, it was over between us. What's the use of crying about it now?"The words had barely left my mouth when Natalie kicked the pillar next to her. "Shane and I never did anything, so stop throwing dirt on my name!"Never did anything?I couldn't believe she had the nerve to say that out loud.Did staying out all night count as nothing? D

She looked gorgeous, her elegant posture and gown turning heads the moment she walked out.Her focus was entirely on me as she handed over the trophy."Congratulations, Blade," she said. "You'll always be the greatest racer in the world to me."My eyes welled with tears as I took the trophy and hoisted it high above my head. The track went wild as thousands of fans chanted my name at the top of their lungs. The next second, Daphne ran out in her little dress and threw her arms around my legs.I picked her up with one arm while balancing the trophy in the other."Daddy, you did it!" Daphne squealed, overjoyed. "Mommy, isn't Daddy the best?"Lauren took her from my arms. "He absolutely is."At those words, the reporters went into a frenzy, rushing t
